Which game company is least deserving of its success?

EA.

EA owes most of its success to the fact that it is a HUGE company and has the resources to buy up any franchise/license it wants (Bond, LOTR, etc) and has the widest distribution channels. They also probably get the sweetest deals with the hardware makers and the distributors, simply because of their size. Oh yeah, it also has a monopoly on the Madden name.

That's why EA can continue to crank out rehashed, uninspired games, year after year, and still be the most profitable company. Doesn't that make you sick?

Considering that the US market's biggest selling point is sports, I'm not that surprised by thier success. I was a big fan of EA back in the 80's, when they published a ton of excellent titles on the C-64. The success that EA has today, is from the money they earned during the 80's computer rush.



If there is one company that I can't understand it's success, it would have to be Id software. They have released more sequels and spinoffs of Doom, than I can possibly fathom. What's really sad, is that the market continues to flourish, when it's barely made any innovations to the genera.

Definitely EA. Honestly, I play and love a lot of their games, but they way they put them out sucks. Westwood and Maxis are excellent devs, but they've been severely held back because of EA. First EA pushes Westwood to get TiSun out, making one of the biggest let downs in years, and now they've basically turned Maxis into a Sims expansion sweat shop. Being complete asses to Dreamcast and Xbox owners isn't cool either, and overall they're very arrogant (see the Ty comercial? How about their E3 song? 'EA EA, oooh yeah, oh we kick ass!' Ugh...). And finally, until recently, almost everything they put out was licenced.

Sega.

Good point there Jester. I forget poor Sega is neglected by most gamers.

My pick is Sony, aside from recent hits, what did Sony do to make the Playstation the big hit it is? Hell what did they do to become a huge electronics company? Most of the products aren't even top of the line despite their high prices. Is this all because of the vcr and walkman radio? May the '80s go down as the decade that screwed the world.

Square. They haven't made anything even halfway decent since Tobal 2 (Which was of course passed up for the crime against humanity known as Ehrgeiz just because it had some lame FF characters) and yet they still continue to have this insane legion of fanboys who believe that everything they put out is the best game ever. It's quite sickening.

Okay, anybody who picks any company other than Acclaim is just wrong. Dead wrong. They have the most horrid library in gaming history, and they've been around for 15 years. That, to me, constitutes a success.

EA is the satan of gaming, true, but they at least have some cool franchises - F-1, FIFA, Tiger Woods (which would be 40x cooler if they took out Tiger, but I digress...), and uh....um...Medal of Honour would be really cool if you could aim properly. And ever knew where to go. But that's at least 4x as many good franchises as Acclaim's developed in its history.
