It does seem that their more 'experimental' games get hammered for no reason. But I don't know if I'd pin that to them being Square. Chrono Trigger and Xenogears are basically all love. Vagrant Story is a divided camp. Saga Frontier is usually all hate, and Legend of Mana usually gets lukewarm responses.
Pity that, since VS and LoM are two of my favorite games. SF isn't, but it is a really cool game, and I really like a lot of the systems they use. SF1 I've played through with multiple characters, SF2 on the other hand, was just horrible. And it was made more painful by how beautiful it was. I was playing it simply to see more of the handdrawn goodness, nothing else.
