Why do people like "exploration" or "maze" games?
I've been gaming for about 20 years, and if there's one aspect of gaming that I've always hated, is when in a game you are stuck in some maze or huge area and you need to explore your way out of it.
Many times I almost had great games ruined for me because they suddenly force you to go through a maze (Revenge of Shinobi, for example).
There seems to be a lot of people who enjoy this element in games, but I wonder why? Stuff like running into dead ends, backtracking, and not being able to progress just because they "missed" a small area that they forgot to explore...do they actually that enjoyable?
For me I'd rather get a root canal than have to play games where I am forced to explore and backtrack endlessly. It's brainless, it's work, and it's even worse when you have to endlessly flip back and forth to a "map" screen just to see where you're going.
It's kind of like in real life when you get lost in a bunch of little streets while driving and you have to keep backtracking to find your way. Maybe some people actually enjoy getting lost like that. Masochists, maybe?
