Metroid Prime Story Questions

Yeah, I know, another Metroid thread. Before the mods lock this, the reason I'm doing this as a separate thread is it completely spoils the end of the game, as well as the entire plot, and I'd rather leave that out of the MP thread, since most people there don't seem to have finished it yet. If that's not good enough, go ahead and delete it ;)

Disclaimer/spoiler space used up, so on to the question.

How did Metroid Prime wind up down there? Based on the logs throughout the game, and the fact that you had to unseal the primary crater site, I was under the impression that the Pirates had not yet managed to breach the seal, and still had no access to the raw Phazon down there. Yet, when you do get down there, there are Metroids, and the Metroid Prime itself. Did I miss something completely obvious? There was some discussion of Metroid Prime rampaging around a bit and assimilating technology etc, but my memory is a bit fuzzy. Does anyone remember where the Pirates sealed it back up?

Apparently, the Phazon mines were built on the outlying (and underlying) areas of the crater, and judging from the appearance, they did not access the pure Phazon concentrations. You do seemingly go pretty deep, and the Metroid quarantine area was both deep in the earth and close to the sealed area, but that still doesn't explain the presence of the Metroids and Prime beneath the seal.

Any ideas?

IIRC there were a couple of logs from the Space Pirates that said that some Metroids escaped captivity and fled. I remember one log that talked about how the Pirates "discovered" Metroid Prime down below the mines, so my guess is that one of the escaped Metroids probably transformed into Metroid Prime, and the Pirates found it while doing other research/exploration.

That still doesn't explain how the Metroids would have got down there, if it was sealed (and again, I never saw anything to indicate that they broke the seal, all indications show that only you managed to do that).

I'm pretty certain that the Pirates must have gone past the seal, otherwise they would not have known of Prime's existence. Because Prime is behind the seal with the other Metroids and because this is recorded in the Space Pirate's log book as part of their discoveries, there's reason to believe that they had broken it and somehow sealed it back because of what they found down there (aka Prime).

But to go off on a completely different tangent...

Perhaps when the Chozo built the temple around the impact site they decided to leave a Metroid behind the seal in hopes that it could contain the Phazon much like it was designed to destroy the X parasite. I can't see a creature like Prime evolving THAT quickly when the other Metroids in the same area didn't do the same, especially in the short amount of time the Space Pirates were there. According to the timeline the Space Pirates split up into two groups after their defeat at Zebes, one stayed in Zebes to rebuild while another went to Tallon V. If Prime took place immediately after OG Metroid then either Prime chowed down on a whole lot of Phazon, or it was present before the Pirates even got there.

Either way the Pirates must have gotten past the seal (or at least were able to observe what was beyond it). The logs give clear evidence that they were able to see creatures that were beyond the seal.

My understanding is that Prime was what crashed into the crater and Phazon was produced as a result.

That's what I'm getting also. And that after that the Chozo based their Metroids around it as they saw the potential abilities of it.

Interesting theory, but at its core Prime is still a Metroid, so it wouldn't make sense for Prime (the form that's in the game) to have crashed into the planet since the Chozo were the ones that created the Metroids. What could've happened is that something else could have crashed and tainted nearby Metroids.

Psh, and people say this game doesn't have a decent story. :p

Where did it say that the Chozo created the Metroids? I may have missed that.

I'm fairly certain that was covered in one of the previous games... I believe Super Metroid... but I can't remember clearly now... I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure of that. I believe at some point it was noted that they were an artificially created life form that was used to harness energy.

It was in Metroid Fusion. They said that the Chozo created the Metroids in order to eliminate the X parasite from the universe. Because Samus destroyed every Metroid on SR388, the X were allowed to flourish again during Fusion on that planet. Sweet irony. Or something. :)
