Metroid Prime Story Questions

Yeah, I know, another Metroid thread. Before the mods lock this, the reason I'm doing this as a separate thread is it completely spoils the end of the game, as well as the entire plot, and I'd rather leave that out of the MP thread, since most people there don't seem to have finished it yet. If that's not good enough, go ahead and delete it ;)

Disclaimer/spoiler space used up, so on to the question.

How did Metroid Prime wind up down there? Based on the logs throughout the game, and the fact that you had to unseal the primary crater site, I was under the impression that the Pirates had not yet managed to breach the seal, and still had no access to the raw Phazon down there. Yet, when you do get down there, there are Metroids, and the Metroid Prime itself. Did I miss something completely obvious? There was some discussion of Metroid Prime rampaging around a bit and assimilating technology etc, but my memory is a bit fuzzy. Does anyone remember where the Pirates sealed it back up?

Apparently, the Phazon mines were built on the outlying (and underlying) areas of the crater, and judging from the appearance, they did not access the pure Phazon concentrations. You do seemingly go pretty deep, and the Metroid quarantine area was both deep in the earth and close to the sealed area, but that still doesn't explain the presence of the Metroids and Prime beneath the seal.

Any ideas?

IIRC there were a couple of logs from the Space Pirates that said that some Metroids escaped captivity and fled. I remember one log that talked about how the Pirates "discovered" Metroid Prime down below the mines, so my guess is that one of the escaped Metroids probably transformed into Metroid Prime, and the Pirates found it while doing other research/exploration.

That still doesn't explain how the Metroids would have got down there, if it was sealed (and again, I never saw anything to indicate that they broke the seal, all indications show that only you managed to do that).

I'm pretty certain that the Pirates must have gone past the seal, otherwise they would not have known of Prime's existence. Because Prime is behind the seal with the other Metroids and because this is recorded in the Space Pirate's log book as part of their discoveries, there's reason to believe that they had broken it and somehow sealed it back because of what they found down there (aka Prime).

But to go off on a completely different tangent...

Perhaps when the Chozo built the temple around the impact site they decided to leave a Metroid behind the seal in hopes that it could contain the Phazon much like it was designed to destroy the X parasite. I can't see a creature like Prime evolving THAT quickly when the other Metroids in the same area didn't do the same, especially in the short amount of time the Space Pirates were there. According to the timeline the Space Pirates split up into two groups after their defeat at Zebes, one stayed in Zebes to rebuild while another went to Tallon V. If Prime took place immediately after OG Metroid then either Prime chowed down on a whole lot of Phazon, or it was present before the Pirates even got there.

Either way the Pirates must have gotten past the seal (or at least were able to observe what was beyond it). The logs give clear evidence that they were able to see creatures that were beyond the seal.

My understanding is that Prime was what crashed into the crater and Phazon was produced as a result.

Interesting theory, but at its core Prime is still a Metroid, so it wouldn't make sense for Prime (the form that's in the game) to have crashed into the planet since the Chozo were the ones that created the Metroids. What could've happened is that something else could have crashed and tainted nearby Metroids.

Psh, and people say this game doesn't have a decent story. :p

I'm fairly certain that was covered in one of the previous games... I believe Super Metroid... but I can't remember clearly now... I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure of that. I believe at some point it was noted that they were an artificially created life form that was used to harness energy.

It was in Metroid Fusion. They said that the Chozo created the Metroids in order to eliminate the X parasite from the universe. Because Samus destroyed every Metroid on SR388, the X were allowed to flourish again during Fusion on that planet. Sweet irony. Or something. :)

That sounds really convoluted, since Fusion invented the X. My guess, then, would be that Retro and whoever did Fusion weren't coordinating stories. If you ignore that tidbit from Fusion, I think my explanation makes more sense if you're looking only at Prime.

IMO it makes sense, well, makes more sense than a lot of other storylines in video games. :) Because the Metroid series is one whole story, you can't really look at just one game, you need to see the whole arc. If you look at the timeline it basically goes:

Metroid 1 - Samus destroys all Metroids on Zebes (X parasites being kept in check due to the Metroids on SR388)
Metroid Prime - Samus destroys all Metroids on Tallon V (same as above)
Metroid 2 - Samus destroys all Metroids on SR388 (X parasites begin to multiply due to this event)
Super Metroid - Samus destroys all of the new Metroids on Zebes (X parasites still thriving on SR388 during this time)
Metroid Fusion - Samus goes back to SR388 and becomes infected with X parasite because of the extinction of the Metroids on the planet.

Where are you getting that Prime was the meteor Burg? I don't remember reading anything that inferred that. I need to check those research logs again more carefully next time I go through that area...

edit, from the creature data: "A highly evolved Phazon-producing life form. The aberration kwon as Metroid Prime is the source of Phazon, making it immensely powerful."

Perhaps it was the meteor ;) Which frankly, is sorta lame :/ "aiee, our planet is being corrupted by a metroid crashing into it"

That also doesn't make any sense if you go with either the Fusion story (the Chozo created the Metroids) or the Metroid 1 story (the pirates were on Zebes, experimenting on Metroids - wtf did this meteoric Prime Metroid come from?)

I think we need someone to post all the relevant snippits from the game here. Any volunteers? :D

Well there's talk in the Chozo messages of how the thing that crashed was alive and trying to eat the planet. That's what makes me assume that Prime is the thing that crashed.

Well, I generally think that trying to coordinate plot details for games that were developed at different times by different people in different countries is going to leave some holes.

My problem with the Fusion detail which said that the Chozo created Metroids is that this doesn't explain how Metroids are found all over the galaxy, and how SR-388 is their home world. Throw in the fact that none of the Chozo scripts in Prime make any reference to Chozo-created Metroids (or X, for that matter), and it seems kinda silly to port Fusion's Metroid theory into Prime. IMO, the X simply have no bearing on the rest of the Metroid series.

Where does it say Metroids are all over the galaxy?

Anyway, I agree with tossing the other games, so let's consider Prime on it's own (even so far as basically ignoring Metroid on its lonesome, just inferring plot from Metroid as it is mentioned in Prime). Given that, was the meteor Metroid Prime? (ie, dig out your logs and post a snippit, since I don't remember it ;))

Well, Metroids have been found on SR-388, Zebes, and Tallon IV. I haven't played enough Fusion to know whether they're also on the space station. Metroids are present on every planet on which a Metroid game has taken place.

Vic - I think your creature data snippet is the strongest evidence that the meteor held Prime, and Prime brought the Phazon. On the other hand, Chozo scripts indicated that the meteor brought the Great Poison, and one of the artifact hints referred to the Great Poison in such a way that it could only mean Phazon.

Those planets are also all in the same solar system ;) Remember the map holo room? They were brought to Zebes and Tallon by Pirates. Fusion makes it clear that the Chozo planted the Metroids on SR388 to seal the X, but even if we ignore that game, they still only existed on one solar system in total (based on what the games present, which obviously isn't much)

Yeah, see, that's what I don't understand. The creature data doesn't seem to vibe with the other notes throughout the game. I think I'm gonna have to go back through on a normal game and read everything carefully to figure out what they were trying to say.

If SR-388 is in the same system as Zebes and Tallon IV, I don't recall seeing it. And even if it is, Metroids are all over the solar system, which is the entire known universe of Metroid.

Actually the Metroid series has great continuity IMO, despite having different games jumping all over the timeline. The transition from Metroid 1 to 2 to Super Metroid was pretty much flawless (heck, they even included the ending to Metroid 2 in SM) and the move to both Prime and Fusion seemed pretty solid.

From what I remember SR-338 was actually the Chozo's homeworld, and IIRC from the planetary hologram in the Research facility in Phendara Drifts Tallon V, SR-388 and Zebes are in the same solar system. I believe that both Zebes and Tallon V were colonized by the Chozo as well. Considering how technologically advanced the Chozo civilization was made out to be in every game it seems certain, especially if they were in the same system.

I do agree that the X shouldn't have any bearing on what happens in Prime, but Fusion (and I believe other games) state very clearly that it was the Chozo who created the Metroids, so having the Metroid Prime from the actual game crash into the planet seems far-fetched. I do believe that whatever crashed is a living organism, but perhaps it overtook a Metroid and became Prime, and then the Chozo sealed it off.

That's one possibility, but where did the Metroid who became Prime come from? The Pirates make it pretty clear they brought Metroids there. Or did they mention that they discovered Prime on Tallon? Again, that points to Prime-as-a-meteor, which is lame :(

They mention both actually. In the logs it says that they brought Metroids over (and lost some in the process), and that they "discovered" Metroid Prime. But you can interpret that in two ways

1. One of the lost Metroids somehow chowed down enough Phazon to transform into Metroid Prime and killed off any of the lost Metroids who were deemed as threats to its survival (re: Metroids who were also evolving into the Prime species).

2. The space pirates actually did discover a new species of Metroid that was there before they even arrived.

Metroid, Metroid 2 and Super Metroid were all developed by the same team. Prime and Fusion were both developed by new teams. That's why I don't think you can hold each one accountable for what the other is saying.

If the X don't exist in Fusion, the theory that the Chozo created Metroids as a response to the X doesn't make much sense in Prime's internal storyline. If that theory is put forth somewhere in Prime or even a previous Metroid, I'd buy it, but I'm not aware that it has.

Another possible explanation is that Phazon is somehow the distilled life energy of Metroids, and specifically of Prime. This could explain how the Quarantine areas of the Mines are infested with Metroids, and how Prime can spawn Metroids using Phazon.

Perhaps the meteor contained Phazon which reacted deep within the Earth with Metroid(s) already existing there. The result was Prime, and the Chozo sealed the Crater before Prime had developed, or before they became aware of it. The other Metroids in the Crater could have been spawned from Prime - hence their constant respawning.

Still, this doesn't explain how the Pirates stumbled across and subdued Prime. Actually, if the Pirates never broke the seal, how did they get access to Prime? I don't see how any explanation remedies that.

Hmm. Maybe they did leave it open to interpretation.

Ok, how about this - does anyone know of any SPECIFIC data entry that mentions the Pirates breaching the seal on the Phazon core? I want to know how Prime got in there, because they DO talk about encountering Prime, and that makes no sense unless it came out (while the seal was still in place) and then went back in, or they created Prime and it somehow wound up in the core. Either way, the seal had to have been breached (maybe Prime breached it, it was powerful enough to do so on its own or something, fled back in there to recuperate from fights with the pirates or whatever).

I believe there are several entries that describe the Pirates' attempts to break the seal, but I don't recall anything about them succeeding. Also, the seal was intact until Samus broke it, leading me to believe it hadn't been breached before.

Even if Prime somehow breached the seal, the Pirates referred to finding Prime and somehow trapping it. I don't understand how the Pirates could have returned Prime to the Crater, and even if they could, wouldn't they have set up a little base down there?

sigh. this makes no sense whatsoever

That's my conclusion. Overall, it makes sense at a glance, but it really falls apart under close scrutiny.

I guess you can get some wiggle room out of the fact that the sources to which we're referring were recorded by different beings at different times, so they might not all be consistent.

nah, the seal breach is just a huge plot hole. plus, the creature data on Prime is pretty blunt. It would seem that yes, a giant evil Metroid crashed into Tallon for no reason at all, was sealed by the Chozo, came out to eat a few space pirates and assimilate their missiles, then went back to wait in a hole in the ground so it could snack on Samus when she showed up

bleh. I think I'll come up with some meteor theory and use that as my explanation. then I can write bad fanfics and cosplay samus and strangle myself with my long blonde hair. I'm ranting now.

here are my thoughts

Prime perhaps was some other creature, a metroid like creature if you will

something happened say to the planet it was on or maybe it can survive in space inside meteorites and when this one crashed into tallon IV it was released

perhaps it was a creature that lived off the phazon, but when it crashed into tallon IV the phazon had adverse effects on the creatures of that planet that it didnt on prime, eventually some how metroids on Tallon IV and Prime came into contact and because of the strong mutating properties of Phazon cause Prime and a Metroid to become one creature

perhaps it wasnt a metroid as we know it today

maybe it combined with a more primitive metroid (almost say like comparing a saber tooth tiger to a tiger of today)

and when that primitive metroid came into contact with prime it created the newer metroids were more accustomed to or something very close to it

and it was this that the Chozo based the metroids they created on

perhaps all the Chozo did was take the creature that was created by prime this newer metroid and sped up its evolutionary process creating the metroids were used to

and perhaps in the long time that prime was down there he began to evolve too

im thinking the metroids were allready a creature in existance that the chozo advanced or altered to make them what they were

perhaps they were something they found and advanced on tallon IV and realised they could use to their advantage on SR-388 and brought the metroids they advanced there to destroy the X

and as seen in metroid II the metroids advanced again

maybe the metroids are a fast evolving species

I'm not sure if I buy the Chozo getting Metroids from that critter, they make it pretty clear that they viewed the impact of the meteor as a very bad thing, and went out of their way to seal it up as quickly as possible, and it subsequently wiped them out.

The Metroid Prime as Not-a-Metroid is a decent theory, since it is so physically different from all currently known Metroid mutations.

Most indications seem to point to Tallon IV being developed well after they'd been active elsewhere in the galaxy, and likely, with Metroids, so I really don't think they developed Metroids from Prime, and I'm still not even convinced there were any Metroids on the planet before the Pirates brought them. This all makes decent sense if you accept Metroid Prime as a non-metroid being that crashed into the planet, but it STILL doesn't cover the breach of the sealed crater.

well ok 2 things

1. even if they got metroids form the guy its still a bad thing the impact cause it destroyed the planet so while one good thing may have come from it it still destroyed the planet

2. look at its name Metroid Prime

Prime means comeing before or to do before like when you prime say a snow blower before itll start (you push the primer to pump some fuel into the engine)

I really think metroid prime is the basis for what the metroids would become

and as seen in past Metroids these things have a very fast evolutionairy or mutating process

I have no idea what your first point was trying to convey, but as for the second, the Pirates named it Metroid Prime. There were already plenty of other Metroids around before it. What's an even worse logic gap is that the pirates indicate they experimented on it with Phazon, but the creature data indicates it is the source of Phazon. I dunno. I'm thinking they just slipped up with some areas of the story :P

I havent beaten Metroid Prime yet (but i read this anyway because the metroid prime guya nd some of his story line was allready spoiled to me by a moronic friend who just wouldnt shut up)

so maybe theres some stuff im missing that would enlighten me better

im still intrigued by what ive read about the chozo calling samus the hatchling and knowing about her way in advance

dont say anything but i do hope the story gives some clues as to how the chozo and samus came together and how she got a power suit built by them

maybe ive missed the story details in other games in the series so if i did you can say it then but if its in prime dont say anything *LOL*

Anyone else finished it yet? I'd like to see some more opinions from more people.

Metroid Prime mutated while being imprisoned by the pirates, so maybe it was more "metroid-like" before the mutations.

It's kinda cute how Retro's story 'fits' the Metroid world almost better than Nintendo's own plot in Fusion.

Hmmm...I haven't beaten the game yet, but I couldn't resist. Besides, spoilers never much bothered me.

My knowledge is not as complete as your own might be, so if you wouldn't mind filling in my holes, or calling my attention to incorrectness, I'd be much obliged.

We know that the Space Pirates named Metroid Prime. What we don't know is why. Why did they call it the "one who came before?" It stands to reason that they, for some reason, believed it to be the patriarch of the Metroid race.

We also know that the Chozo make claims, in diaries and log books, that they created the Metroid race. However, nowhere among their documents do they make mention of an original, nor do they attribute their creation to the tech-copying of another race, presumably Metroid Prime.

So, how does this wash? The Space Pirates must have been aware of the Chozo documents, and the claims that the Chozo made. In light of this information, they still called this sealed up thing "Prime." Why? What about it drove them to disavow the claims of the Chozo and rename this beast as the historic origin of the Metroid race?

I don't know yet...I haven't beaten the game. :p

We do? I've never seen such a reference. And don't you dare say Fusion.

No...I picked up on this while reading the thread. So many people seemed convinced that the Chozo created the Metroids...so I figured they had good reason to believe this...which led me to believe that the Chozo had it documented.

If, however, they never documented it, then my question has been answered. They never created the Metroids, and Prime is the progenetor (if that's even a word :p ).

The Pirates never indicate Prime is the originator of all Metroids. Their reason for naming it such is much lamer, if I remember right from the logs. And if it IS considered the source of all Metroids (in addition to all Phazon and a meteor), that is so beyond lame as to shake my faith in humanity :P

Anyhow, I got a response from one of the devs about some of the more egregious story holes, I'll see what he says.

Well if you guys get that GC Movie Disc that has Samus on the cover at say a local Target or EB they have a history of all the Metroids and thier linking storylines.

I was lead to believe that Metroid Prime was a Metroid fused with Phazon, and that Metroid Prime is like a Metroid Space Pirate. Because it has the same type of Suit and such. And when you brake that off you fight the real Metroid Prime. Which leads me to believe that the Space Pirates used/created Metroid Prime with Phazon in order to make even larger quantites of Phazon. I may be wrong I have not read all the Log Entrys and such.

Anyone else think that Final Metroid Prime (non-spider) looks a lot like a Krazoa Spirit from Starfox Adventures?! I think they look a lot a like.

ok so ive been digging through all the official metroid Literature i have

and heres what ive discovered the Metroids are NOT a natural life form they were created

in the instruction booklet for Super Metroid they talk about the Metroids being created for peace probably

its not till fusion that its said that they are created by the Chozo

so it was stated before hand that yes the Metroids are an artificial life form just seems to be unclear on who created them to me



and yeah ive gotten farther and read the instructions and things and it says the chozo did raise Samus it seems and it tells of how they found her

it doesnt say on what planet or anything though

If the Super Metroid manual says that the Metroids were created artificially, I'll buy that the Chozo are responsible. But all that does is make things more confusing.

well it seems everyone want to use the metroids as some source of energy

so maybe the chozo created them to 1 keep the X in line and then get energy from them after they absorbed the X

or something like that

I refuse to recognize the X as a part of the main Metroid story arc. I doubt we'll ever hear about them again.

There's a comic that goes over it, it was in Nintendo Power a long ass time ago (based off Super Metroid). There was a thread about it and the others like it a long time ago. It actually fit surprisingly well into the overall story, I was surprised at that.

Well at the end of Fusion she gets her regular suit back because she fuses with the parasite that was in one of the SA-X clones.

Ironically, I noticed this not from beating Fusion, but from "uploading" the Fusion suits into Prime. The final Prime suit in Fusion style gives it away.

sure its the same color orange but look at it in the cut scenes she doesnt have the big ball things on top its just the fusion suit in orange

its not her original suit its the fusion suit but now she has the Ice Beams

and see for your self that that is most certainly not her original suit just the fusion suit in orange

I kinda wish that Fusion was not the most current chapter, rather had it be the Prequal I guess. Prime seems to be a better lead into the next game then Fusion, Fusion tried to many things I don't like. Like giving Samus so much personality, and creating new characters like that stupid Adam Computer, I hope we don't have to deal with that stupid computer calling her "Lady" in all the future sequals. Retro should be in charge now, they keep in more faithful.

As I'm playing more of Fusion, I'm appreciating it more for what it is, but at the same time, I don't want it to influence the future of the series - if we're lucky enough to even see another Metroid.

Well 1,2 and Super came out all with in a little closer time period. So maybe one other Metroid Sequal will come out before we have to wait another 8+ years.

if you see the interview with miyamoto and the retro guys they ask about a sequel and Miyamoto says something to the effect that you wont have to wait another 8 years for a sequel

so it would seem to me that another one will be done and will be done by retro

though i think itll take place after Fusion maybe thats why they have the Fusion suit unlockable in prime maybe its a hint of something

just a thought

I can't see how the next Metroid can outdo Prime. At best, I'm hoping for a Majora's Mask - a quirky gaiden that I'll happen to love, but most others will not.

I dont know i felt that way about Super Metroid that nothing could top it

while i expected Prime and Fusion to be good i had no idea that Prime would come out and beat Super Metroid

so only time will tell if a Sequel bests prime
