LE colored PS2s out in U.S.

After years of waiting, Sony finally released the limited-edition PS2s stateside: Silver, White, Blue, Red and Yellow. They're only available at the PlayStation store at the Metreon in S.F.

I ran down and picked up the yellow one this morning. The finish is a nice, glossy lacquered look that is highly reflective. $314 (with matching vertical stand) is a little pricey, but it's just too obscene/bizarre to pass up, imo. They have stacks of around 50 of each color there now; I'm curious how long unitl they're all gone...

I would love to have a Silver one. It would go very well with my tv.

Mmmm..I'm not one for specially colored systems but that Blue PS2 looks down right sexy.

or just send your system to colorconsoles for like a 10th of that price.....theyll do your stand as well.

I really wanted that yellow PS2. but at that price its not really worth it for me...

eh, if you already havea PS2, why not paint it yourself?

all you need is some nice spray paint (acryillic?) and clear coat and youre set.

...taking apart a ps2 should be that hard...

If the cost was more reasonable and they were more widely available... I would buy one of those. Maybe red or blue....

I'd rather see them release that translucent blue one though, to be honest.

How many are they releasing? I like that White one..would go nice with the other white systems.

Damn, those are pretty cool, especially the silver and white ones. I wonder if they could be bought online?

The white PS2 looks awesome, as does the silver one. That blue one looks good as well.

I don't think coloured shells for Dreamcast are expensive or too hard to come by.



Speaking of which, there is probably an obvious answer for this but... why aren't there coloured shells for the newer consoles?

I think some importer/etailer offered colored ps2 cases a while back (buyrite maybe?), but they were fairly expensive iirc. I haven't seen any for Xbox or GC, largely because the shells for these consoles are fairly complex... Personally, I've never been a fan of non-official aftermarket cases. They often lack the logos and details of the real deal. Colorconsoles is a better alternative, but they're fairly pricey and often unable to take orders due to high demand and a tiny workforce.

there have never been colored shells for nintendo systems (except for the ones they make) because nintendo always patents their systems casings. for some reason no other company does and thats why you see 3rd party colored cases.

if they were the same price as a regular PS2 id might consider trading in my current ps2 and getting a white or silver one but for that price forget it

one day i think ill probably have one of my SNES's painted Silver and one of my NES's painted bronze

that way they fit with my gold N64 and Platinum GC

That makes sense...

But then couldn't a third party make a new shell design? For example, a company could come alone and make an original shell that didn't make Xbox look so damn ugly. :p

Erm...Sega had official shells for the DC.

Only Sony would have the nerve to not only sell a woefully underpowered system for the same price or more than the competition but jack up the price a hundred bucks just for a color change.

Hey, if people are stupid enough to buy a different color at that price...

MechDeus: true, but even Nintendo, the kings of boosting hardware sales through changing the color of the system, don't stoop to price increases like that. It seems like Sony is mercilessly raping stupid people's wallets. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just think it's ugly.

Now if they where region free then it would be worth it, but I doubt they are :p

I use mine to play games and I have alot of fun doing it too, maybe next time I'm enjoying my SNES I should be thinking "boy what an underpowered system" ;)
