The best sports games on the current consoles

FIFA, like most EA games, has sucked ever sicne it went 3D.

Sicne then there have been some great footy games though, such as the Worldwide Soccer games on Saturn and Striker Pro / UEFA Striker for Dreamcast (which Europeans love and NAers seem to hate, strangely enough)....

The Pro Evo / Winning 11 series has a great reputation. But alas, I have not owned a version yet. Maybe soon. :)

Hey, not so! World Cup '98 and FIFA '99 were two of the most fun sports games I've ever played. It was pretty much downhill from there, though. If Winning Eleven is coming here (uh, it's not just J-League & national teams, is it?) I may have to check that out, especially since World Cup 2002 was so wack.

I didn't play the first one but 97 and 98 are both pretty similar, so I'd guess it's more like 98.

The comparison between 97 and 98 is interesting. In some ways 97 was a bit more fun, but 98 was more full featured. The thing with 98 was that you could score more cheap goals, if I recall... and there were little problems like the took out the scoreboard animations and whatnot. ---- It was nice to have more international teams (Czech!) and the Premiership in the 98 though. I actually painstakingly went though and used the rename feature to rename each and every Premiership player so I could play in the accurate league for that game.

I guess it's a toss up which game was better but they were both great fun. The gameplay was some of the best I have found in 3D football, even if it was not that simmish.



I wish I could have combined the features, teams, options, and training modes from Striker Pro 2000 (which are all soooooooooo cool!) with the gameplay of WWS97/8. Then you'd have the best football game ever. :)

I hate to be anal, I really do, but the recent Xbox Sega baseball game is called simply World Series Baseball....NOT WSB 2K3. 2K3 is coming to consoles next year.

Chalk up another vote for Hot Shots Golf 3 - I hate golf, but this was some of the most fun I had this year.

Winning Eleven Six is coming Stateside as well - yay!

I also think the gameplay of Tennis 2K2 is much deeper than Virtua Tennis' - you have more control of your shots, which makes rallies longer and more interesting. I also like how they toned down the auto-dive that ruined so many points in the original VT. I've spent many many hours playing this four-player - it's ace (ha ha).

Can anyone comment on which version of NBA Street is better? I'm most interested in a comparison between the Gamecube and PS2 controllers, but any details would help (I need to pick up this game).

I have both WE5, WE6, and WE6 101% English translation, and they include national teams (there is a 2002 World Cup roster patch out, I think) and most European clubs. If you want to play the JFA, there is WE6 J-League, all Japanese.

WE6 is the best nextgen football game, period. Heavy in text, so the English patch helps. But IF it does come out here you should definately get it. It's SOOO good.

Well, I know this is an old thread, but, I didn't feel like starting a new one just to talk about this:

I borrowed Sega Soccer Slam from the store today (seeing as how it's spring break and I've nothing to do over the weekend), and my brother, a friend, and I have been playing it for about 4 hours straight. -and we're still finding new tricks here and there.

I don't know if it gets old really quick, but so far, it seems like a really polished and fun game. This is the most fun I've had with a sports game since Brutal Sports Football, and I have a feeling not too many people know about it, or are put off by the ugly box art and character designs (which all tend to grow on you as you play the game, and all their animations and characterizations win you over). I'm surprised more people don't mention it...I'm playing the Xbox version btw, although I assume the 'cube version's pretty similar (no Dolby though).

Favorite moment so far: Performing the "spotlight kick" with El Diablo, as the 'bullet time' engages and the game sounds muffle out, you hear children in the background chanting his name.
