Well the sequel is almost here, And since I know that this thread is going to be posted by somebody, I think I should do it first.
So what do you think based on Previews and Books? I beleive that it's going to be the best movie out there when it hits theaters.

My friends and I have purchased tickets for 8 PM the day of release, and I'm much looking forward to it.
Haven't heard of any midnight screenings, though I'm sure their are many.
Damnit, I wanted to put this thread up, I'm the biggest fan of the movies here! Yes, I got tickets for the midnight showing, and the day after. The reviews should start coming in this week, some British mag had a review up allready but it was a fake. Next week the soundtrack will be out, then the week after the movie itself is out :) I'm going to read the Two Towers again starting tommorow.
Some things you can probably bet on allready-
Best cgi ever for Gollum. The main reason is because of his performance (its been rumored the academy is considering a new catagory for cgi performances...).
Intense as hell battles, this movie will be less fantasy driven and more gritty. Many reports have said the battle of Helm's Deep is 45 minutes, some more like 15 minutes. I'm thinking 15, 45 is just too much and would take up too much room for the story.
So that review was a fake eh? That's too bad.
I've heard pretty much everywhere that Helm's Deep is only fifteen minutes as well, and that's fine by me. I'd much rather see more of the story.

Well, I'm VERY excited about it. Other than Equilibrium, its the most anticipated movie of this month :)
Trailer looks great, and after playing Two Towers, I'm more excited then ever :p

i started reading the book last january, and only about halfway through it. better get started....
For the last few days I've only dreamt about watching this movie. This is going to be two long weeks...
Anyone watch the "special" tonight? It didn't seem to show all that much that I didn't already know..
I saw the wb special on the two towers, very nice. But I think they gave to much away.
I saw the special too, I guess I wasn't too spoiled because I'm reading the book right now. I'm more than halfway through and I've got a week and a half left!
If you're worried about spoilers, don't listen to the Fellowship 4-disc Peter Jackson commentary, he gives away some bit parts about Return of the King...
PS: That part that showed Sam getting hurt made me wince...
I'm glad alot you are reading the book, the way the story was meant to be told. That being said, I simply can't wait for this movie! And it's actually pretty soon too...

I started Two Towers yesterday, and mean to finish it by the 19th (I'm taking the day off to go to the theater).

Two Towers is less like the book than Fellowship, so I'm guessing RotK will be even lesser like the books. Oh well. For me, its not what is changed that I don't like, its more about what is left out. Reading the books after watching the movie, I like the movies characters alot more. The dialogue between characters is alot better in the movies, imo. Reading the parts where they first meet and help Theoden would sound awful if they took that dialogue and used it in the movie, and even while reading it in the context of the book feels over the top in a Monty Python and the Holy Grail way.
Well yeah, that goes without saying. Tolkien's writing style and dialouge could never translate well into a movie, much less an action movie, which is basically what I think The Two Towers will be. I hope they didn't leave too much out of the movie though. Like you said, if anything can hurt it that would be it.Quote:

I'm also wondering how they're gonna do the whole Gandalf vs. Balrog thing. That should be very interesting.
Pretty much nothing major has been left out going from the reviews I've read, and things that are changed or added sound awesome. The only complaints about characters so far is that we don't get enough of them, this includes Gandalf and Treebeard. Actually, some people have said Faramir isn't too different than Boromir for the most part (which goes against his whole noble charactization in the book), but...well, you'll see.
You're right about the dialogue. What it reads like to me is an old style romance, much like Malory's Works, which most definitely does not translate well to a movie.Quote:

Word is that TTT is the most changed from the books in terms of story, though what I was getting at with my RotK comment was the Scouring of the Shire..
You're right, I've just read 3 reviews where they say that PJ said out of all 3 Two Towers is the most changed.
And I know what you mean by that last part. Still, looking at how well FOTR was stuctured I'm not worrying about stuff like that because the movies work. For every nitpick about not including or changing something there are tons more reasons to back up why they did it.
I started reading the books back in the 4th grade and finished em all by the time I was in the 6th grade...i was such a dork and I still am actually :lol: I can't wait for two towers, already have tickets for friday and i saw the trailer which was really well done

I very much hate stuff like this. The fact that so many mass media outlets have printed something similar annoys me to no end.
Its a nice thought, but I hope the person who wrote the article understands the story is based on a much different and older world than the one we live in today. For a series that is filled with such humanity and the fact that the orcs were curropted by the ultimate evil it is silly to label it as patriotic trash. Its not a cultural or political difference that is going on in LOTR, its about the genocide of all the world's populace. If the story was told today, it'd about humanity fighting Satan himself.
I'm don't know whether or not the writer realizes it, but I'm sure several gullible people will not do so. I'm pretty sure Time Magazine had a similar article, and I'm certain I've seen it elsewhere besides.
That Satan comment kind of rubs me the wrong way, I think. How do you get that?
To me, LOTR is a good versus evil story, its not about twisted politics or differences in belief. What I got from the article was that the person who wrote it was concerned Tolkien's story was too black and white in the portrayal of the evil of the orcs and that easy way of thinking could be conveyed to the unwitting populace through the movie. This person seemed worried that Tolkien and PJ were "dehumanizing" the orcs just like anyone who would want to quickly go to war would, instead of trying to reach them and finding alternate ways of solving problems. What I meant by comparing Sauron to Satan is that Sauron can't be talked to or bartered with, so action must be taken.
I see how you can come to this conclusion, but there's really a variety of ways you can view this, I think, and since this isn't a discussion on the books, but the movie, I'll just let this go. :pQuote:

The term "Epic Movie" has just been redefined. I was expecting something incredible, but what I got was beyond everything I hoped for.
I am in sheer awe of the last three hours. If you'll excuse me, I shall now stumble around attempting to regain my hold on this pathetically mudane reality.
I just got back from it too, and it downright blew me away. The Battle of Helm's Deep was possibly the most breathtaking scene I've ever seen in cinema, the plot was fabulous, and the movie was beyond epic.
In short, this movie was to Fellowship what The Empire Strikes Back was to A New Hope, and I hope to punch up a very glowing review of it soon.
Oh, and yes, Gimli and Smeagol rule all :D
I very much plan on seeing it again when my brother comes home for the holidays, it will be an event for the whole family. Yes indeed...we wants it my precious...good little hobbitses...give the ring to Smeagol, yes?

I saw it this morning at the 12:00 AM screening. Woo..awesome movie. It was definitely worth waiting in line for (and the line started at 7:00AM Tuesday, not that I stayed in it that long). But I don't know if it was worth only getting 3 hours of sleep before going to school.
Oh well..good stuff.
Golem is pretty messed up with the split personality.
Overall it is much better than The first. Three amazing stories going all at once with awesome battle scenes.

I can't say I was disappointed with The Two Towers. I don't think it's the equal to Fellowship though; maybe I have to see it a few more times. The battle sequences were unbelievable and a testament to the crew. I'll reserve my opinion until I see it again.

going to the movies at 10pm and getting home at 4am is so.... not wise.
I loved it, but I wasn't drawn completely into it like I was with Fellowship, but I think I know exactly why. Whoever is running the theatre I seen it in (The Rave, which has stadium seats and all super dital whatever sound) should be shot in the head, because just like Attack of the Clones my friends and I were stuck in a theatre with shitty sound. I was so drawn into Fellowship that if my friends even muttered a word I'd tell them to shut up, but because of the limp sound of Two Towers half the time I couldn't help but crack jokes.
i went right after school to get tickets for the 3:45 show, and i got in fine...
fantastic... awesome... great
although i think Gimli's comic-relief was a bit too obvious, and slightly detracted from the overall experience

don't get me wrong, i thought he was verry funny too...
i just thought he was a bit overused, and that pretty much all of the comedy was based around him and gollum... which was very star-wars-ish
i definately think that his comedy detracted from the helms deep seige, when he's complaining about not being able to see, just as the charge begins...
but he was still very funny
Yeah, I could've used a bit less comic releif from Ghimli, like the horse thing for instance.
I forged a parent release form to get out of school early to go see it today. I was very pleased with what I saw, ever bit of it was pure eye candy splendor. The opening battle with the Balrog had my jaw gaping, of course this was in the first 3 minutes. Amazing movie.
The only complaints I have are that they made Ghimli a little bit too silly, even though I still found some of it funny. I think if they would have cut out his bumbling in the fight with the riders I would have been more pleased. But they still showed how hardcore he was in the end.
The other is that the extra romance written in between Aragorn and Arwin seemed out of place. But that wasn't too much of a deterrent.
Over all 9 out of 10. While the Fellowship recieved a 10. Of course this is subject to change assuming I see the Two Towers a few more times. Which I plan on doing.

while reading the book, i had imaged the Ents look a lot different, but i think they pulled it off.
and those soldiers marching into the Black Gate.... hoooo.... scary.

Another part is probably the fact that I read the book just a month or so ago, and they changed alot..alot. Many of these changes, such as when Aragorn went over the cliff and has his dream of Arwen, were not necessary, IMO. *shrug* The film did keep me rooted to my seat though, so I give it props for that.
I try to look at films/books as seperate entities, unless the book gets raped. So far, some straying has been made, but personally, I don't care; they've got the main story down and they did a very good job with the movie.
It could be much, much worse; Jurassic Park, anyone?
Well, I saw the movie Yesterday,It was better than Fellowship, It capture more epic scenes and battles. And also established more detail on each character. Can't wait for Return of the King.

saw it today with Tracer and some other friends - loved every damn second of it and am going back to see it Christmas Day - man...what a masterwork - those battle scenes make Braveheart's look like a kindergarten schoolyard tussle.
Best part (damn near made me cry) - when Gandolf appears on the mountain at the coming of dawn and charges the way down towards the orc hordes at Helms Deep with that army - the way the camera zoomed out and showed the massiveness of that scene with the steepness of the mountain just created a knot in my throat - I teared up and almost cried. FILM OF THE YEAR.

The movie was brilliant and action packed, while still managing its gentle curve of the story. The main issue people had with the story change was how Farimir was greedy for the ring. In the books he was the opposite of his brother, and had no desire to wear it. Great movie, and I want to see it again. I drank a huge Dasani water before I went into the movie and had to go 30 minutes into it, yet held it due to not wanting to miss a scene. I was planning to leave during the Frodo scenes, as they were rather drab then Gollum made his appearance!
I personally enjoyed the Two Towers MORE than the original. More plot development, less establishment and very action oriented. The battle for Helms Deep was truly a sight I would love to see again.
Don't drink lots of water before you watch a 3 hour movie - REPEAT!
Heh - anyway I did enjoy this one more than Fellowship, even though I loved that movie - the action in this one was more to my liking with the huge grand scale battles and all - Can't wait to see it again.

As everyone knows by now, the movie was awesome. I especially liked the part where as Aragon was tracing the hobbit trail, we were seeing all the action take place. Cool stuff.
And we all saw the battle at Helm's Deep. Now can you imagine the actual war?

Gollum was funny sometimes, sad other times. On my second veiwing I heard some idiots laughing at stuff that wasnt' funny =/ Gollum is incredible in their first encounter, but he was much healthier looking than what I imagined him (all the teases of him made him out to be all dark green and sickly didn't help either). One thing I liked about his funny/sad bits were that at one point some girls sitting behind me were giggling at his antics on second, then awwwwwing the next.
movie kicked ass, great movie just have to wait a year now, dam this is gonna be long wait. i hope the DVD is out by summer, great movie

The theatre I was in laughed at both Gollum (the girls thought he was cute) and Gimlis crazy antics. Also, The Return of the King trailer wasn't present before or after the movie, although I'm sure it's completed. Peter Jackson reformats things for the DVD I heard. Sounds good!
They had to. By giving short releases to the tension and sincerity building up, they make is strong by comparison. It's common storytelling. If you just let drama build and build and build, it often comes off as badly portrayed and overdone.Quote:

The fact that they can balance the Gollum storyline, the ring, the war, the men controversy and this comedy all in one movie while keeping the towers and such alive is astounding writing. Especially since the book took the easy way and followed Frodo for 1/2 and then Aragorn for the other 1/2. Instead we have a glimpse of everything unfolding in a soap-opera-like switch but instead of stupid staring to sequence they did it properly.

I had no problem with it, but I can see someone complaining about getting really into one part of the movie, like Helm's Deep, and then they all of the sudden jump to Frodo and Sam, which just brings everything down a bit. I know it was necessary, but I can just see someone complaining about that.
I can also see someone who didn't read the books getting a little confused with all the scene jumping and various adventures of everyone. I know my friend was asking a million questions during the movie before I finally told him to just watch the damn thing.

They didn't have to. They could have been much more subtle about it, and I would have been happy. The innumerable short jokes grated on me after a bit. Several people I've talked to have actually agreed with me about that, though not about the rest of the movie. :sweat:
Theonering.net says that Peter Jackson makes two cameos, one as a wildman charging in to burn down Rohan, and another as a soldier who throws a rock down on the orcs who are trying to knock down the door to Helm's Deep.
Very good movie, no one laughed at Gollum which is good, I thought his parts were sad. Gimli was pretty funny though. Legolas is just bad ass.

Well, Finally watched it today, and it was pretty good. Somewhat slow, but the story, epic battle and action scenes were great.
Right now, I still like Fellowship little better, but it might change if I rewatch it.
Legolas was kick ass in the fist film, and he still a bad ass here. Ghimli finally got to show some of his skills, and he was pretty funny too.
Golum was excellent, great CGI work, especially in the part when he slides on the river stones among the water. Very real.
I'm not complaining about the slower parts, but it could have been little more action packed.

Seen it today and I enjoyed it, but with that said I'm not a big a fan as say Green, or other diehard fans.
Anyone remember the Hobbit animated Movie? it's old I think, but that was my first glimpse into that world.

Well, The tastes are different, I guess. For me it being an epic fantasy story that have both character drama, and great action sequences.
Ents were also nicely done, and their attack on Isengard was cool.
Meh, this movie was decent, but nowhere near fantastic. I’ve never read the books (nor do I ever plan to), so I viewed this film with an objective eye. Here’s just a few quick notes:
- This movie was plagued with the same thing I did not like about Fellowship, the agonizingly slow pacing. Thirty minutes of a mountain range is only interesting for so long.
- I don’t really understand the editing that took place in this film. Characters would be doing one thing, and the moment they finish their sentence, *BAM*, it’s now night time and they’re doing something completely different, some of the scene transitions were just awkward. I also felt they could have cut many extraneous scenes from the movie.

- When Aragon falls off that cliff, and is knocked unconscious, how is it that he comes back with the knowledge of the oncoming army, if he was out cold, and where did that horse come from?

Anyway, I did enjoy some things in the movie, such as the battles and Gimili’s banter, but the boring stuff far outweighed the cool stuff.

Truly a spectacular movie. I will now love flaming trees jumping into water for the rest of my life. Unfortunatly, the names of people and places are so fucking weird I often forget, and now i need to rewatch it again. :(

Helm's Deep, while having alot of action suffered from too much blur of swords swinging and not enough clear action like the final battle in Fellowship. The last part of the battle, combined with the Isengard attack almost make up for it, though. I'm going to be really let down if every fight in ROTK is just gigantic cg armies charging each other with ultra fast cuts of our heroes swipping at the screen in a blur.
I liked it. They added in stuff that shouldn't have been added in, and left out stuff that shouldn't have been left out, but I still liked it. I'd say that it was on par with FotR.
I saw it again tonight with my brother and some friends. I enjoyed it just as much, and my opinion still stands.
The people in the damn theater were annoying as hell though. Babies crying, people laughing at nothing, cell phones. It was awful.

Saw it again, this watching for CG and small things. Only thing out of the ordinary I noticed: When Gandalf whistles for the horse, he's wearing white low-top sneakers (Converse-style). Damn.
Other then that, I couldn't find anything screwed-up. Very well done.
WoW Green. My thoughts exactly. Character battles in FOTR, with Aragorn and Legolas taking hordes of Orcs and Uruk-Hi On, with some awesome swordfighting skills on display were great to see. I'm not saying that it was bad, but first film done battles better.
As for Horse, maybe it followed it master smell, or Arwin spell to protect Aragorn work, and lead the horse to him.
I loved the movie but there were a few changes that annoyed me. My biggest problem was what they did to Faramir. He is not supposed to act that way. He's the good brother. He lets Frodo go in the caves after hearing about the ring in the books. In fact at one point Gandalf I believe makes a point that everything might have been better if Faramir instead of Borimor had been sent by Gondor at first. He should not have tried to take Frodo and the Ring to Gondor... in TTT, that's against his character completely.
bbobb, I kind of liked what they did w/ Faramir's character, making him see the mistakes of his brother and realizing what is wrong. More realistic too, if that matters.
Anyway, I dont think spoilers need to be marked at this point.
I loved the movie, so great.
And the ents dont get enough attention. They where awesome, especially when that one put ran up to the water and put out it's branches.
bbobb, they made Faramir that way so over time he'd grow as a character. I like the change, when he lets them go the consequences of his actions make him seem more brave.
mman, PJ has said alot of what was cut was the Treebeard stuff, so we'll get to see much more of him in the extended cut (like the scene where the Hobbits drink the Ent draught).

I don't think either really hurt the film, however.
Actually it was great to see Elves troops when they arrived to Helm's Deep. They added some great fire power to defending forces.

cool...i got there 30 minutes before it started (on the 5th day it was out) and the theatre was packed. so i had to sit in the 2nd row from the front and was wondering if the fight scenes were more clear farther back or not.Quote:

Isn't the film blur a side effect of film ? That's what I seemed to remember... that even the first part looked blurry in the theaters but absolutely awesome on DVD...
Something to do with 24 frames per second vs 30 frames per second ?
In any case, I didn't notice much blur in the battle scenes but definitely on those quick pans on the landscapes etc
I actually sat down and watched the extended cut of FotR (which is strange, seeing as I didn't like the movie when I first saw it), and I must say, compared to this, Two Towers is such a sloppy mess of a movie, I can not for the life of me understand how people can toss around words like "perfection" when speaking about this film.
Oh well, here's hoping the extended cut of this movie will set things straight.
I liked FotR more as well.
I'll agree FotR is a far more coherent, far more refined version of a film. However, I can definitely see how a lot of people prefer the second one. It's action packed, with some great battle scenes, in addition to having a lighter mood. The whole movie felt far more 'fun' without being a superior film.
However, I still say I really enjoy the second movie and I am totally holding off judgement until the inevitable release of the Two Towers Extended Edition DVD :D

Anyway, I did enjoy some things in the movie, such as the battles and Gimili’s banter, but the boring stuff far outweighed the cool stuff.
Aragon's horse was sent by Arwen to help him get to Helms Deep, while on route to Helms Deep he runs into the (10,000) Orc Warriors. Which are also headed for Helms Deep.
I say perfection, as it's the best movie I've ever seen, beating out my previous favorite movie, the first one.Quote:

I don't want to get all Opa on you and put you on trial for your opinions, but I'm just wondering why you didn't like it so much? You say it was agonizingly slow, but it's much, much faster than the first movie ever was.

i thought the movie felt very long, but since i was completely enthralled by it, it was a good kind of long
... i've only felt that way about FotR and The Insider
omfgninjas, I felt the film was slow, because constantly I found myself yawning, and almost falling asleep during the movie, and as for the editing, the transitions from scene to scene just seemed sloppy and awkward to me.
But, my opinion of the movie will probably change once I see the extended cut, because before I saw the longer version of FotR, I thought it was a crappy movie as well, but my opinion changed after seeing the film the way it was originally intended.

You know... When I saw Gandolf walking into what's-his-name... The corrupted king's palace, I swear he was wearing white sneakers. During the same scene, however, I saw his feet again and they looked fairly normal... mm.
