Famitsu Reviews Panzer Dragoon Orta

"If there was any doubt in your mind that a Japanese developer could create a triple-A title for the Xbox, those worries should forever be put to rest. In the latest issue of Famitsu Xbox, Smilebit's Panzer Dragoon Orta received three 10's and an 8 for a total of 38 and the prestigious platinum award. Also worth mentioning is several unlockables present in the new Panzer Dragoon installment, including the original Panzer Dragoon, released previously only on the Saturn, as well as several CG movies from the three previous Panzer Dragoon titles.

With just a little over a month till the U.S. release of Orta, Xbox gamers should be saving cash and vacation time in anticipation for what could be the greatest episode in an already classic series. Panzer Dragoon Orta releases domestically January 14th."

The extras sound sweet. knew about unlockable PD1 but didn't know about the movies from the 1st 3 games. Too bad i don't have an XBOX

Famitsu Xbox are usually reasonably strict with review scores, way more so than Famitsu Weekly. Panzer Dragoon Orta is now the highest scoring game, overtaking the previous top 3 of Halo, JSRF and Tekki.

Not to hijack, but my girlfriend is now considering a subscription to Play after watching me rip through basically every review by Halverson and Brady Fiechter in about an hour-and-a-half span. Keep in mind that I never really read GameFan and this was my first exposure to Play, but that I used to subscribe to NP and I currently subscribe to and tolerate GI. I was and still am in awe that these people get paid to write about games.

The art is fabulous, and I really like the layout. If I was illiterate, I'd be in heaven.

Anyone else kind of like that about Play, though - pretending that Halverson is right and that 3 or 4 times a month a heartbreakingly good foundation-shifting type of game is released? I like the hype, makes video games seem like more fun than they are.

Halverson's enthusiasm can be infectious...Play seems to concentrate on the good parts of every game that's reviewed, rather than tear games down based on nitpicky details. It's refreshing.

Not surprised at the Orta scores, but I will be surprised if it sells.

I don't see enthusiasm. I see Mark Madden pushing the last two years of WCW mixed with the guys who sell knives on syndicated channels at 3am.

When I don't have to have played a game or even know anything about to know that the review is total bullshit, something is wrong.

Bio, I try to be enthusiastic with my reviews. Pointing out the positives and such, but Play takes it to unbelievable levels. It's like they're in the back pocket of every publisher in the world with their positivity. Some of their reviews literally sound like something a PR guy would spew out.

I have no problem with Halverson's enthusiasm. What I have a problem with is that if he likes every game he reviews, how is the review useful to me?

I probably would have imported games like Hermie Hopperhead but then I would think to myself, "Is this game actually that good or is it just another game he's praising because he praises almost every game?".

Well yeah, he overdoes it - that whole thingy about him taking credit for Contra: Shattered Soldier having difficulty select and two extra levels was kind of sickening.

But it's still more enjoyable than reading jaded bitch-sessions. I don't take him, his reviews, or Play that seriously, but it is a welcome distraction...

Well after playing the demo this game could have gotten scored whatever and I still would have bought it(It would take a major fuck up for it to somehow plummet from the quality the demo sets you yp for). As for sales, this game has a chance of selling decently, but it'll never sell major ammounts.

Thanks Jay. Your avatar actually inpsired me to bring back my Mooninites avatar. The site has seen better days though. As you probably saw, you can't DL the episodes, which is kinda crappy. I'll have to look for another one.

Supply and demand drives the industry, hell, look at the "chip shortages" in the NES days, and the "manufacturing" problems at the PS2 launch. Decrease supply, increase demand, then when demand hits a high, increase the supply to cash in.

I finally got to try the Orta kiosk demo today and I got to play for a good 10-15 minutes... Wow... it took a while to get used to it and I had to unfortunately play with the godawful hamburger controller which made me cramp up in that short time.. but wow.. even on a POS telly the games looked great and it was a lot of fun.

As soon as I get a Box I'll be picking up Orta and JSRF. Sadly, that's all I really want for Xbox so it'll probably be a while. :(

Forget Famitsu, we all knows ebgames.com has the best reviews.

"Its basically Starfox 64 combined with the missil lock on system from Sonic Adventure flight missions. Take those two give yourself the ability to shoot to the sides and behind you and smack some graphics on it and there you go. Looks beautiful, but the gameplay is kind of repetive. I have the demo for this so your getting it straight from the horses mouth here. "

"1. Your character flies along a pre-determined path. Sure you can go up and down but there is no exploration.
2. Your enemies come in such an abundance that they are very weak. It's like shooting a bunch of weak defenseless bugs. Also they fly so quickly, you can't get a good look at them and go ahhhhhh.
3. The description says that the levels are huge and immersive. I played through the demo level in about 4-5 min. Each level in Halo can take up to 2hr!
4. Not being able to explore bothers me. It makes the game a button tapper pretty much with little strategy involved because you have no say in where and how you attack your enemies.
5. Come on, if the game was free roam, not only could you come up with your own strategy, but also you could get some insane multiplayer going on. Possibly Xbox Live?

Overall I give this game a 7.5/10. Great eye candy, but that doesn't make the game (look at Blood Wake). I mean a pre-determined course and endless enemies makes this game feel like a 3D version of Galaga, except on a Dragon. This game has the same feel as Gun Valkyrie, lot's of hype, lot's of fun, but one of those titles that people describe as "I can't put my finger on what's wrong." "
