Super Mario Sunshine - I think everyone would agree. The most disappointing Mario yet.
Rygar - Too short, too few enemies, DMC ripoff.
GTA:VC - Even worse graphics than GTA3.
Mechassault - I had real big hopes for this, but it looks like they really rushed it. It lacks polish.

My caring for the GBA. I eventually lost interest (due to the screen) and sold it. The new tv connector thing Nintendo is putting out makes it all better, though. I could see Mario Sunshine being one if I thought it was going to be a totally revolutionairy title like Mario 64. Instead I got a great Mario game and I'm happy with that. Eternal Darkness isn't really my cup of tea but I'm not finished with it. RE remake dissapointed me. I got it mainly because EGM said 70% of the game is all new. More like 15%. JSRF dissapointed me too, the lack of being chased in the levels did it in for me.
Jet Set Radio Future. What the fuck Smilebit? You sold out the game to the mythical mainsteam and it still sold like crap.
Dead to Rights shouldve been great, instead it was a total crapfest. Oh well.
Why would you want to move it?
Super Mario Sunshine - Visually it's my favorite of the year.
Animal Crossing - Neat concept but it felt like work.
Eternal Darkness - It's good but not anywhere near what many TNL'er's hyped it to be.
It's a good thing Metroid Prime made up for all these.
I've been really pleased with my most anticipated titles this year.
If I had to pick out a disappointment, I'd guess I'd say Smashing Drive, but that's more because it totally sucked and less because I had high hopes. State of Emergency is also a "strong" candidate, especially on the heels of GTA3.
Games like Rygar and StarFox Adventures weren't the end-all and be-all, either, but I didn't expect that out of them.
GTA: VC- Many people have hyped this game, but I just can't seem to get into it. Maybe I'll try it again in a few months.

Games I had really high hopes for - Rygar, Shinobi, Suikoden III. Suikdoen III stills seems quite good (I've only played the demo), but I was expecting one for the ages after II. Rygar and Shinobi were also good, but not legendary. Same thing with Sunshine- it was good, but I just couldn't get into it. Fortunately, this has been a year free of any massive letdowns.
Shinobi: Much better after level 2, but that camera...blah
Eternal Darkness: Good for one time, and a chore for the next two. Have a blast and never pick it up again.
Super Monkey Ball 2: Why did they do this?! It's such a pale shadow to it's precursor, and as a game on its own, is only good for the minigames. Uncool.
Wow, looking back, I really haven't played any games this year that I was looking foward to, that were a soul crushing dissapointment. But if I really had to pick one, I would have to go with Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX 2, they had the chance to make something great, but instead decided to churn out a mediocre crap fest.
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance - Underwhelming, easy, seemingly uninspired third redux of the SotN formula. I had high hopes for this title, and it ended up being merely OK. Nice visuals, though.
Animal Crossing - Like NeoZeedeater said. I really liked the concept of the game, but after playing it for the second week, it really began to feel like a time-consuming chore. I only play it now whenever animal-crossing.com doles out another NES game.
Dead to Rights - Looks like crap, plays well sometimes but everything (controls) is too unresponsive and forced minigames are shit. Story is worthless.
Eternal Darkness - what with all the hoopla about this game I decided to give it the honest go-around. Promises that it was better then RE were shallow and at the end of the day - Untrue. The game is JUST AS BAD as all other RE's. Boo to that.

A well done game. However, the sense of epic battles is gone with that damn food limit! Also, the micromanagement has been taken to a new level. My poor mouse gets put through hell every time I have to deal with all that micromanagement.
Well, There were some games that I was hoping would be great, and sadly they disapointed. Here are some:
Rygar - Most recent dissapointment. Not original, tedious and sometimes needlessly cheap.
Eternal Darkness - While its an OK game, its nowhere near as GREAT as many people here say. While the story was good, the boring enemies, too easy gameplay, blocky characters, repetetive later section made it less thrilling.
REmake - While a good game, it still a SAME game at heart that we played on PSX six years ago. As Green said, new additions are about 20% of the game.
BloodRayne - It had a very cool premise, and while it full of action, it becomes tedious and even boring. Bad voices, somewhat bland enemies, not polished controls and lack of replability made it dissapointing.
Steel Battalion - It bored me. Mech Assault kicks it's ass in terms of mech combat.

Castlevania: White Night Concerto/Harmony of Dissonance. I'm getting really bored with this Super Metroid/Symphony of the Night gameplay and WNC was just more of the same. I would really enjoy a new Castlevania that plays like old Castlevania.
I haven't played Metroid Fusion yet, but I wonder if I'll dislike it because of the tired gameplay that went stale with the latest Castlevania.

NFL Blitz 2003 - used to be my favorite sports game, but Midway has taken away the create-a-play feature so that you can't exploit holes in the cheap AI
Star Fox Adventures - collectathon w/ uninspiring battles
Metroid Prime - needs option to allow you to assign strafe to C-stick like Goldeneye/Nightfire
(and in contrast pleasant surprises: Sega Soccer Slam, Sky Gunner, Mystic Heroes, Dual Hearts)

JSRF: Totally killed the pace and action of the game. I didn't mind simplifying the graffitti, but taking out the timer and the enemies was just downright retarded. :(

Adding to the stack:
Super Monkey Ball 2 - Most of the puzzles were overdesigned to the point of sheer lunacy, completely ignoring the skill-based inspiration of the first game. And the new multiplayer games were...broken.
Eternal Darkness - The much-lauded Insanity Effects added nothing to the gameplay. Good story, but that was it.
JSRF - No time limits + no analog graffitti = no thanks.
I don't know what you guys expected from the REmake.....it was a REMAKE. I bought my Gamecube for this game. Capcom could have made it an exact, shot-for-shot replica of the original and it would still have been brilliant, but they went and added stuff that they didn't have to - that's fanservice. The original is still the best in the series, even more so with the upgraded graphics. After Prime, my favorite game this year.

Dear Capcom: the solution to gaining better software sales doesn't lie so much in sucking Nintendo's cock and having them pay for exclusivity as much as it does ensuring that the games you actually do make are playable. I never thought it'd be so bad. I'd probably be saying a lot of the same things about Auto Modellista had I purchased it.
Luckily that's been about it for disappointments this year, barring a delay/cancellation of BM7th while Konami makes 4 more Pop'N titles.
I'm sad to see people being dissapointed in DMC. Its not a perfect game, but the good parts overweight the bad.

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance - While not a bad game at all, it was disappointing. Circle of the Moon had a better challenge and overall better design. HoD's castle layout was confusing, lacked flow, and had easy bosses (SotN was easily more difficult). Still a decent game, but not the masterpiece I was expecting from the SotN team.
Devil May Cry - Not a 2002 release, but I managed to find time with it. I was underwhelmed when I played it last year and now that I'm actually trying to beat it, the camera doesn't work at all with its action control schemes... RE controls are better suited for DMC's cinema-style cameras. Hopefully it gets much better but right now it's a "meh" to me...
Gunrgave and Porject Minerva- I actually imported these 2 turds.

Sakura Taisen 4 - thanks Sega, for screwing your fans in order to make your bucks. It's funny cuz I have inside scoop on Red too, and they were not particularly thrilled with how Sega gave them 1/3 of the normal budget and forced them to make the game in 6 months. So Red's rep got screwed, the fans got screwed, Sega milked the fans... but for what? In the long run Sega will be screwed. The game sucks, and only the last 15 minutes of the game had any value. Way to kill my favorite series.
Grandia Xtreme - I don't know if it has anything to do with Enix, but GameArts has definitely fallen a lot since they were bought up. Grandia Xtreme was a game I was excited for since Grandia is my favorite game of all time. I spent $80 on the import Grandia II just so I could play it the very day it came out, and I beat it 4 days later. It was fun... dumbed down... only half the game Grandia was... but still enjoyable. Along comes this trash which literally took out everything that made the Grandia's good. Instead we get a game that forces you to fight and to fight and to fight. No need for story! No need for character development! No need for new locales! Yes the Grandia battle system is fun, and is the most complex of all console RPG systems. But it alone does not a game make. Grandia Xtreme plays out like a sick joke.
Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance - what can I say. I absolutely hate this game. The fact that people can defend this gets on my nerves. Would people even care if the main character didn't carry a whip and had the name "Castlevania" plastered on it? I mean, it's got about as much gameplay as the Snail Maze that came with the Sega Master System. But it's worse because people all praise HoD to high heaven. "Yeah, we like games where the enemies all die in one hit, and where we will never die. Oh don't forget grafix are all that matter!" At least the snail maze doesn't pretend like it's anything else. I'm not knocking the exploration factor in HoD. I like that aspect of it. But the enemies could have not existed considering how useless they are. And that would have been way preferable. I mean honestly... think about it from a game design point of view. Anyone could make a maze game with filler enemies. Slap a CV/Konami brand name over it and the crowd goes wild. Tsk tsk.

JSRF- OK, I've only played it for a hour/ hour and a half so this may change. I love the lack of a timer, allows you to explore the levels at your own pace. However, the tag system, division of gameplay, and the new looks for the characters turned me off. I still enjoyed the whole JSRF world but the game lacked.
Castlevania: HOD- I loved this game starting out, and honestly I played through it just to enjoy the visuals. Unfortunately it's sickeningly easy, the magic system wasn't as useful as COTM, and Legion...what the hell did they do to Legion?!? One of the coolest SOTN bosses reduced to a blob in the middle of the screen with barely any offense....twice.
Mario Sunshine- I loved Mario 64 for the pure fun of exploring the castle and stumbling upon a new secret or level. Sunshine just lacked that magic, it's a good game but it's cut and dry "complete this goal" instead of being a experience.
Phantasy Star Online 1 and 2- I made a pledge not to hand Sega full retail for a game for say, a year or two, then I broke and picked this up at full retail. Part 2 is decent but no where near the epic that was part 1. The new lobby is dull, multi-player has a horrid camera, and they did little to modify the DC's original engine. Between Version 2 last year and this, the magic of PSO is dead for me. *-neo
Mario Sunshine (GC) - Mario's fruity ass backpack. Oh, and the tremendously horrible music. And the sleepy gameplay. And the pathetic new character designs. Oh, and the fact that it sucks.

I hated Mario Sunshine, how dumb lets run around the world cleaning up spray paint with a gay looking pack and call it a game. This game in my opinion brought the Mario series to a whole new low..
And a close second place for me at least was Star Wars Rebel Assault. I thought that player control lacked, all you can really do is strife back and forth and if you are lucky do a barrel roll. I don't know maybe I got spoiled with X-wing came out for the PC...
And how could we all forget about Madden 2002. First I am not much for that series of sporting game and second I fricken hate John Madden. He should be shot in the head.. just my humble opinion..

GTA Vice actually fits as a disappointment to me, because I actually had liked previous ones.
You guys are all insane. Mario Sunshine was damn near perfect. Best Mario game since Mario 3 (not counting Yoshi's Island).
Super Monkey Ball 2 is the biggest dissapointment by far. The level design is waaaaaaaayyyyyyyy to gimiky, and none of the feel of the original remained.
I thought Tekken 2 was kick ass, but after that is was all over..
My biggest disappointment is Gamecube in general.
I've said it before but I love the Cube hardware and I have been dying to get one... but there is simply no software I want since I don't like the few decent games that came out this year. I don't like survival horror games so Resident Evil and Eternal Darkness don't interest me... I don't like first person games so Metroid didn't interest me. I've never been a big Mario fan and Sunshine is especially lame. The most interesting game I saw for GCN this year was Beach Spikers, which is not exactly a killer app! :p
Maybe next year will be better though. I sure hope so. F-Zero looks pretty cool.

Nintendo's first half of the year:
First of all, they only publish 1 gamecube game in this time, and its a mediocre sports game of all things! They release nothing interesting on the GBA either. Everyone was so hyped for a Nintendo system that actually has games released on it, and then they went and pulled that crap. I'm willing to be the NEO GEO had more interesting releases in that period of time.

Beyond my utterly awful life? Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance.
Better graphics and brighter than Circle of the Moon, but very easy and lacking in items when compared to the game that came before it.
I was not too impressed with Socom. It just got boring after a while and Splinter Cell kicks its ass. There is also the fact that I don't have broadband so that could be my problem.
Not a whole lot of what I played disapointed me. The only stuff that I was interested in that turned out to be something for me to avoid was:
Stuntman: Just not as fun as it could be. Its all just repeat till done. I was hoping for something more.
State of Emergancy: I was not expecting GTA4 like some were, but the game just did not offer enough varity. The game could have been great with some tweaks and additions. The non-mission mode was pretty fun for a while though.
Dead To Rights: Looked amazing like a year and a half ago when it was very early, turned out to be a heap of hot shit that kills off all who comes near it.
Other then those two nothing sticks out in my mind.
Mario Sunshine is great.
JSR:F is great, and better then the shit that is JSR.
Metroid Prime rules the roost like I knew it was going to.
Super Monkey Ball 2 although easier is still great fun.

I'll have to agree with most people that Castlevania HoD was a dissapointment. I had a blast playing it, but the gameplay formula has officially hit the "been there, done that" wall.
That's not really true. I just don't care much for most of Nintendo's main series. Some I think are ok and others I simply don't care for. I do like some Nintendo first party stuff though, like Advance Wars. I don't care much for a lot of what Nintendo makes these days though, but I still like a lot of the classics like Game & Watch, Donkey Kong, etc.Quote:

As for what I like in games, well, I like most things. I am very open minded and I like most things. The only genres I specifically do not enjoy are horror games and FPS. Oh, and 2D fighting games. I like action, adventure, music, platformer, RPG, puzzle, strategy, racing, flying, simulation, and on and on an on. :)
It's not a crime to not be a big fan of Mario (ask Despair.. heh) or Metroid..... Oh I did remember that if I had a Gamecube I think I'd like Animal Crossing a fair bit. So there you go. Wave Race and Wario look semi-interesting too. But none of these are AAA titles for me, my interest is pretty lukewarm.
I found it disappointing that Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance was stripped down to a GBA game, rather than a PS2 one. No knock intended on the GBA itself, but think of what could've been done with it on the PS2.

A lot of Sega shit was VERY shitty and didnt live up to Segas standards. Hell I think VF 4 is boring too. And thats one of the only Sega games I liked this year.

I can't believe how many big releases came out this year that shipped out all buggy as hell. Mario Sunshine and Vice City are the two biggest examples I can think of.

Being balanced, substantial and well made. For example I think Shining Force is a good game, but I'm a crack baby with no attention spane so I'd rather go play Raiden Fighters.
Warcraft 3 was clearly the biggest dissappointment of the year.

Subjective is your opinion. What one may dig, others may not. And such is life.
And while it may not be possible to be entirely objective, one can analyze something to the point where you will see good qualities in something... yet it may not connect with you personally.
There are definitely games I like, that are not "good games". An example would be Sentimental Graffiti 2. The art is the best I've ever seen in a game or otherwise, and the stories (all revolving around tragedy) are very touching. But as a game, the gameplay stinks... and to anyone who is thinking of getting the game, I would recommend "cheating" by using a walkthrough. The gameplay is "be at the right place at the right time". But the game is broken up so specifically into 50 different possible places, at 16 possible times (8am-midnight), everyday for four months. Miss one event and your ending/game is screwed. I still love it, but not for the actual "game".
There are definitely games I do not like, that may be considered "good games". Examples of this are like the Zelda series.. it never did anything for me, but I consider it (at least the first) to be a well-made game. Well-designed dungeons, well-thought out with the puzzles and 2nd quest etc. But I just never liked it as much as others did.
I'm in the same boat. Last year, I bought & was happy with a lot of the launch line-up, but this year I disliked Mario and the horror & FPS titles. (BTW, why are there so many vocal opponents to Mario now? Back in July/August a large % of this board sported "Shine Get" and Mario avatars, while EThugg and I got blasted for our lonely dissenting opinions!) Of the ~6 GCN games I bought, I only kept Mystic Heroes & Capcom vs SNK EO. Hopefully next year will be better. Mario Golf would be a treat, but Camelot has been too quiet after releasing those demo shots.Quote:

I've said it before but I love the Cube hardware and I have been dying to get one... but there is simply no software I want since I don't like the few decent games that came out this year. I don't like survival horror games so Resident Evil and Eternal Darkness don't interest me... I don't like first person games so Metroid didn't interest me. I've never been a big Mario fan and Sunshine is especially lame. The most interesting game I saw for GCN this year was Beach Spikers, which is not exactly a killer app! :p
Maybe next year will be better though. I sure hope so. F-Zero looks pretty cool.

Yes, and neither one's bugs impeded my enjoyment of either game any. The bugs are worth noting, but they don't impact my judgment of the games.Quote:

Well, those are two games/genres I am quite sure I am not interested in. With Metroid it's actually mildly interesting... but I don't think I'd even want a free copy of Resident Evil. :oQuote:

Again, I am sure they're good fun games if that's what you like.. but they're just not for me. So, if you combine the fact that there are not that many good GCN games with the fact that the few that are good don't interest me, I am very disappointed in Gamecube's lineup.
I really hope things get better next year though, because I want to want one. ;)
