Hey Saeki, ya little retard, the only reason the PS brand is succesful is because Nintendo opted for carts instead of CDs for the N64. Otherwise you and Kutaragi would be about as successful as the guys who made the Playdia and Supergrafx.

It's leagues away from the truth. Any gamer over the age of 14 has probably played SNES or Genesis, and even if they didn't, they've played some form of Game Boy. And any gamer under that age has probably had some exposure to Pokemon. Sony may have the best selling console, but it certainly doesn't have the only one.

Generally when companies spew hype there's at least some small basis in reality. This is an embarrasingly obvious lie.

Funny how he's bashing the SNES when the PSX was originally planned as an add-on for it. If it wasn't for the SNES' huge userbase at the time of the project, the PlayStation wouldn't be here today.

I worked retail in 98-99, and even then requests for and trade ins of 16 bit games were few and far between. As I said, it's a bit overstated, but the PS brand has been on the scene in Japan now for over 8 years. There's far more gamers today than there ever were before the Playstation...far, far more. His statement is less far off from reality than a few of the posters of this board. :lol:

It had nothing to do with belitting you, it had to do with the facts.

I was a district manager of 3 Babbages/Software Etc. stores around 98' or so, and we had tons and tons of intrest in 16bit and earlier trade ins.

Hell we even setup one of our stores to exclusively handle trade-ins because the demand was so high.

Just saying that one store (or three in my case) hardly makes an accurate control group. The amount of trade-ins vary by store/state/economic levels/etc.

Just too many variables to use that little information to deduce an answer.

Oh for the love of God...

This is all true. And Sony also has exclusive rights to Soul Calibur 2, they said so themselves.

Oh, and they're not really a software company anyway, let alone a games company. MS aren't a games company either, even if they do software.

SEGA and Nintendo both made games as well as machines. Perhaps that's the key.

They know the industry well enough to beat the crap out of Nintendo two times running... in the meantime they also found time to dispatch Sega and to keep Microsoft from really succeeding like they themselved did in 1995/1996. And this is during a period in which the game industry has exploded, in terms of # of games, the size of the industry, the amount of gamers, the amount of revenue generated, and clout in pop culture. But what it hints at - the fact that Nintendo's reign as the industry leader is over, and that Sony is the successor - may hold some truth. Keep in mind that Sony did something Nintendo never did, and that was hold onto the #1 position for two hardware generations in a row (yes, I know one can say that Nintendo actually did beat Sega in the end, but it was really close. PSX crushed N64 and GC/Xbox have pretty much no chance of outselling PS2).

I mean, Nintendo used to be a ruthless company that gutted whoever came near them. Thats easy enough to see, read old interviews, Next Generation, Game Over, The First Quarter, whatever. They acted that way probably until about 1997. Now theyre a nicenice company that pumps out quality titles but is pretty much just forced to sit quietly and fight for 2nd place. Why? Because of Sony.

Yamauchi also went from being the most respected person in the industry to a senile old laughingstock, but I digress.

The PlayStation succeeded out of complete, blind luck. Nintendo made the mistake of holding out on discs. Sega made the mistake of designing a developer unfriendly console.

In this generation, Sony simply rode its momentum and, to their credit, timed the PS2 release perfectly. They have the worst hardware and the worst 1st and 2nd party developers, but they are winning where it counts.

Round 3 should be interesting.

The PlayStation was great hardware at the time, and Sony signed top developers (like Namco) to the cause. They bought Psygnosis who was on a hot streak at the time. WipeOut was amazing. They released ace games like Jumping Flash!, Warhawk and Twisted Metal. They had a great ad campaign. Sure Tekken and BAT may play like shit but it looked a hell of a lot better than Virtua Fighter. Sony priced the thing just right. It was just a cool system to have. Even the black CD bottoms reeked of polish and chic electronic gear. Sony played to an audience and the audience loved it. Its obvious, the PSX sold like six times better than Saturn did Christmas 1995. Resident Evil came out like three months later and kicked the crap out of everything.

The Saturn was unwieldly, the games looked like shit in the beginning, it was too expensive, it had a measly amount of internal memory and you had to spend a lot to get extra memory. Put side to side the Saturn just did not hold up to PSX (granted after RS and Grandia came out, but by then...). Sega floundered. They didnt release a proper Sonic game. They didnt release a proper Sega Sports game. And so forth.

The N64 came out with a whopping two titles. Both of which were good, but still, it was two. In the beginning, titles were coming out once a month, at $70. Every third party title was pants. Etc.

Sure, the Saturn and N64 may have been big pieces of shit that didnt sell cause they were garbage, but Sony did a lot, a whole shithead of things right and that proves they know videogames at least a little bit. Sure you could say they marketed their way to the top, but thats a moot point - whats a great product if nobody buys it?

Sony is a game-savvy company, obviously. Its not all luck. I mean, 3DO and Atari released new systems even earlier than Sony did but they hardly caught fire, even though they were fighting against Nintendo's cart system and Sega's developer unfriendly console.

That would make Sony's success the product of good planning, aiming in on the competition's weknesses, and reading the market/consumer at the time. Anything but luck.

Not to mention Sony walked in during the Videogame industries weakest moment of the last 10 years. Nintendo drained a year or two long out of the SNES before releasing the N64; plus Sega messed up w/ the 32x and Saturn fiasco's. The result was a power vacuum that Sony stepped into. Hell, even 3D0 was viable at the time.:confused:

Sony's success was pretty easy to predict before the Playstation arrived. A Japanese mega-corporation with a huge worldwide reputation in the electronics industry was developing a highly advanced 3d graphics machine. It's no wonder all the major Japanese developers signed up.

No doubt Nintendo made the cartridge mistake but I think Sony knew they were in a position to take control over the industry. Sega was never a threat in Japan in any era although, ironically, if you read "Revolutionaries at Sony", Kutaragi does say that the success of Virtua Fighter in Japan increased developer interest in the Playstation since the games were polygonal.

Or how about the Saturn's architecture? They knew it would have dual processors that would make it harder to max out, even though it was being developed along-side the PS1? Think before you type.

I think Sony's statement shows that they've lost sight of the insight and planning that got them where they are now. I do not see Sony leading the next generation of consoles if this attiude doesn't change.

Especially because of nintendo's greed to try to get people along the whole 'buy our carts at expensive prices' trick.(both bad for consumers and developers who make huge losses on unsold copies of the games. Along with proper global support instead of only focusing on japan, they deserved to win the 32-64bit system war. In many ways sony expanded the videogames market to more than the niche industry it once was. (I often wonder how long we'd still have the saturn and n64 going on if sony hadn't come in. I'm glad they did)

Sony are fine as a company. They make lots of great stuff and I've spent lots of money on sony products. It's just the ps2 that they made a huge mistake and which I think they don't deserve thier success. They basically rode on the big hype and success of ps1 for automatic victory by playing on the uninformed masses' ignorance and overhyping the abilities of their machine. This to me is why it is so easy to hate sony. I don't have anything against the younger generation of gamers or anything (no need to be mean to them guys, instead: try to encourage and guide them towards the good games. You were once young and ignorant too.)

It doesn't matter which company is currently dominating, the one at the top has the least work to do. You won't see sony catering to the 2d shmup market or whatever if they can just ignore it because of the money made in supporting only 3d stuff exclusively. It's that kind of destructive attitude that threatens to kill off chances of seeing certain things appearing and an example of what I mean when I say that the comapny at the top is not thinking about you. On the other hand, when you look at fanboy faves like nintendo (who can do no wrong because they've got a long history) they tend to ignore the hardcore demand for certain things (rpgs? they blew it with square and any chances of seeing huge epics based on thier greed to use cartridges) that don't appeal to the masses or 'suit thier image'. So they tend to starve thier fans of certain popular genres just to be different.

eg You can see thier past attitude with removal or changing of blood colour for beat em ups and things. This is where sega in the past imo filled up that gap of fans that nintendo were less caring about. And which is why there was this great balance of sega and nintendo which is no longer there today...
..But sega's weakness is poor managment (they make stupid decisions) and treatment of fans through thier abandonment of hardware. So they aren't saints either!

To me if the company can 1.create a decent-performing platform, 2. release or provide access to a great amount of good games (it doesn't matter if they are first party imo the industry is big enough so that third parties can determine the success of a consoles life, more than in the past; where people were more interested in the first party stuff like sonic or mario which were crucial to winning the fans towards the console. other third parties easily being ignored because most couldn't compete with the in-house first parties' stuff due to secret knowledge of the sytem and pricing of the medium.), ..and 3. most importantly stay around for a long enough time for me to care about them (you need stability) then I'm a fan of that company for the console generation. It's not because of fanboy brand loyalty, but me going to where the good games and the best performing system is. The only way to do that now is multiplatform. but it still shits me to see most companies having to release to the lowest common denominator for making the most money. It's changed so that only sony secure the rights to everything and starve the other systems. (just like nes until sega came along)

We won't see a new sega wonerboy, alex kidd or whatever if nobody (future generations) are there to really apreciate them. But they can't apreciate them if they aren't there in the future and if sega can't make money on them based on the imbalance and mindshare problems of today where most don't recognise them, and so they don't profit. Getting people to apreciate the good games and the best system doesn't lie in just making them support a company due to the past glory, (they've all made big mistakes, nobody especially fans likes to talk about the crap games a company has made) but to get them to look at what is actually the best system on the current market to get them to avoid mindless choices. Most people have bought whatever console has the least risk, thinking it's the best for it. In the long term it means less choices in the future and less great games. (held back by limits like the long nes era until megadrive came)

That is a load of :bs: indeed. Saeki's statement reeks of pure cockiness with an "Anyone still using SNES/NES can go fuck theirselves!" attitude.

What Kosh_H said is the truth... the PlayStation could easily have gone Jaguar as well. If they didn't get Namco in on PS1, things could have been rather different.

I do hafta admit that the younger gamers are all about graphics and EXTREME game play, so most don't remember the SNES, or the NES for that matter, or even care. However thanks to emulation, the truely hardcore no matter what their age will always see the SNES as the pinacle of all gaming.

Every generation cares about graphics.

I remember people in the late '80's complaining that the modern games were all about graphics over gameplay, etc.

As for the topic that has sprouted off of this topic, Sony did do a lot of things right with the Playstation. I don't see it at all like dumb luck. It was just a better system than the Saturn. Of course, it didn't help that Sega screwed themselves with retailers at the beginning of the Saturn's run with the limited release that burned retailers and the $400 initial price tag.

Sony came in with a cheaper system (well, only about $30 cheaper if you bought a game + memory card), better games, and a 15 month head start on Nintendo.

Nintendo had the misfortune of either giving the press tidbits of info, or rumor hungry gamers making false statements, that the "Ultra 64" would be a dream machine with graphics that would blow away all the competition. The final console redubbed Nintendo 64 was a big let-down from all that had been said about it before. Not to mention the games were super expensive and few great games existed for it. Mario 64, while a great game in its own right, made me feel like I needed my eyes checked it was so texture blurry.

Then Sony gets another head start on Nintendo, kills the Dreamcast, and now enjoys more success with a system that did everything wrong initially compared to the introduction of the Playstation. About the only things going for the PS2 when it came out was the fact it had a built-in DVD player and could play PS1 games.

As long as Sony continues to get a head start over their main competition with their console releases, nobody will be able to beat them if they keep up at this rate. Throw crap in a box and people will buy it. Much like the PS2 was during its first months.

Well how else are they supposed to play some of these titles? learn japanese? Emulation does offer vindication to itsself, its a means of archiving some of the best games ever created, also it allows us to get games that never made it stateside. But other than that who has $80 for a copy of Terranigma? I'm not saying That emulation doesn't have its pitfalls but it's not all bad.

This is an awful lot of jibber-jabber about some nonsense PR statement. It's not even worth taking seriously IMO. Sony knows damn well how large a % of gamers are older and how many still appreciate the classics. Just look at how well the SNES ports sell on GBA to this very day.

Also, Sega seems to think gamers want to play a bunch of old SMS/Genny/Saturn games eh? ;)

Measly? I played for quite some time with the internal memory before I had to get the memory cart. The same could not be said for my Playstation. That was an extra $15 right out of the gate. Granted, the PSX was still cheaper next to Saturn even with a memory card...

Once you got the memory cart, however, there was no way the PSX could touch the amount of free memory you had on Saturn. I only have about 40 PSX games and already have four memory cards. This generation doesn't PLAY games... they pay a small number of the population to play them, then have them outline, step by step, how to beat them. Then, the Playstation generation reads how to get past 5 minutes of gameplay, does it, then goes back to ruin the game some more.

And, if that wasn't enough, they look for codes as soon as a new game is released, so that they can blow through it with unlimited energy, lives, and all-weapons on, so that they can brag about how quickly they "beat" the game.

The real funny thing is, all these games are WAY easier than anything we used to play through back in the day.

What is up with all this analysis about Sony "predicting" its dominance and "timing the introduction of the PSX at just the right time," ect. ect. Nintendo shafted Sony on the SNES CDROM which gave them motive to make their own system. Even then, Sony still needed a big opening to get third party dominace as at the time, the major 3rd parties didn't have much reason to leave Nintendo (besides the censoring and strong arming of course). But then they got that opening when Nintendo fell into its own trap and foolishly went with carts instead of CDs which threw Square into a tantrum who left them and convinced Enix to leave with them. Then the rest of the third parties followed and that's how Sony won the industry. End of story. I'm not denying Sony was really crafty and quick on the draw when they had the opportunity to strike but it's a lot simpler than what some of you are making it to be.

Sony made gaming mainstream?

Yeah, we should bring back the good old days when gaming was was such a small and unknown hobby. Like when Pac-Man was Time Magazine's Man of the Year or when Nintendo had a console in 1/3 of all homes. Those days when video games weren't mainstream were the best.

As far as round 3 goes, I hope the consoles are all out around the same time so no one system is far superior to the other one. Right now it feels like as if the Snes and Genesis were out but everybody is developing for the NES.

Yea, because, you know, strategy guides didnt exist until 1995. Nintendo Power's first issue was published in 1997, and they only released this mag, chock full of tips and strategies to beat games, as a reactionary move against Sony.

And nothing like GameShark/ProActionReplay/Game Genie ever came out for anything before PlayStation.

All this stuff is post-1995, because nobody EVER needed help or bought guides or "cheated" their way through games before Sony. Damn, Sony sure is evil.

That's right. 16-bit consoles are the Neo, the Genny, and the SNES. The Turbo/PCE was 8-bit...

SNK claimed that the Neo Geo was "24 bit", but that's not really true. It's technically a 16-bit gaming platform. Albeit, one with an 8-bit co-processor and a lot of RAM.

The Neo-Geo was 16-bit. The TG-16 was a souped-up 8-bit system. And I think the Jag was something around -8-bits. That being said, gamers have been looking for codes, cheats, and other goodies for years and years now. The Game Genie and Pro Action Replay were the first big, well-known (PAR, to a lesser extent) cheat devices out there. The internet has allowed gamers to get their info quicker. They don't have to wait for mags to publish codes, they can just go to GameFAQs now and read them. While I'm appalled, as a gamer, to see people ask for, say, Vice City codes on the day it comes out, they spent their $50 on a game, and if they want to ruin it for themselves, that's fine by me. They haven't done jack shit to ruin MY experience with the game, so I'll just let them keep doing what they're doing.

I think some of you are missing the point on Sonys comments. They are trying to say that the average gamer today grew up on the PS? Thats stupid and untrue. If I remember correctly the average gamer is 18-22 or something like that, and thats the age group I fall into as well as my friends. And we all grew up on the NES and SNES, as well as a majority of other games my age.

No one is doubting why PSOne is successful, but to say that the average gamer is the PS Generation is wrong, sure kids the age of 13 and such are like that now just because thats when they got into gaming and the PS was big at that time. But the average gamer is of the 8-Bit 16-Bit years no matter which way you slice it.

And EThugg I just love how you continue to prove your own lies.
