travel

i love traveling. it's always fun to go someplace that isn't like home. sometimes i get bored with the way things are here and i just need a change of scenery. my favorite place to visit is london. i have lots of family there, so i always have a place to stay and the people there are all just great. and there's so much to see and do. hopefully when i'm all rich and famous i'll have enough money to visit asia. i'd like to go to singapore, hong kong and japan. so, now for you guys.

1, Me!

2, My favourite place so far is Iceland.... I don't think anything will top it. It's the most wonderful place in so many ways.

3, Yup. I have been to Europe. Czech, Austria, and Germany so far. I'd love to visit every continent though.

4, There are so many places I want to visit. My next holiday should be to Sweden if things go well. :)

I would also like to visit the Faroe Islands, Norway, Japan, Finland, Switzerland, Estonia, Tierra del Fuego, Madeira, Wales, Russia (Vladivostok, Kamchatka, Lake Baikal, Arkangels'k), Kakazhstan, Greenland, Svalbard, the Azores, Fiji, Hong Kong, Berlin, British Columbia, Denmark, Latvia, China, New Zealand, Morocco, PEI, Newfoundland, Mongolia, Iran, Kenya, the Falkland Islands, India, Nepal, Uraguay... and of course Antarctica.

I could go on (and on). I probably won't ever make it to half of them. But I'd sure like to try to see as many places as possible. ;)

I used to live just south of Alabama, and could go back and forth with ease. I've been as far north as North Carolina, and as far south as Orlando. If I'm ever kidnapped and dropped off in a foreign country I'll probably end up finding a corner to hide in and die :lol:

uhm.... ive gone to Las Vegas. thats about it.

oh, i went to Colorado to visit my dad a couple of times. too bad he lives on in the middle of nowhere.

does that count as overseas? I dont really travel. I went on a cruise to alaska when I was a kid and I was a real brat so my mom says "thats it! no more vacations!" and we havent since... :\

I recommend that you try doing a walking trip sometime. A few summers ago, I took off an entire week to just go walkin'. Took some $$, a backpack, and some good shoes. I walked all the way from Northern New Jersey to the Southern parts spanning 4 days.

Lots of fun- and it builds character, too.

I get to go to Las Vegas every year for my job. It's a blast.

I'm going to Spain after Christmas... it's been about ten years since I last went! (I have relatives over there)

man - that sounds intriguing - although I'm sure walking across Texas would prove to be an untimley hazard - not only due to the rural nature of this land - but also to the fact that landowners here are particularly fiesty with weapons, and police and state troopers are cocksmocks...but please, elaborate on your walking trip.

States I've been to / lived in: Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Arizona, Florida.
Other countries: Mexico (Pto. Vallarta), Canada (Windsor, Toronto).
I guess my favorite place to visit is back home in Detroit... I miss it. Last time I was there was three years ago. My bestfriend came down and spent a week here (Florida), and then we went back up and spent a week there.
Never been overseas.

Personally I recommend that everyone at least take a month out of their life to go backpacking somewhere. I went backpacking for 6 weeks in Germany and Italy with two friends and that was the most fun I ever had. No plans at all... just a bunch of money, 6 weeks worth of time and EuRail passes... soooo much fun.

dude i'd love to go backpack somewhere - but shit...having lots of money is a problem for me. BTW -when you backpacked thru europe did you walk from town to town or city to city - or did you often times take public transportation?

Canada was fun.
Yes. I went to Russia, Sweeden, Denmark and somewhere else.
I'd kinda like to go to Hong Kong.

Nah, the EuRail passes were for taking the trains from town to town. It's not really reasonable to walk from city to city if you want to actually see alot.

It's not that expensive to go backpacking in Europe. You can buy EuRails in NA for a fraction of what they cost in Europe itself. Plus, if you stay in hostels you can have a bed for the night for less than $10u usually.

Also, if you pick cheaper counties you'll obviously save more money. I acted like I was rich in Czech because everytime I saw what something cost and I did the conversion rare and I realised it cost 35¢ I'd splurge! It was great. I bought so much junk. ;)

I stayed in a really nice hotel in Prague for like $30u a night.

So, if you pick your spot you can definitely travel on a budget. Go check out the Lonely Planet books for some tips. :)

It really depends on the place. Some of them can be really great... and some of them can be super super dudgy. Also, some have private rooms and some are dorm style (I don't like the dorm ones, but many people don't mind). It also depends on the country to some extent. Many Scandinavian hostels have a great reputation for example. The one I stayed at in Reykjavík was very nice and I met some cool people, for example.

The best thing to do is to do a bit of research in a travel book before you go. They will usually tell you what to hit and what to miss. :)

If you can't afford backpacking Europe, just do it in America. Not as many hostels, but what the hell.

They're are plenty of hostels in Canada though, including many here in Montréal. I had to stay at one when I first got here. I think it cost $40-50c a night, which is not too bad but you could actually get a tiny Faulty Towers style hotel room for the same price.

I love to travel too - the best feeling in the world.

I've been to Iceland, Czech, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, Scotland, Wales, France, and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Anyone planning any big trips?

Every year I have to travel to downtown Detroit to work. That pretty much takes all the wanderlust out of me. Before those trips, I'd just take off to a new city, just to see what it was like.

I think I would be more excited if it was some place more exotic (cripes, my co-worker gets to go to Ireland, Hawaii, Japan, and Australia).

I don't think their are that many.. but I don't really know. I have never had the desire to investigate, but it seems that most Americans have never even heard of hostels so it's probably pretty unpopular or uncommon.

I did know some friends who travelled to NYC from Toronto and stayed at a hostel though, so I guess there must be a few?

There are many in Canada though. There are a whole bunch here in Montréal and I know people who have stayed at ones in Toronto. I have also seen a book about hostelling in Canada in the travel section of bookstore near my parents house in NJ. Hehe.. :p

Maybe if you stop by your local bookstore you can find some books like that.

Well, if you're sightseeing then it might not be much fun. Just walking around in an unfamiliar place is what I crave, though.

I've always wanted to travel, but never have. I think I'll go after I get some tertiary education (and have paid it off).

I plan on one day going to Canada (U.S.A too while I'm up there). It seems like a really awesome place.

I also would like to backpack through Europe. I have rich relatives in holland that would take me in (even fight over me!).


I really recommend Australia as a travel destination. Accomidation is dirt cheap (almost everything here is cheaper than in America), and we have everything from Great cities to baron desert. Everyone who comes here loves it (ask sevenforce for a testimonial!). I suggest coming around september next year, because we're currently in the worst drought we've had in over 100 years (sometimes dust blows in from the west, creating a brown haze over sydney, which really isn't nice), as well as the hottest spring we've had in a very long time, resulting in big problems with bushfires.

damn! bushes just burst into flames in australia, huh? that sounds like a fun thing to witness.

i have been to paris, london, and all over ireland...cenral america is a lot of fun but i prefer europe

Prague is great, and as mentioned very cheap. In Italy Rome and Florence are well worth visiting for any art fans... Florence especially was really great... but very expensive.

Czech is fantastic ... Prague is so beautiful and full of such interesting history (esp. anything relating to the Velvet Revolution). Italy is kind of boring and cliché. Some of the regions are beautiful but a lot of the big cites are way overrated. Rome, for example, is a hellhole - it's like the ass of Europe. There are so many other wonderful and interesting places to visit that I think should rate way higher than Italy.

Well me too - sightseeing is ok if it happens to come upon the path of your overall journey but its merely a footnote to simply seeing another part of the world in its everyday state of existence. But still - whats there to see in the USA aside from the same old thing - most cities look the same and the interesting ones are too far and few in between. Europe holds more promise for me!

yes. please go to europe. it's the best place ever. if i had to live anywhere outside of the US....europe would be my first choice followed closely by canada.
