Anyone still impressed by any 8 or 16 bit graphics? With all the new technology I wonder if anyone appreciates the graphics of older games. Often I hear them reffered to as dated or only good for the time, but some games look great to the day still.
Some SNES games that still look beautiful:
Final Fantasy 3/6
Chrono Trigger
Donkey Kong Country
Actually alot of the SNES rpg's and action rpgs look great.
Some 8-bit games still look good, like the Jungle Book. Aladdin and the Lion King on the Genesis are still stunning. I love the simple beauty in many of the games on the 16-bit consoles. The sheer amount of colors in some SNES games still makes my jaw drop.
I still think 8 and 16 bit games look better than any 3D game these days.
Yes, absolutely. There are several games from this era that I still look at and marvel at their beauty.

Sonic 1, 2, 3, S&K, Sonic CD, etc
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Most Wonderboy games
Fantasy Zone series
Landstalker
Sonic still look impressive to me
The graphics in '70's games like Asteroids impress me.
I'm still amazed at what Konami pulled off with Castlevaina 3 in terms of graphics, music and length on the NES. I still love the graphics of Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES (especially the ice level).
Link to the Past still looks great to me.
Shooters aside, SMW, SMW2: YI, Super Metroid, DKC series, Sonic, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and Psycho Fox all still look just as good to me now as they did back then. :)
A solid looking will always remain so. That said, the intro to FFVI is still gorgeous, and will most likely always remain so. The walking through the snow part is amazing.
I'd like to add to my earlier comments that I look at games as art. They are living breathing interactive digital art. So, each console is just a different medium. What people do with the medium is create art and what is a masterpiece in 1986 is still a masterpiece in 2002 for me.
I still love to look closely at the simple sprites used in SMS games, for example, and marvel at how such wonderful beautiful things were created with limited numbers of pixels and colours.

I look at the transitional colors used in games like Outrun and stare in amazement. It's astonishing to see what the developers where able to crank out with such limited hardware at their disposal. Their hard work has payed off in spades because now, YEARS later, their work is still be discussed, and even more amazingly, it's still being praised.

I remember playing Mega Man 2 last week and still being impressed with the graphics (minus the slightly jerky background scrolling common in all NES Mega Mans).
Castlevania IV on SNES never ceases to amaze me what the SNES is capable of, both visually and aurally. The prologue music (you know, the gravestone scene) is an absolute masterpiece of SPC programming.

this is true. If a game looks good, it will always look good. You need only sharpen up on whether or not you're praising the relative technical brilliance of the artists, or the art itself. I can love the look in Calvin & Hobbes as easily as I can in a piece that is hyper realistic and took years to make, just as I can love the Downtown Nekketsu look in favor of many modern 2D games with more colors/ animation/characters, etc.Quote:

Many SNES games still look great, but what really impresses me is the music chip. Most of my favorite game soundtracks are from SNES games. That's why it's such a shame that for ported game soundtracks, the GBA can't really do them justice.
I'm still wowed by the intro in the NES Batman game. The cinema scenes used for the story intro in the SNES version of Batman Returns are also fantastic. The NES intro is really amazing though considering it uses sharp graphics, keeps the movement in it smooth, and then has Batman jumping out of the Batmobile to reveal a near-photo realistic Batman next to the game title. Truly a sight to behold. The sheer visual quality in the Batman Returns ones makes them memorable, they are full of detail and really capture the movie well.

Nope not any more, i played my snes for the first time in ages today and played some old time favorites, but it just didn’t have the magic as it did back in the day. but the game play in some old games will allways amaze me.

It depends on what you look for in the graphics. I love for the smaller details in them, micromanagement if you will. As opposed to looking at the big picture and seeing one thing, I break it down and see many things. By doing this, I'm bound to find something that I like about it.
Like some guys have already mentioned, the later SNES RPGs and Yoshi's Island still hold up well. Also, I've always been amazed at the way the Sonic games looked despite the Genny hardware.
I still love the way Secret of Mana, A Link to the Past and the DK Country games look among many others. It is amazing what they could do with pixels and a few frames of animation. Secret of Mana I think is just absolutely beautiful!

The sound chip was pretty amazing and still holds up failrly well. Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, took advantage of the soundchip well and I feel that the game holds up very well. I loved the planet Hoth level, with snow falling and probe droids hovering in. Great stuff!
For the Genesis, it will always be Herzog Zwie for me. The game holds up fairly well, and the techno music is great.
Occasionally. Beyond Oasis, for one. As much as I like the Genesis, what was done with that game is pretty surprising.
On Genesis, I really like the graphics and style in Gunstar Heroes and most of the Sonic games. There's a ton of stuff on SNES that I think still looks great, most notably Yoshi's Island. I really dislike the pre-rendered, claymation style games on the SNES, though. I don't think the graphics on Donkey Kong Country or Killer Instinct have aged well.
Short answer: Yes.
I still like the look of 80s arcade games.
I still like the look of NES games. SMS games. SNES games. Genesis games. PC Engine games. Neo-Geo games. Et cetera.
I can still find and enjoy an old 8-bit or 16-bit game today that I hadn't played before, and come off impressed. For example, I only played Yoshi's Island for the first time last year, and the game absolutely floored me. Even in 2001, it was one of the most impressive 2D games I'd ever seen, not to mention how well-crafted the game itself was. For me, many games of that era are a natural part of my gaming diet, and I enjoy finding new ones.
I'm expecting to get an SMS in the mail today, so I'll finally get to see what the system has to offer, and see it outside of an emulator window for a change.
Creation of Heaven and Earth / Terranigma, Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean where all ahead of thier time graphically and I still think they are nice looking today :)
I think there's a difference between being impressed by technological calibur and being impressed by aesthetic presentation. It's rather like the distinction between good art and technically realistic art. The two may but are not necessarily the same. The PSX Centipede was pretty hideous compared to the original, even if it was a greater technical achievement. Simplicity of form and a good eye for color can often be more pleasing than blazing fast polygons. I was playing Rayman 2 again recently, and although it's a pretty game, it's decidely inferior visually to it's predecessor which was practically a moving painting.
Ditto...I'd also give Art of Fighting 3's animation a nod for smoothest in a 16-bit game(looks like flash interpolation). The game's art, was crappy though. I find that when it comes to 2-D, 16-bit can keep up with most of what we see coming out today (with fewer sprites, of course).Quote:

Plok still impresses me with its crisp, colorful visuals, and of course, MS3 is amazing..
I find the 3D dungeons in Phantasy Star to be impressive. Simple technique they used to simulate 3D, but it was impressive looking on the hardware. Battletoads and Prince of Persia also come to mind.
Far East of Eden: Zero for SNES had Impressive cutscenes as did Yuu Yuu Hakusho, and Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Tokubehuten
Yes. Some 16 bit games that impress me graphically still are:
Alien Syndrome (arcade & X68000)- Very detailed and gruesome boss aliens that splat nicely when killed, good animation, and detailed backgrounds. It is hard to believe that this is an '87 game from just watching it.
Power Drift (runs on Sega arcade hardware with three 68000's)- You've got to see the game in motion. No picture does it justice. For a game with 2D scaling sprites, it sure feels 3D.
Space Harrier (Sega, dual 68000)- The artwork is outstanding and the sprites look good even up close.
MUSHA - Insane amounts of parallax in some stages. The one part where the floor's tiles fall out from below you is a jaw dropper. Great enemy designs.
Streets of Rage 2 - Gives Final Fight CD a run for its money in this department.
Space Megaforce - There's the mode 7 effects (Stage 2 uses them heavily), the "liquified" backgrounds, and the cool way the first boss fades in. The artwork is your usual good Compile stuff.
Axelay - Good artwork coupled with some nice SFX. If it were released as an arcade game at the time, it would not really have looked out of place there.
Pretty much all the Capcom CPS/CPSII games still look great, especially 19XX, Giga Wing, Forgotten Worlds, and Alien vs. Predator. A vs. P has some cinemas that leave your jaw on the floor, and the ingame graphics are no slouch either.
There are too many Neo-Geo games to name here, but I think even NAM-1975 and more than a few earlier titles still look great.
8 bit? No. 16 bit? Yes.
SNES:
Ninja warriors Again - the sprites are nice & big. It is very easy on the eyes & is one of the most visually pleasing SNES games to me.
Hagane - strider with awsome robot ninja character designs.
R•Type 3 - the space station in the first stage is amazing.
Super Ghouls & Ghosts - So few games have as much personality as the G&G series, & this is the visual peak of the series.
Space Mega Force - all the reasons GameOver dude listed.

I just freaking love it.
I have to say that the orriginal Battletoads on the NES is still graphically impressive.

I love Sprite based graphics! I still get blown away from time to time when I see games I have never seen before. 8-Bit and 16-Bit wow me, you just have to take into account the system they are on.

There's tons of games that I think still look good. But one that I have to mention is Strider. There are so many scenes in that game that I look at and think are better than most of what shows up in today's games, 3D or otherwise, in terms of colour and detail.

Anyway, I'm still a big fan of the early Neo Geo games, like Magician Lord and Nam 1975. Even Ninja Combat. The detailed, colorful graphics make those games even funner.. err, more fun.
But this isn't just a Neo thread, so I'll throw in Final Fight and Run 'N Gun for good measure.
I gotta admit, I am still a big fan of the NES Dragon Warrior and Zelda!
