Capcom and Sega sitting in a tree?

Major Merger in Japan
The news has been coming down for some time now. At first just in trickles, and now in large full waves. Several major Japanese publishers are looking to merge. With some of the same thinking that was used to explain Enix and Square's merger, Capcom is definitely in the process of merging with another major Japanese developer/publisher. The other possibilities are Sega, Namco and Konami. Yes, we know it sounds crazy, but the economy in Japan has been in the dumps for some time now, and merging two companies in these rough times is looking very attractive right now to stray strong now and to grow stronger in the future. Past rumors of Sega buying Infogrames were indeed true, and we know now that Sega could possibly be in talks with Capcom about merging in the next couple of weeks. Whatever it is, it's going to be big. Keep your eyes open.

Even if Capcom and Sega merge, I don't see much coming out of it IMHO. I don't see exactly how the talents/properties of the two companies complement each other. Capcom is known for 2D fighting and survival horror games. Sega is known for sports, racers, and arcade style games. So what are we going to get? Street Fighter vs Virtua Fighter? A Sonic survival horror game?

I mean it's not as if it's like Sega and Namco were merging, where there can be some kind of synergy of their talents.

It just sounds more like an act of desperation to keep the companies afloat, more than anything. It might help their bottom line but I'm not sure exactly how this would benefit us gamers.

Capcom makes incredible action titles. Sega makes incredible action titles. Sega has tons of licenses they're sitting on their ass about. Capcom loves sequels. A match made in heaven.

That said, I believe this is a pure financial merger, not game development. Though I could be wrong.

Interesting. IMO the most intriguing combination would be capcom and konami. just imagine what they'd come up with (save for the rehashes)

The sad part is...I don't think you're kidding. Capcom and Sega compliment each other very well.

I just hope Sega doesn't pull Capcom away from Nintendo. Unless...MEGATON!!! ;)

Andy...where does it say a Sega merger is any more likely than the other two? Are you just being open-minded again?

This guy at IGN is pathetic. He jacked that story from the gaming age forums, and even went as far as to name the same four possible companies. The guy from gaming age said that it isn't capcom and sega.

Well, I still want to know what's happending with the Infogrammes deal too.
