For all you techy folks, should I make my extra slot on my PC a DVD drive or a CD-RW drive? I like use both equally, but I only have one slot available (for now).
Help me out, folks. Thank you

If you don't have an external dvd player (eg; standard dvd player/ps2/xbox) I'd say get that. Otherwise, a CD-RW is good.
Will a DVD-RW drive burn CD's as well, so you can have the best of both worlds, or am I wrong in this assumption?
Plasma, if you can afford it, I'd just get a DVD-RW, consolidate both things into one, nifty-ass device. And they're starting to become pretty affordable to. I'm seeing them on sale regularly for around $200-250 here in Dallas alone, decent brands too.
The last time I looked at DVD burner drives, the standards were still in-flux. Is DVD+RW still in play?
I know they have combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives for laptops nowadays. I'm thinking that they should have them for desktops too, but I haven't actually seen one yet. Nor do I know how much they cost if they do exist.
I'll be sending a fat check to Dallas...:D
There are still two standards, the "+" and the "-" drives, although some new ones can read either.
As far as I know, neither standard is superior to the other, but I haven't taken the plunge yet to buy one.
One thing though... copying dvd's is fine and dandy, but if you need to do any video conversions (like you want to burn a Divx movie to a dvd format) you need some SERIOUS power and hard drive space on your pc.
I've got a LG Electronics drive that burns CD-R/RW and reads DVD's. Doesn't burn DVD though, but it was only $100 or so. Pretty cool little combo drive.

get rid of your reg cd-rom drive and get both - ...er..or you could just get the DVD-RW like someone else suggested!
They're still pushing DVD+, and it doesn't look like they'll stop anytime soon.Quote:

Well, the DVD- format is the choice if you're looking for discs that will be compatible with the widest arrays of DVD players out there. That's the format the DVD Consortium officially supports.Quote:

Sony just came out with a DVD writer that reads/writes ALL formats, both - and +. It's under 300, and it has receieved kickass reviews from everywhere I've seen. Get that one if you're going DVDRW.
A good compromise would be a CD-RW/DVD combo drive that will play DVDs/write CDs. You can find those for under 100.
If not, I'd say go for a CD-RW. Here's a link to a new 52X for under 80 bucks.
