Typing Programs

I won't bother with all the background, but essentially, my mother needs to learn how to type at a (at least) rudimentary level. She doesn't want to spend $150 to take a class at the local community college, so, I suggested one of those do-it-yourself programs (like Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, or something). However, I have no idea what a decent program is these days. So, I turn to the forums to see if anyone, by chance (since I assume you all already know how to type) happens to have any useful info.

So, a decent teach typing program, for under $50...?

I've no idea what kind of typing programs are available - you're better off checking the local Comp USA if no one here can help you. Personally I learned to type over time of 7 years of straight computer use - now I rarely have to look at the keys when I type...arggh!!! - except in situations like this where I'm actually thinking about not thinking about typing! :mad:

Heh, but I suppose my way of learning typing was natural but not the "right" way to do it - for instance someone once told me that my wrist posture was all wrong, I told them to piss off!

Well, Mavis Beacon looks to be the standard from what I've checked. And the newest version is only fifteen bucks, so, I think that should do. The way I learned to type was from a class in high school, which got me started, but then, it was just continuous computer use that keeps me fast. I have tons of bad habits, though, chief among them: I tend only to use the left shift key...so, if I want a capital "a", I hold shift down with my pinky and hit "a" with my ring finger. It's really awkward, heh. Old dog and new tricks I suppose...

Yeah, I've heard of Mavis Beacon typing tutors (anyone else think thats the WORST name ever created?! Mavis Beacon?!) - I thought they were done for way back in the old school days but I suppose they're still around eh?

I have my little quirks and eccentricities as well when it comes to typing, but I think that anyone who learned on their own by natural computer use has their own as well.

i put my feet up on the table and type to the side of them. Or i'm eating/reading/whatever and I type with one hand until I get so irratated at how slow I'm typing that I sort of drop whatever and just type two handed angerly. er. :D ...

Heh - at first I thought you said you typed with your feet! :confused:

I learned how to type in high school too, I bought Mario Teaches Typing but it wouldn't run on my computer because I needed to do some annoying Virtual RAM swapping... :(

I really wanna learn how to type fast one-handed like Boris in Goldeneye! ;)

Mavis Beacon is probably the best thing out there. I got it for my parents, and my dad can actually type now. That is quite an accomplishment.

It's also pretty fun if you do know how to type to work on your speed or just clock your typing. I got 70 wpm once, but I average around 55.

mavis beacon is the best. and Key Champ Pro is pretty good too. dont remeber who makes it.
