Ristar, fuckers. Best platformer on a Sega platform to date.
For the record, I can't see what the hell was good about Astal. I mean, it was a 2D platformer in an (early) 3D era, so I wonder if that influences people opinions of it.
Ristar, definitely Ristar. Astal's graphics were great, really great - but that's all the game has going for it.
*Shakes fist*
Skullmonkeys!
Yeah, put Skullmonkeys up there!
Isn't it true that Ristar is included in the Sonic Mega Collection for GC? That's pretty awesome.....
Has anyone ever played Super Tempo for (import) Saturn?
Psst, guess which one I picked ;)
I assume TTA means Buster Busts Loose for SNES? That's what I voted for, anyway.
I don't really like the other games. Astal is pretty, and pretty boring. Bonk is crap. Tempo is even duller, which I didn't think possible. Ristar didn't leave much of an impression on me when I played it in '95. And for the life of me I can't understand Dynamite Headdy worship.
My, aren't I hard to please? :P
BBL is better than Bonk!? That's just crazy talk. BBL is floaty, unresponsive and many things about it just feel kinda weird. It has some really cool levels (like the football game), and the "dash through the whole game" play mechanic is cool, but it ain't no Bonk.
Man. Two posts about mascot platformers in the span of 24 hours. I must be getting soft.
Ristar and that's final. Play with me!
I've never seen the appeal of Bonk. Bonk 1 & 2 looked cool back when they came out, but when I finally got to play them later I found them to be thoroughly bland, uninteresting experiences.
And if BBL's control is floaty, then Bonk games' are slow and laggy. :)
I'm glad I don't like the series or I'd be tempted to shell out big bucks for the two American versions of Bonk 3.
Just for fun, I decided to check out IGN's review of Skullmonkeys, because obviously, if a game is good and features monkeys I want to know about it. Anyway, what I found was utterly hilarious, and felt you all would enjoy reading it as well, because of course we all love laughing at people who aren't as hardcore as us, especially those being paid for it. Without further adieu, the intro of said piece;
February 03, 1998 - There was a time when there were only a few basic types of games made for consoles. You either had shooters, hack and slash (or shoot) action games, sports games, or platform games. Of course, they were all 2D because, well, there was no 3D. And that was fine because you didn't know what you were missing.
Now it's the late 90s (man, time goes fast) and we're squarely ensconced in 3D games. Yeah, I know there are some of you out there who just love 2D games. "Eh, 2D games are better because they focus on gameplay, eh, whine, whine." Whatever. My whole deal is if a game is going to be lazy and be 2D, it better have some pretty damn amazing gameplay.
Skullmonkeys, the new platformer from the same folks who brought you the PC game The Neverhood, is a 2D game. It does do some cool things, particularly with the claymation-style animation made popular in the first game. But does it have that brilliantly amazing gameplay that makes up for the fact that it's 2D? Frankly, no.
Bonk's not laggy, he's just....weighty. The real appeal of Bonk (the original, anyway) is in trying to get through the game touching the ground as little as possible. Every hit in the air increases in score until you're getting free lives, and it's pretty suprising how far you can get.
The game also had pretty astounding bosses for way back when, too.
Yeah. It needs more guns and titties. Oh and XBOX live....U FAGZ!Quote:

Thats almost Gamefaqs quality coming from IGN. I'm not too shocked
Didn't you know, if a game is only 2d then it has to also give blowjobs to be good.
One day a major developer will release a 2d game for a next-gen console and it will do really well....AND THE WHOLE INDUSTRY WILL CRUMBLE!
UltraMan Ball.

these topics are better when they're not polls.
If you find such a game, please let us know. I'll make it a platinum seller. :pQuote:

Bonk is not underrated. Take it out and replace it with Rocket Knight Adventures...
pfft...Super Magnetic Neo is more underrated than them all! So indie it's scary! =p
The thing I have noticed about the Bonk games is that people who played them back when they came out tend to like them and people who played them years later tend to hate them. It's like that for a lot of old games but moreso than average with Bonk.
I'm a big fan of Bonk(mostly the first game) but I don't know if I would call it underrated. The games are pretty well-known despite low popularity of the TG16.
Yeah, it was a magazine-cover-gettin' system seller, but it's hard not to look at that poll and just vote like "what's the best game on that list?"Quote:

I don't know if you're being serious, but I for one would wholeheartedly agree. Super Magnetic Neo was one of the best platformers I've played, period. It's also ridiculously underrated.Quote:

Ristar is great stuff, too, and would get my vote.
About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I actually played through Astal again. My recollections of the game were confirmed: very pretty, great music, but exceedingly simplistic. It got boring very quickly.
Astal gets my vote. I found the simplistic gameplay to be fun, and the graphics are just jaw dropping. The music is beautiful, and the control is great.
Dynamite Headdy - Over rate peice of garbage
Tiny Toon Adventures - SNES or Genesis? Both are average.
Bonk's Adventure - Meh
Super Magnetic Neo: Trash.
Ristar: Better than all these games combined.
Blues Journey is the definition of an underated platformer.
Ah. That's one of the few Neo games that I played in the arcade but never got at home.Quote:

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed by it. It was pretty and funny, but there wasn't alot of substance. ;)Quote:

Also I agree... Skullmonkey's should be up there... but since it isn't I voted for Ristar.
Wha no SNES Plok? eh I'm sure not many people have played it, which is a shame.
Yeah, Plok's pretty cool once you get past its lack-of-Japaneseness. Great music.
Word. I can't believe SNK never made sequel to that. I mean, even if they made it and never released it, and just said stuff in interviews like "yeah, it's finished, but we're not going to release it because we like to do that sometimes", at least we'd know they tried.Quote:

I just picked it up from GameStop for $3. I'll get back to you once my SNES arrives next week.Quote:

This should not be a Poll unless you put every platformer ever made on the list.
Anywho, I agree with Skullmonkeys. Its such pure platforming its insane. Ristar is also great, it chews Sonic to bits.
I voted for Ristar. It does not seem that underrated to me, everyone seems to like it, but it's the best game on the list an I happen to love it! ;)
If Alex Kidd in Miracle World was on there that would have won my vote, since I believe it is the most underrated platformer ever.
Rocket Knight Adventures and Super Magnetic Neo are good nominations as well.
I'm another one who can't vote due to lack of Skullmonkeys. Poor Skullmonkeys, a minor forgotten near-classic.
Put in a world map and memory card support and rerelase it on Dreamcast. It'd still probably sell better than the PSX version. Sad, sad world, I tell you.
James
I'm probobly going to be shot for this, but Ristar was only above average. It was original, but not as fun as Sonic, Rocket Knight Adventures (the true most underrated platforming series of all time), Bonk, etc.
I didn't play my first Bonk game until a couple of years ago, and I loved it.Quote:

Ok, just to go out on a limb here about underrated games.
Doesn't a large group of people giving a game the title of most underrated game of said genre, kind of a contradiction. I know this may seem dumb, and forgive me if what I said is pure idiocy.
I just think that this thread, and most of the others especially when they are in poll form, limiting your choices, are partial to contraversy.
I never was fortunate enough to play Bonk back when the games were new, since neither myself nor anyone I knew had a TG-16/PCE. I finally got to play it around 4-5 years ago and I loved it. Also, I know a few others in similar circumstances and most people tended to quite like the game still. So, I'd say it's aged pretty well. :)Quote:

I think it would be really cool to see a new Bonk GBA game. Is there any chance this could happen?
When is the last time Bonk appeared in a game. I know he shows up in Saturn Bomberman.
BUG!!! on the Saturn, there is even some new rip off game.
Considering the leading vote-getter has garnered approval from a grand total of 16 people, I'd say no.Quote:

As an aside, I thought Super Magnetic Neo and Bug were completely lame. But that's just me.
Hey! My friend worked on Bug. Then he went on to work on FF 9...now he has retired from making games. :)
whos your friend???
Damn did I ever love Bug. Awesome Saturn game that needs yet another sequel.
His name is Thomas Peng...he was one of the programmers who worked on Bug! at Realtime Associates....
This poll sucks.
where's Marvel Land?!
-that's my favorite "sleeper"
opa, maybe the thread title should read:
Most underrated platformer of these six choices?
Or include "other".Quote:

I'm gonna have to go with a three way...
SNES Tiny Toons is just one of the best games ever...fun and challenging, a truly wonderful soundtrack (one of my all-time faves) and amazing visuals.
Astal-say what you will but in its simplicity i found it fun and consider it probably the best hand drawn game ever arguably...perhaps. The thing that really got me was the music though, tear inducing.
Dynamite Headdy-i know it's not well-liked here but hey those effects and graphics really don't get much better on the Genesis and the soundtrack is one of my favorites ever...
I think 'underrated' should apply to what would be considered underrated to US, not the mainstream. That would kill a lot of these names right off the bat...
Underrated to the U.S. public would be all of those games and about 300 other great platformers and the Dreamcast.
underrated platformer --------> Plok :)
*edit*
BTW, thanks for reminding me to go back and play tiny toons (SNES)
I meant, underrated to us, but with emphasis.Quote:

I shoulda used the bold tag ^^
From those on the list, I'd have to go with Ristar. That game rocks hard.
My heart is with Rocket Knight and Marvel Land (which I still cannot find a complete copy of anywhere!). I also enjoyed both Clockwork Knight games immeasurably. Salsa de Pepperouchau!

Might I suggest Burning Rangers? Yuji Naka's other great title, that soo many gamers missed out on. This should be on the list, because it is way under-rated in the gaming public's eye.
I wouldn't consider Burning Ranger a "traditional" platformer. It's more of an action/adventure/exploration-type game.
Glad to see someone else can see the beauty that is Super Tempo. How far did you get, bbobb?
I truly believe that Super Tempo is the best platformer knowbody's ever played (except for me and bbobb). Hunt it down and enjoy :)
I voted Dynamite Headdy. Haven't played Super Tempo sadly. Ristar's a close second though. Actually Ackman's more underrated than either, and Monster World is the most unerrated of all.
If noone talks about it, it's underrated. Okay. Mine's not on the list. It's Do Re Mi Fantasy. Nobody ever talks about that game and I think it's about as good as a platformer can be. The music is to die for.

OK, who's voting on the dead Polls?
you are all going to hell for not mentioning Adventures of Little Ralph :p
Repent now and you may be saved
Pa: Milon is da shiznapz...
Mickey Mania.
Also, Kirby's Adventure. :kirby:
Conkers Bad Fur Day.
I would have voted for castle of Illusion. That game had it all and was solid in every category. I think the Mickey Mouse license kind of turned everyone off though.
Since castle of illusion wasn't on there, I voted Ristar.
I think those games are fairly rated, except Bonk and Dynamite Headdy are overrated.
The Mickey games on Genesis were great, but I think that was common knowledge. How about Vexx for underrated?
A poll can never work for determining the most underrated anything. By definition, anything left off of the poll is more underrated than anything that made the poll.
An oxymoron is this thread. :bang:
I agree. The only thing a thread like this will determine is what the most popular "sleeper hit" of the platform gaming genre is.Quote:
