Game Testing Stories

Anyone else here test? Acclaim finally called me again and I'm going in tomorrow. Dunno what I'm gonna be playing, but they sounded like they were looking for "hardcore" gamers. I'm obviously not gonna say anything tomorrow about what I tested (that's kinda mean, y'know?), but I WILL say stuff about last time...
McGrath Vs. Pasantra. I say "bad framerate" Game's released with bad framerate. I say "no point to tricks in race mode" Nothing changed.
Hopefully they'll listen this time. 'Cause we all know that if they listen to me, their stocks a-gonna shoot on up!

I used to actively seek out betas for various games, usually pc stuff, but after realizing that my contributions were essentially pointless, and I wasn't getting paid for it, I stopped doing so

come to think of it, that's not a job I'd want to be paid for either, unless I was using it as a longterm method of getting myself into a producer type position

I liked game testing, actually. It's one of the few things I miss about my time at WD. WD is a small company, though, so when I talked I was listened to, and there wasn't much of a heirarchy to wade through to get to the top.

No real stories, I'm afraid. The best I can say is that on the final day of testing I put in a 22 hour day.

Anyone looking to hire a freelance tester? I kind of miss it...

I was given an offer to be a tester for a PC RPG about a year ago, but declined. I kind of regret doing so now.

I was at SVGL playing XMen vs. SF one day, and some guy from Acclaim comes up to me and asks me and my friend if we wanna test their new arcade game. So we went the next day to their arcade dev place, out of the 4 people that showed up I was the only one who really knew anything about games. We were testing out that Magic arcade game, they were all like, wow this game is cool...inside I was like uhhh this is kinda boring, but how are you supposed to tell them that. So I just asked them stuff like, uh, how do you control where you teleport and can you block attacks and stuff, but I couldn't really say it sucked. Plus I remember, one of the guys asked them if they were gonna port it to home systems, they said maybe PSX and N64, and my friend was like, "What about Saturn?", and the guy was all "Saturn is dead, man!" (which it wasn't really yet). I swear I was about to punch that fucker in the throat. Oh well, I got $20 out of it and they went out of business eventually, so I get the last laugh.

They just couldn't survive without the Saturn. What a sad little company.

Well, they ask for feedback and what we think should be in there.
...plus, bad framerate is just as hideous as a crash! Bah!

Plus I get a free game! Whee!

framerate is very low on the list of what a tester looks for, it ususally goes, in decending order:

Crash and Standards bugs.
Gameplay and Framerate, etc.
and wayyyyy at the bottom, is suggestions.

I did testing on the GBA classic, Urban Yeti :)
