This Thursday Hajime no Ippo : The Fighting for the Gameboy Advance will be released (NCSX and Videogamedepot will both be stocking it). If you havn't seen movies of the game yet, first slap yourself, then go watch these.

I'm pretty sure it's based on this anime about a young boxer who works to ascend through the ranks. I haven't seen it, just heard about it. Typical sports anime, I suppose, but there was also a Neo Geo game about it some time ago.

I'm just about postive that there is only one boxing game on neo, so I'm guessing thats it.

I've never played it, but screen shorts I've seen don't measure up to Neo Geo standards, that's for sure.
As an aside, a few months ago Taito announced an arcade version of Hajime no Ippo. (From the looks of it, think Battle Heat for the FX). I'll try to find that link once I get a moment.
Hajime no Ippo is a manga series that just recently got an anime series. It has nothing to do with "Ashita no Joe", an older series. They just simply have the boxing theme in common.

Another game in this series came out on the PS2 several months ago under the name Victorious Boxer. Never played it but its looks pretty cool, its not in the same veiw point as this game.
This game does indeed look rather cool, but I don't like the Just gloves deal, looks confusing when doing fast punches and such. It also looks like you can move back and foreward if you look at the left side of the screen there is like a position meter or something. I would really like to pick this up, but I can't afford to right now.
Someone who gets it will have to give us the low down.

Nice! This is one title I am definitely interested in. I think the music in those movies actually sounds very nice.

Should I go with GameChoice? Another thing, bbobb, do you actually work at an import game store? If so, is it in America? Does it have a web site?

Yes, I have heard all about it, but still, there are very few games that I am interested in nowadays. I need SOMETHING to do ^_^.

I'm praying over here that Conspiracy doesn't take their sweet time with Tiny Toons : Defenders of the Universe when Europe is getting it Quarter 1, 2003. I don't think my prayers will be answered though
But it's hardly mundane either. It's not a "been there/done that" thing. Repetiive? Sure? Frustrating? Hell yeah. But it is a unique take onthe genre and the gameplay itself is a blast.Quote:

The repetitiveness was my problem... I just got bored with it. I didn't think it was too hard though... I've played much harder. It was definitely a great ideat. I would have liked some bigger badder bosses though.Quote:

The game's a beaut and it plays pretty good. I've only done about 3 fights but it's already a bunch more fun than Victorious Boxers. One o' youze guys gotta play this and figure out all the menus options and what all the buttons do and all the other stuff I am too lazy/stoopid to figure out myself. All's I know is B punches and R+B lets ya do super punches. No freakin' clue what A does. Looks like there's a bunch of game modes, and it would be very nice if Vs. Mode supports one cart multiplayer, but I doubt it does. I am thinking this must be added to zee Christmas List.
A is "dodge." Pressing it normally makes you dodge backwards, and left and right when you press the obvious direction. Up+B is uppercut, the sides are hooks, and down+B is a gut punch. I think you can only do Spirit Punches after a combo, but I'm not sure.
Now onto my second fight. I'll figure out the other menu selections later (the bottom one is options, which will also let you remap controls). Oh, and the boxing gloves thing works wonders with such a small screen, much better then having a whole person there like Punchout. Rummy's right, it is more fun then VB, good stuff.
[edit] Doesn't have to be a combo to launch a Spirit Punch, I've now done it without one. Though it does seem easier to pull them off once even a single hit has landed. The second option down from Story Mode is Tournament Mode, where you can just play through against the boxers using anyone you've beaten in Story Mode.
I also just noticed that if you pause the game they have a command list of combos and different moves for each character. In between rounds, you can use points (I don't know how you get points) to use one of three selections: Regain Stamina, Get Spirit, and Stamina Extend. Each can only be used a limited number of times (the number on the right) and when it's gone that's all you get for the match.
Yeah, that was bidget limiations I think. It was a very small ROM sizem so there was a ton of pallette swapped/scaled crap and none of the big bosses Treasureis know for. I think with more room to work with the game could have been alot better.Quote:

Thanks for the help, Mech Deus. This game is tops. Tried messing with Customize Mode, but I wasn't able to do much. Think I need to unlock more points in the other modes. Accidentally erased my save data just now - Kids! Don't say Yes to that second to last choice on the option screen.
Snap. I am so digging this game.
Normally, forward and back move you through the ring, the meter on the left is what tells you how far away you far and where you are in the ring. In the bottom left corner, I believe that gives a more exact range, which helps tell if you're close enough for a Spirit Punch (Cross is up close and personal, Medium and Long are farther back). Also, I believe up+forward is dodge forward, although it might be dodge back, hard to tell from the animation.
This game is fun as hell. And a customize mode, you say? Ooo... I love those!
Hmm... this is really, really wierd. I got up to Date when I finally lost a match, and it seems to have started me over back at training. The odd thing is that training is now ten times harder then anyone I've fought yet! I'd just wait until I got to the next guy to see if this is a continue "pass" or actually starting over, but I can't beat it! Freaking wierd...
Well, looks like it wasn't the beginning, but I guess you need a perfect run to... well, whatever happens next, as I got someone who wasn't Date after that training bit, and then a Congratulations pic. Hmm... time to experiment with Customize...
Been playing this game, and next time a Treasure game comes out, I'm hoping you smack some sense into me. I don't know why I always get so skeptical. The game is a blast. It's arcadey, and yet not derivitive of Punch Out. The AI is solid, the graphics are great, tons of options and modes. Fantastic. I can tell this is a gmae I'm gonna need to spend some time with to perfect.
In the training mode, set the AI to hard, and both players to CPU. Now think "Damn, how do I do that?"
I haven't figured out how to do the differentspecial moves when I want. Any insights?
frog: try pressing B + R + up/down/left/right. there should be at least 2 different spirit punches to do, depending on which direction you press.

I know this game ain't coming to the U.S.
Himeya has it for $55. People around here give this site entirely too much crap because they charge a whopping $2 more than VGD (literally) and call it "rip off pricing". They have good stock, good service, and the cheapest international shipping I've ever seen ($5 from japan to anywhere in the world). I've had nothing but positive experience with them.Quote:

Probably as long as a good fighting game. It's got alot of options and modes and such, and I think there's like 3 stories in the story mode. The game itself seems to have enough meat to take a little time to master. I think it'll remain a game I pick up and play on my GBA for a long time, honestly.Quote:

I found Victorious Boxers awkward, but it may just be that I didn't give it enough time. I just couldn't adjust to the whole 3d boxing thing. In my opinion Hajime No Ippo demolishes it, but you can get a copy of VB for half the price...Quote:

I just beat the game. Date is a bitch. got to check out the credits. Good mix of new and old. Mostly Bangai-O staff, but the director is a newcomer who goes by PAT-RASH. New support artist too. Treasure has gained like 12 employees in 10 years, so it's kinda of intrest.
Honestly, VB and HNI are really nothing alike. VB is 3D and the controls work though Ippo's direction independent of the camera (much in the same way RE's controls do), where there is no seperate dodge button and you instead tap a direction to dodge that way. It's much more difficult to get a hold of then HNI is, but is great on its own level. I'd say HNI is way more fun, though.Quote:
