What do you prefer? MP3 players or MDs?

I'm an MP3 player guy. I have two myself (a tiny Samsung 64MB Yepp and a 128MB Creative NuVo). The size, effiency and transfer rate cannot be beat. I contemplated purchasing an MD a few months back, but purchasing media and the transfer time turns me off. I know there are MDs out there with reasonably quick transer speeds, but MP3 players just seem more versatile to me.

Anyways, what do you guys have? Also, to the MD owners give me suggestions on some very good MDs that may pique my interest. I'm a music fiend and I have cash to blow, as well. :p

They're both quite quite quite silly when you can buy a CD3 player which plays CD3 that hold nearly 200mb worth of mp3s on discs that cost less than 50¢ each...

Especially since they also play music CD3s (which can be used in any non-slot loading CD player) and you can use the data mp3 CDs in any computer - as well as your CD3 player. :)

ps. If anyone is worrying about the CDs skipping. It's impossible to make them skip even with the protection turned off. Impossible. Can't happen even when shaken vigerously.

Yeah but those are larger than MP3 or MD players. I prefer smaller gadgetry that can easily be held onto my belt buckle. Thing is, I'm also an aggressive inline skater, so CD players (or anything in relation) are out of the question for me. :p

Call me old fashioned, but I use plain ass CD-R's with Easy CD...

Erm..... I don't think you looked closely enough. It uses CD3s (aka mini CDs or 8CM CDs) which are roughly the same size as - or smaller than MiniDiscs. If you can use a MD player a CD3 players are no bigger. :confused:

My CD3 player can fit on any belt buckle or in any pocket with no problems.




Also, like I said. It's literally impossible to make it skip. The media is small so even tho there are moving parts it does not wobble...... even when you try to make it skip. :)

I dunno, the mp3 player like the MuVo just seems easier to use to me. No burning CD-ROMs, none of that crap. Just plug it into your FireWire/USB port and you're ready to go. And I mean they're getting very cheap (how cheap is that player sggg?), and most of them have expandable slots, and that extra memory is very cheap.

I bought my Philips player (linked above) for $99 from Amazon.com last winter. :)

As for the mp3 players... the only advantage they have is that some of them are truly microscopic. If you want something >tiny< then that's the way to go.. but as far as I am concerned the CD3 player is the perfect size. As long as it fits in a pocket it's small enough for me.

Also, like I said the great advantage is the cheap media. CD3s are dirt cheap so you can burn as many as you want. You can put a band's entire catalogue on one CD and not worry about it. You don't have to be stuck with 64/128MB and have to upload/download from your PC all the time... Plus, most solid state media types mp3 players run are freaking expensive. CD3s are less than a dollar usually (depending on how many you buy) and they hold so much more music.

No problem. :) CD3s are not that well known - especially in NA - so it's not that surprising.

Many European and Japanese CDs are released in the format though, so another advantage is that if you happen to like that music (like I do) you can listen to those "regular music" CD3s as well.

Strictly uncompressed for me. MP3's sound compleatly unacceptable, and mini disks sound alright but not perfect. Right now I buy my CD's in stores or copy directly from a friend to CDR. I'm looking to buy an Apple Ipod. The size of an MP3 player, 20 gig harddrive, and I hear it can store and play back uncompressed .wav files.

i like the cd players that play mp3s but the apple ipod is pretty dam nice, now i just need $400.

I really dont like burning CDs, but I have no other means of playing mp3 on the go.

However...that all will soon change when I get my Ipod this Christmas...YAY!!!!

Heh, I still buy music CDs regardless of MP3s, as well.

My current music player, an mp3 puppy, is about half the size of a MD player and internally holds enough music for me to hear walking to and from work without repeats (more if I decrease the bitrate). Plus I got mine for about $30.

If I used burnable CDs, my amount of mix CDs would be insane.

What's the cheapest mp3 player I can get? I need a way to play just one or two songs without having to burn a CD or carry around a relatively large CD player. Every time I look to buy one, a bunch of expensive crap that I would never use is all that I see.

I'm thinking about getting an iPod but it's WAY too expensive for me right now. I currently use a MP3-CD player by Memorex. It has its drawbacks but it serves its purpose of playing MP3's... the CD3 sounds nice but I want to be able to toss MP3's into an MP3 player without needing to burn CD after CD... which is one reason why I'm not using my current MP3-CD player more than I should be...

ive got a TDK Mojo CD-MP3 player. its very nice, but i think i paid too much for it.

still, nothing beats those iPods.... *drool*

Well, you can also use mini CDRWs and you can make them using UDF style burning. For those that don't know, that means you can simply drag and drop the files to the CD within Windows. :)


As for the iPod and other hard drive based players, I personally feel that it's overkill. I can fit over 70 songs on one mini CD and that's more than enough to have at one time on a tiny disc. I enjoy making mixes too, and it's hard enough trying to organise that many songs to begin with. Any more than that at one time would drive me crazy. That's just me though. ;)

I have a Rio Volt CD MP3 player, and i dont mind burning cds, so its just dandy for moi. I mainly use it at work too, so battery life isnt a concern (it came with a power outlet adapter thingy). I just plop the cd in in the morning and press play, then turn it off when i go home. I can even leave the cd in the player and come back then next day, having not even come close to finishing the cd. Its awesome. My brother on the other hand is looking for something small and easy to use. But I cant point him to anything around here, as Canada sucks for electronics stores. We have Futureshop and more recently Best Buy and thats IT.

Overkill? I'll use those 20 gigs up. An uncompressed song takes about 10 megs for every minute of music (650 megs / 72 min). Again, I'm not interested in any kind of compression at all. I'm going to need all the storage space I can get.

Are you sure the iPod can even play .wav's?

stay away from Rio CD players, mine, along with many others, have been stricken dead by 4 foot drops

I've been seriously looking into getting one of these for my car. I can't stand changing CD's all the time in my single disc player, and changers don't make much sense since they can only hold like 6 discs. I could put my whole CD library on this sucker and just set it to random.

Just checked the specs... iPod can play .wav's. I really want one, but $500 is a lot. I guess I could get the 10 gig for $400. Gah. Archos sells their tiny 20 gig harddisk player with a built in color LCD for mpeg4 viewing and TV output for only $350. It would be perfect....if it played .wav's. :(

:eek: I want an iPod, but nowhere near those prices. Not unless I have the cash to burn and auction off a couple Steel Battalions to make up the price or come upon an insanely large inheritance.
