It seems the much maligned Altered Beast: Guardian of the Realms for GBA did not turn out nearly as bad as many people predicted.

I am not a big Altered Beast fan to be honest, but it sounds like this game turned out fairly well. Maybe people will learn to actually play a finished game before declaring it such a travesty. Sheesh.
Wow, that's certainly good to know. I hope this trend continues for the THQ ports.
I'm still skeptical, but my disappointment in this game was not unfounded. I read a preview ALSO FROM IGN, that said the game was too long, etc... either way, I'll be keeping an eye out...

By IGN standards, 7.5 is pretty frigging bad.

If you saw the original screenshots you might understand. *shiver* That and Shinobi GBA looked absolutely hideous, and AB was an undescernable pixelly mess. The screenshots on IGN looked considerably better then what was handed out before.
Well, after the bang up job they did porting the PS trilogy, I wouldn't discount the possibility the Altered Beaast GBA remake wouldn't be half bad. May have to look into picking it up down the road :)

Too many good GBA games still need to bother with this, though I'm interested in how it turned out.
I still don't care for it that much and would rather have a console one from Sega... but that'll never happen :( I will still get it though only if for the werewolf ;)
The game from the movies I saw doesn't look that great, the original one IMO looks better :(

That was precicely my point when everyone had been talking about what a horrible game it was - even before it came out. Yes, the original screenshots looked poor, but they came out a long time ago. People should always wait to actually play or see the final product before they say definitively that the game is horrible (or anything else). That's "opa-opa" territory there and it drove me crazy. Obviously not everyone did it - but there were many.Quote:

I think it's nice to see Sega and THQ vindicated because so many people unfairly criticised these unfinished games for so long. Now Monkey Ball has turned out great and AB seems pretty decent too. Happy days. :)
Monkey Ball's great? Have you played it?
It's a cool tech demo, but the fun is DOA. It's a classic case of a developer doing something only because they could.
I own it. Once you get the hang of switching speeds with A and B, it's a pretty faithful recreation. I like it alot. It's fun, challenging, and totally playable. An excelelnt adaptation. If you spend some more time getting used to the controls I bet you'd like it too.Quote:

As for Altered Beast, IGN don't know what they're talking about. I've played the game it sucks. It doesn't suck nearly as bad as Revenge of Shinobi, and it's not untrue to the source material, but it is much worse that the original, the level up orbs are spaced too far out, and the way you get them sucks, the action is stiff, and most of all the bosses suck alot. Take a mediocre game, downgrade it several notches, and transport it 15 years into the future. That's what you have here. A sub-par adaptation of a sub-par game.
We can just agree to disagree, then. It's no RoS, but IMO it's not much fun either.

I would just like to say that Frogacuda has the best manners of anyone I've ever seen on a message board. Some how he refrains from throwing mud at people while simultaneously containing any general anger he holds deep inside himself.

How the hell did they manage to make this game even worse than the original? I haven't played something this bad in ages. 10 minutes before you turn into an altered beast...bah! The first boss is neat, though. Fear the wheelchair-bound centurion skeleton!
this games is garbage...even a 7.5 from ign is too high...the levels are way to drawn out for an arcade feel...WAY too much time is spend in human form...and what is with the attempt at an in depth storyline? man i thought they would have given that up after revenge of shinobi gba's pitiful attempt...

I really don't like what the game looks like from the movies at IGN. It looks like a European designed game, largely from the way the enemies are drawn and move. Still, it looks much better than I thought it would.

I know you want to love it with all of your being because it has some sort of tenous connection to SEGA, but SEGA didn't make the game. THQ didn't make the game either. It was made by 3d6 games. Go check out their website, and the toher games they've made (Madden for GBC!) and you'll see why everyone was saying the game was going to be shit.
Also, don't jump on people for bashing a game that hasn't come out yet and then turn around and praise a game that you haven't played yet.

I just pointed this out because people have been bashing an unfinished game for months and months saying it was so bad - and I kept saying that it was not even complete yet and it might turn out "ok" even though it didn't look too good in the first screens. Based on this review it seems to me that the game is at least an "ok" game.
It was unfair and this end result shows why.
I am well aware of who developed it and that Dimps made Sonic and that ^Carat House^ made Puyo Pop and Realism made Super Monkey Ball Jr and so on. THQ is publishing the games and working with Sega to find developers for these projects. So far it seems like they've done a pretty good job with the quality control and overseeing these projects. Out of all Sega's GBA games there have only been 2 so-so games (this one and Shinobi).Quote:

I don't agree. People should not bash games that have not come out yet. I think it's safe to say that if you read some reviews of a game you can at least tell if it is half-decent.. and that's all I am reporting. I am not saying or pretending that I played it. I am reporting that other people said the game was pretty good. It's sort of like how I don't think I'd be going out on a limb saying Metroid Prime was a good game even though I have not played it myself - because I have heard such good things..Quote:

I think you can judge a game to a certain degree before playing it. It was pretty obvious to me after watching videos of GBA Revenge of Shinobi that the game looked like crap. I can't say for sure that it's crap since I haven't played it yet but the odds are vastly against it being any good based on viewing it.
Maybe I am not making my point well enough. There is nothing at all wrong with judging how a game is coming along. :)Quote:

The thing I objected to were the multitude of declarations that the game was irretrivably bad and had no chance of turning out OK. Quite a few people acted like it was fact, before the game even came out. They went too far. That's what I objected too because it annoyed me quite a bit.
Oh well. It's not terribly important anyway.
