This weekend my friend brought over Chrono Trigger, and as I watched it, I had the urge to bust out a good oldschool RPG myself. I started Final Fantasy V today, the PS version, and am loving it. I just got out of the ship graveyard. Also I noticed that there is Final Fantasy Chronicles with Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger on it. Should I purchase it?(I think I already know the answer but just want to be sure)
If you don't mind loading times, then yes, get it.
Are the loading times insane or just somewhat of small problem?
I wouldn't recommend it. Try to find the SNES versions if at all possible. No loading times, and heck I'd rather play them on the SNES anyday. CT has some anime movies but you can find those online. If you've played the Easy US version of FFIV on the SNES (as FF2) then download a copy of the translated Hard Japanese version.
DarkCrow, the loading times aren't bad, they're just excessive since they occur on EVERYTHING.
If I can find Chrono Trigger for the SNES then I'll pick that up instead.
Hehe, it seems like the whole board is in an RPG mood right now :) Anyway, I am as well, and I recently got FF Anthologies and Chronicles for that reason too. I'm playing through and loving FF4 right now, and don't worry about loading times with FF4, there's absolutely no loading problems with it, except saving the game. Saving the game takes about 30 seconds or so, but from there on it runs just as smooth as the SNES version. As for Chrono Trigger, I'm going to jump into that next, so I can't comment on it yet, but I've seen movies of it and it looked like it waited a second or two to load before the fights engaged, but that's about it. CT comes with some really nice extras too, like a full in-game beastiary, full in-game OST, full in-game breakdown of how to get each ending and saving the endings you've gotten (!). It's practically like they gave you in in-game FAQ :)
The SNES Chrono Trigger isn't too rare, so it shouldn't be too hard to find, it's just quite expensive.
Getting FF4 and CT in the Chronicles set for the price of CT on SNES alone is so much more worth it :p The additions in CT are really great too, the OST alone is like $10 seperate. FF4 also has the added developer's room and a COMPLETELY reworked script, the latter of which makes it better than the SNES version automatically. The developer room is nothing unbelievable, but it's certainly a nice addition :)
I would recommend just getting Chronicles. FF4 is pretty much perfect and even better than the SNES version. CT has loading times, but they're not too bad, and they added all that other stuff.
