Stupid gaming gifts

If people that know you know that you're into gaming, and they're not, you're certain to get the occasional birthday/christmas/whatever gift that just plain sucks. "Oh, this is videogame related, he'll love it" as if everything videogame related is cool. You know the type- strategy guides for games you don't own, copies of Punky Skunk, and so on.

I've gotten some stupid-ass shit, mostly from family members, who are clueless when it comes to games. One of the worst being A HUGE Lara Croft in a wetsuit statue for my birthday. We all get crap presents from time to time, and we usually act like we like them, but this was so retarded that I just couldn't play that. The person could see that I hated it, and presented me with the receipt right away. Imangine opening this present in front of a bunch of relatives and having to not only show them it, but explain what the fuck it is! And I don't even LIKE Tomb Raider! Where did they get the idea that I would want that?

Another time I got a copy of "Super NES Game Secrets". Too bad that that out of the 50 or so games in the book I only owned one of them (Cybernator). And I don't even USE tip books...and of course, there's more, but I'll leave it at this for now.


Well, I'm sure these people mean well. I mean, they know you like games and they get you game-related stuff, which is nice and all...but I wish they'd just stick to my damn list. I mean, that's what it's there for, right?

Anyone else get some screwy gifts?

i got a virtua fighter post card from a friend. she was all like "i know you like video game stuff so i thought you'd like this post card". well, i didn't.

That suck, but if you don't like the Lara statue you can always mail it to me :rolleyes:

I remember one Christmas I receive some shitty gifts, a Start Wars game for my Game Gear, I fucking hate Star Wars, every person in my family knows that so why in hell the give the that piece of crap?!

People used to give me British gaming mags like Sega Power for my birthday. I don't buy fanboy mags like that myself(half the mag is Nintendo-bashing) but they were still entertaining because they used limey-slang like "piggin'" to describe games.

I remember getting fucking Space Ace for the SNES as a birthday gift from a relative. I never mentioned that I liked the series or anything, but since the game was $20, which I could tell since they left the price tag on, I figured out why they got it for me.

I have convinced my wife to give me Two Towers for Xbox on Three Kings Day (the gift-exchanging holiday in PR). She's giving me a watch for Christmas as well, so it's all good. :)

I've only been given gaming gifts a few times in the past. They were surprisingly well-chosen...I didn't complain about receiving Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or Thunder Force IV as presents. :)

It wasn't Christmas, but try getting a book entitled, "How To Be The Best At Videogames" from your part-time boss. He says, "I know you like videogames, so I figured you'd want it". I smiled and accepted it.

Odd Part about it - the book covered Atari 2600 games. The year was 1995. :)

This is me as well. The only game I've ever recieved from my parents was Super Mario Brothers 3, and I asked for that.

My dad asked me what games I wanted for christmas, I wrote them down on a peice of paper:

- One
- Oddworld


Instead of getting me the game "One", he thought I only wanted one game, so he just got Oddworld.

I was very dissapointed.

To this day he still brings that story up, and laughs and laughs. I wish he would just not bring up such a crappy memory.


Also, I remember asking for "Rescue Rangers" for the NES, but I got "Rocket Ranger" instead. If you're one of the few people out there that had the misfortune of ever playing this pile, you can imagine how devistated I was.

Lol, whenever my mom brought me a game, I'd give her a mini-cut picture of it from the sales paper, with clear instructions on what to do when she gets it. I've also told the rest of my family, "if you think of buying me games, just give me the money instead". that saved me a lot of headache, I believe, especially from reading your story, Regus :D

I've had the opposite happen. My aunt had no idea that I loved Street Fighter 2 so much. So for X-mas, she gave me this long Sears clothing box. Before the big day, I snuck a peak and I found... clothes. Shit. X-mas comes and and I open it up to find a sweater and SF2! I fucking shit myself. Unfortunately, I didn't get to play it cuz I had to go to church.

The next X-mas that same aunt got me JJ& Jeff and my clueless god-mother (videogame wise) got me Soldier Blade. Holy shit!

Well, it wasn't game-related (the only game-related gifts I ever got were from my parents and my brother, who always got me EXACTLY what I asked for.) But when I was like 8 or so, a cousin of mine bought me a combined Christmas/B-Day gift (my B-Day is 3 days after Christmas). It was a Hawaiian shirt...which was ugly as fuck...and didn't even fit me so I gave it away to someone else. To this day I still kind of hold that against her :sweat:

I remember as a really little kid getting NES games for Christmas and not caring what they were. Mad Max? Awesome!

I try to tell people that if they want to get me something gamerelated... just get me a gift card to any place that sells games. That makes me happy. Someone in my gf's family gave me a 25 dollar EB gift card-it went to GTA3, and there was much rejoicing.

My girlfriend has gotten me a few related things, most of it is really cool (I got Soul Calibur and Shenmue for xmas last year, and a SFA wallscroll) but she doesn't hit the mark 100% of the time, usually with accessories.

My GF's brother got us some Casper: Haunted Whatever game, for the PSX. We didn't even break the shrinkwrap when we traded it in at Babbages.

When I was little my mum's family was very good to me. They knew that the only thing I really wanted was videogames... so - I almost always made out with 3-4 games from them on Xmas... but undoubtedly they would be lousy games (I can't remember any in particular). So, every year on Boxing Day it was off to the game store I went to exchange them for the games I actually had on my freakin' Xmas list. No-one minded though. They usually gave me the receipt on Xmas too. Hehe. :)

My mom used to ask me what I wanted, and so she always knew what games to get me. She understood that, which always brought me great joy every Christmas. Sure, I always knew what I was getting, but it was always something I really wanted and couldn't afford myself.

And then came the time my grandparents were going to get me Myst, but she talked them into Doom 2. Not only was I happy enough to start bouncing off walls, but I had beaten Myst a couple weeks prior at a friends house, so it would've been doubly-horrible to recieve that. Thank the Gods I've got her as my mom.

My parents have always done a good job as well. In fact, I am 26 and they still do! To this day my parents and my sister realise the only damn thing I want for my birthday and Xmas is videogames so they ask me what I want, errr, or I tell them... and thus I usually get good stuff. Last year my parents got me Advance Wars and Golden Sun and my sister got me Klonoa - all for GBA. :)

I mean, I have a brother-in-law I'm visiting in California this Christmas and I bought him a Gamecube, Wavebird, Mem Card 251, Resident Evil and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Even if he's lukewarm to those games, that's a hella haul for Christmas if you ask me. He's *just* my brother-in-law.:p

My Mom has always asked what I want, and then I write down the title and which system it is on for her. When I was a kid, I was really into gaming, but didn't know anything about new releases and such. My mom was the one who bought me all my NES and SNES games and I like em all (she got me Rescue Rangers).


These days, for my birthday I just get some money to go spend at any store I want. Christmas I know what I am exactly going to get (with a couple suprises here and there). I don't mind if I know I'm going to get them..the most exciting part is knowing that I WILL be getting them.

but for stupid gaming gifts..my friends always get crappy 3rd party controllers.

Actually for this christmas I just ordered some games online (Hajime No Ippo : The Fighting is one of em)..they then get to my house while I'm at school and my mom wraps em up.

I got both Rolling Thunder and Star Soldier (NES) as random gifts from relatives. These days I just point my parents to NCSX.com with a detailed list around the holidays.

I've had good results, as I always give detailed descriptions/directions/whatnot of the game(s) that I want. The only sub-par gift I've recieved would be SWAT 2.

And for this year's Christmas... I sat down at my dad's G4, browsed YesAsia for Beatmania IIDX 5th Style and the controller, then went to NCSX for ICO. (Bbob: I didn't see the import ICO at VGD) After saving URLs for each, I placed them into a folder on the desktop, opened up Photoshop, and made a huge image of red arrows pointing to a point on the screen. After setting that as the desktop background, I moved the folder to the area where all the arrows were pointing.

So, yeah, I think I might get what I asked for.

Hmm this thread brings back too many bad memories... My stepmom seems to go to the local game store and ask the workers "whats hot" and gets me that... If i get DBZ:budokai for christmas i'm gonna cry.

my dad however gave up on getting me games a few years ago, now he just gets me wierd tech-toys. :D
