So what do you guys think of the videogame section in their mag? I like how they cover imports and feature articles about current trends in Japan.
Too bad there isnt more of it?
Anyone like it? or dislike it?

I enjoy it a lot. The magazine is very good overall and the game coverage is pretty accurate yet they don't try to come off as a gaming magazine. I like that. One of the few mags that can cover multiple areas without compromising any of them.
I thought it was quite humorous that their article about the Xbox's launch games had the reviewer going on about how he just didn't need his PS2 anymore now that the Xbox was here. I wonder if MS bribed the guy to say something that stupid or if he's just that much of a moron.
Some of their import reviews are nice, but I haven't read the mag in a while so I don't know how it is now. Sometimes they give good games like SF3, Strider 2, and Gunbird 2 scores less than what I'd give them, though.
I honestly think Animerica is a really lame publication, chock full of horrible errors....I can usually count about 5 of all sorts in each issue.
The gaming section is so-so, but i think a magazine based on japanese culture and whatnot should have a better informed writers than they do now...
There's an America magazine? And it covers Japanese import videogames? Well, that's a bit ironic..
Me and Chris (Kohler, one of the game reviewers over there) used to be soldiers in the fanzine war together, so I have known and respected him ever since those days. I haven't read his stuff lately, but he's a good guy.
The problem with their game reviews is if they still have that Dr. Brown guy over there. He's an absolute idiot, a horrible writer, and would review games that had NO place in the magazine. Back when I was talking to them about maybe running their game section (this was many years ago), one of the reasons I didn't try harder for the job was that they said they only wanted reviews of games that made sense being in an anime mag, and a lot of those would have been import titles. Obviously, by the time Dr. Brown came along, they didn't much give a crap about the quality of the section.
But, it isn't a surprise - while I do respect some parts of that mag, it is amazing how the magazine has been around for so long yet is so damn ammateurish in so many regards. Amazing how shameful Newtype USA makes them look.
Perhaps some real competition will be good for Animerica.Quote:

Thank you. Not to be condescending, but those who really don't know about anime are the ones reading Animerica. Those who do, know that the magazine and its writers are absolute trash. Honestly, I think the only reason why people bothered was because it was more or less the only magazine out there. It's seriously the "GamePro" of anime for all these reasons: Glaring errors, pro-Viz bias (it's Viz owned after all), poor writing. I haven't seen US Newtype, but I do hope it kills Animerica.Quote:

What are some good Anime magazines then? I'm not into Anime as much as I would like to be, but this was one of the ones that I noticed, and was at a store I frequent.
Yeah, I'm not surprised. Animerica is basically the only anime magazine that's popular. Newtype USA just recently came out, and it's supposed to be a mix of US-relevant content and Jp Newtype content, but because it's very new, and more expensive, I don't expect people to see it on stands much. Issue #2 just came out, I believe.Quote:

My opinion on anime magazines is the same as mine on gaming magazines. If you're into the hobby, and are on the net, by the time the magazine comes out, all the information is old news. So getting publications would only be for pictures. I'd sometimes buy a Famitsu issue or something for the pictures and such, but since I'm not really an anime fan anymore, I don't normally buy import anime mags for their pics.
For your purposes, though, while I have yet to see an issue, I'd place my bets on Newtype USA. The import Newtype is a pretty good source, and if the domestic one gives you some of those articles, as well as some things relevant to the US market, it could be an incredible resource.
Want a *good* anime magazine? Go to Kinokunia and buy the one that looks like it makes the least sense.
and Tsubaki-thank YOU. ^___^ finally, someone agrees with me. Thats why i don't ~usually~ associate with "anime" fans, because they don't get why american coverage of japanese stuff is usually lame.
automatic future friend screener:
Satsuki: "so.......uh, do you like Animerica?"
person: " oh yeah its my fav magazine EVAR!!!!"
Satsuki: "Ja ne this, fucker!"
What the fuck are you talking about?Quote:

Kinokuniya=a japanese bookstore often found in various cities across America, as well as many in Japan, China, etc. They carry books/magazines/movies/CDs that are actually from japan, wow!Quote:

finding a magazine that is decent= Go into the anime section of Kinokuniya, find one with an insane looking cover, usually with a giant robot on it, with glaring letters that may read I AM GENIUS!
and there's your anime magazine that is most likely going to be better than Animerica.
Any mainstream magazine is largely going to be BS in most cases, no matter what the subject material...
Animerica is crappy. Dr. Brown is crappier. That article he wrote bashing Sony and Nintendo and kissing MS’s ass had me angry. Anything he writes has me angry. I think that was the last issue I bought.
That remark is very condescending, as you're making a blind generalization. Just because someone reads Animerica doesn't automatically mean they know nothing about anime. Could it be that many people read the magazine because, as you yourself said, it's more or less the only magazine out there? It may be trash but there really hasn't been much else to read for the past few years since Animefan disappeared. Where I live, Animerica comes regularly, so I buy it. US Newtype appears to be a much better magazine but is also more expensive. It also remains to be seen if the level of quality remains consistent.Quote:

AS for getting news from the 'net: couldn't the same be said for game magazines? If the internet is such a better place for news, why did so many people bitch at the death of Gamefan/Go? They like to have a mag in their hands. Remember the toilet and car factor. you can't be on the net all the time. The mag can be brought with you anywhere. Moreover, not everyone is on the 'net.
I understand what you're trying to say but you're generalizing too much there.
The only problem with the insane cover method is that I'm guessing the text is Japanese here. May be great but it doesn't help any if I can't read it.

Why the fuck am I going to read a magazine in a language I can't understand.Quote:

Useless.
i guess the gist is that you'll get all the info you'll ever need just by looking at screenshots.Quote:

No, what I'm saying is reading a bunch of random bullshit symbols that mean nothing to you whatsoever is far more informative than anything Animerica could crank out.
Hey, that's not true. Animerica is a good way to find out which shitty anime is popular with psuedo-geeks at the moment.
Animerica got me interested in Metropolis, which is one of the better films I have ever seen.Quote:

Anyone catch the Ikaruga review? Level four was mentioned.
Duh, only newbies and lamerz read Animerica. I only read magazines in languages I can't understand thank you very much.
So no, pfft, I did not catch the Ikaruga review.
