The 2d beatem' up thread

Well, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that 2d fighters are my favorite type of game.

I recently got my hands on ROM of Rise of the dragons, and I have to say its fucking neat. It's not in the same league as Garou, but then again almost nothing is. Graphically, its very nice, with decent animation and nice character designs. The game is fairly hard in my opinion, but still tremendous fun. Its a welcome breath of fresh air in the rehash dominated 2d fighter genre.


Garou or SFA3 are my favorite beatem' ups. They kick total ass. I pick Gato in Garou (GOD OF FIGHT), and Akuma in SFA3.

I'm confused.

2D fighters never grasped me like the VF games did. Street Fighter Alpha 2 is my favorite 2D fighter, followed up closely by Samurai Showdown and World Heroes (series.)

Beat em and eat em is the best beatemup of all time.

Someone has his genres confused...

He's confused 2D fighters with 2D beat-em ups. You can tell he means traditional 2D fighters due to the Akuma mention.

I've read a couple of UK mags and they always refer to fighters as 'beat em ups'.

Alpha 2 is kickass. I probably play CvSNK2 more though, because Morrigan is spiffy.

xS, which UK mag(s) have you read? As a long-time reader of C & VG, I've never seen fighters referred to as beat-em ups.
