- Unlimited: SaGa for PS2: 101,746 units
- Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance for PS2: 38,972 units
- Panzer Dragoon Orta for Xbox: 23,657 units.

It's a Sega game. On Xbox. In Japan. The fact that it sold more than 37 copies surprises me. Seriously, the fact that Orta's numbers are even comparable to Substances on PS2 is a surprise.
It's not like the numbers are going to be that much different in the U.S., no?
Well, that's not really too much of a shock given the past few years of Japanese game sales.
U.S. sales will probably be the same. I know the Japanese follow trends just like everywhere else but those sales are pathetic. There's no need to patronize.
I find it funny how it's cool here to criticize anyone who likes Madden or doesn't like Sega but God forbid we criticize the Japanese, whose tastes suck as much as our own.

Please remember that this game comes out for a console that typically gets 1% of the game sales every month. If this was a PS2 game and it sold poorly, THEN you could bitch about it.
Plus, how is 23,000 copies compared to the Xbox install base? For all I know, 23,000 could BE the install base for Xbox in Japan. *heh*

actually, a lot of Xboxes were sold. the problem was getting them home from the store. alot of those short japanese guys just dont have enough brute power to lift them up and get the console from one place to another.Quote:

Well, let's face it, 'sides DOA3, no X-Box game in Japan is going to go anywhere. Sounds a lot like JSRF's 26K over there.

I don't know about you, but 23k sales of a niche game, made by Sega, on the niche Xbox, in Japan, within two days of sale, is pretty damned good if you ask me.
The game is in 10% of the available households in under a week. That's a bad thing how?
Plus, Sega doesn't need to sell lots of copies of its Xbox games, as the big, fat 'exclusivity' checks still cash just fine, regardless.
Maybe this goes to show that if you want to actually sell copies of a game you have to release it on a system that has a userbase. 23,000 could have easily been 230,000.
That's near-sightedness, if that is what Sega is thinking. Exclusivity checks don't build brand names. Sales and word of mouth generated from sales do. It is a long-term mistake to take lumps of cash instead of investing in the future of your series.Quote:

Panzer Orta is coming out in the US and EU, you know? Xbox is doing plenty fine in those regions.

Things not in its favor: its on the xbox, in japan, developed by SEGA. And its a niche game to begin with.

Have you played Substance, Melf? I know most people write off MGS2 because of some odd story parts here and there, but if you enjoyed the gameplay then Substance is great. I'm almost done with the VR missions, and I've put in over 30 hours. Then I got Snakes Tales to try.
I know it's a niche title and that Delaware has more Xbox units installed than all of Japan. I just figured that Panzer would at least move some systems. If this game can't do it, I don't see anything that can.
Japan has their own quirky tastes and obviously the Xbox hasn't been able to cater to any of them. However, that being said, I was hoping that there would be more people interested in this game. Even the decent name recognition of the series on Saturn hasn't helped.
PS2 Version of Substance is out?
Did the Panzer Dragoon series even sell that well in Japan during the saturn days?

Valgar, I think it sold modestly well, but not well enough to realistically expect the sequel to move a significant amount of systems.
Xbox's size is a pretty big issue in Japan. It'd be doing exponentially better if it were PS2-sized. Japanese homes are very small, and I imagine that the majority of them who look at an Xbox think "There is no way that will fit in my entertainment center" before anything else.

American-made games in general don't sell in Japan either, for the very same reason. They never have. The biggest-selling U.S. console game in Japan ever was, what, Crash Bandicoot? And that certainly didn't crack the million sold mark. So, if American made games have never sold well in Japan, then why would an American made game system that plays American games (in addition to a few Japanese games) sell well?

I've played up to the 5th level of Panzer Dragoon Orta and it truly is christ-like. 23K sales is criminal whilst shit like Unlimited Saga sells 100K. Interestingly, the latter has got slated by many Japanese gamers with a huge number of second hand copies floating around Akihabara. Many shops have slashed the price to 3800Y brand new to counter this. Another Square turkey.

Look at it this way folks, Orta's racking up sales in Japan that are at least as good as the ones Strider 2 was getting right after its' release.

I think it had first-week sales of around 15,000, or was that JSR? Eh, either way. Both games are loved by many (moreso JSR) and they did poorly in Japan.
