The golden era for the Final Fantasy series imo was on the snes.
Since we only got the USA Final Fantasy 2 and 3 those are your choices...
I played FF2 back in its hey day and loved it to death, 3 I just recently started playing and although its a great game it doesnt have that same magic for me as 2 did.
So my vote goes for FF2....
So, we're talking FFIV and VI here then? If so FFIV is the better game IMO... FFVI was great but it kind of fell apart in the end... (the world of ruin sucked). It did have a great end boss though.
Overall, FF6 was the superior game. It had memorable characters with deep stories for almost everyone, a stunning soundtrack that still stands out today, the incorporation of the Blitz system, and it was one loooooooong ass game.
Oh yea, and then there's everybody's favorite, the Opera Scene. I remember my brother saying the game was only ok, and after he saw that part, he was hooked on it for a good week. He racked like 60 something hours by the weeks end.
The few things that made FF4 better was the story... the soundtrack was pretty good, too. The game was alot more challenging... and that area before the last boss me laugh in disbelief(damn Behemoths...).
They are both amazing games. 6 will always have a place in my heart, though. :)
Final Fantasy 2. I liked the story and characters a little more.
Well, Since I havent played 2 :), FF3 wins by the default.
But honestly, FF3 was, and still is one of the best rpgs I ever played. Grand story, characters, events, sub-quests, music, all of them together made one hella of experience.
The whole End of the World part was something-something. And then the suicide, I was like - What???? How can the game just end like that, and then whole new world was open, and game continued.
2 & 3 or 4 & 6?
3 > 2.
6 > 4.
Um, yeah. If you mean FF IV (SNES FF II) and FF VI (SNES FF III) then I'll have to give the nod to FF VI. Better story, much better characters, better sound, and better graphics.
I thought the stroy and characters in 6 sucked, honestly. Really FF6 didn't have much central story, it was just a collection of one-dimensional character with stupid speech patterns that each had an anecdotal background story. It wasn't a strong story at all. I felt FF4 was much stronger in this regard. FF6 also loses majorpoints for being a major step in the wrong direction and dummying down the gameplay over 5. It was trying to be cinematic, but it didn't have that epic feel. The story felt peicemeal and anecdotal like Valkyrie Profile, but not as well done, and without the enjoyable gameplay to redeem it.Quote:

I have to agree i felt no attachment to the characters in VI at all
they were all so one dimensional and your never given any real time with anyone of them just short interludes with them
VI had no central story to me, the having to use what 12 different characters and level all of them up instead of the characters you didnt use going up slightly with he main ones you were using, it was a pain in the ass and you HAD to do it cause you had to use EVERYONE during the end
personally for my money IV was the better game i still remember all the characters and what happened to them ive played through the game sooo many times now
its just IMHO the best RPG ever for me and Cecil is the best main Character ever
I think I was in 11th grade when I played FF 2 and I loved it, but can't really remember much about the story.
FF 3/6 is my favorite one. It had the best characters IMO, and the ninja Shadow was the coolest character including his flashback dreams that revealed insight into his dark past. Loved that!
6 suffered from having too many characters involved directly in the storyline. It was fun at times but gave me headaches in the end and I ended up using five or six characters and leaving the others to rot. The graphics and sound and such were obviously better (it was a number of years after 4 and at the peak of the SNES power) but the battle system was broken beyond belief IMHO.
Of course I am of the opinion that 4 was the pinnacle of the FF battle system : real active time, five characters in battle (no switching necessary), each character with unique abilities and roles in battle (not everyone can do everything), spell timing in direct relation to use, and weapon/magic balancing.
So.
FF4 takes the cake as the better of the two and the *best* FF IMHO.
And I agree with Cecil as the best main character - he's *NOT* a shy, reclusive, pre-teen with a bad haircut and horrible social skills.
But what do I know?

I personally enjoy 3 more. I'm not sure why, or if it's justified, but it's my own perception of how I like it, so I do... yeah.... I think.
I also like FF2.
FF3 was good for me though. I think Kefka did it in for me, he was such a maniacal villain, just wanting to destroy all with the world under his thumb. And what made him super insane was that he actually SUCCEEDED. FF2 had alot of cool things and alot of characters got sacrificed for the game, which made it better.
It also remains one of the only Final Fantasies in which you need to figure out strategy for some boss fights. FF3 has alot of gameplay mechanics with Sabin, Edgar and every character had their unique input.
I'll go with FF3.
Also, somebody said above that the world of ruin sucked. And that's exactly what was supposed to be felt. He destroyed the world, it wasn't supposed to have the bounty and splendor of the perfect society that they had all along, it was split. It moves the plot along nicely.
FF2 (which is also one of my favorite rpgs of all time). FF3 was also good, just not as good as FF2.

i think he meant as in the game during the world of ruin sucked and i kinda agree
you spend all your time in the begging finding everyone and then your dropped into the world of ruin which was WAY TO open ended and you had to find everyone AGAIN
and it was kinda just like ok here we are now uhh lets find everyone and kill kefka

I still have my conflicts.
FF2(FF4j) was a way better storyline and way better characters and overall world I think.
FF3(FF6j) was techincally superior in every way, had awesome varied game mechanics to the point EVERY character played totally differently, a customization to each player's play style.
Basically, FF2 was the better experience for me the first time around. But FF3 is infinitely more replayable and the world more explorable with much more secrets and many more ways to play.
Still, it seems like FF2 was localized worse than FF3. The lowered difficulty level, the subtraction of items, the toning down of story elements, questionable translations and altering a few non-key locations all add up to hurt FF2 a little. FF4j was superior to FF2.
FFVI is overrated in just about every way possible.
following is all IMO, of course:
1. too many characters, mostly are unappealing, or at the very least dull.
2. overrated music. dull in the main.
3. graphics very polished but lack variety.
4. pacing is crap.
5. stupid antagonist.
6. localization is kind of kiddie, which detracts.
it's a well-made game but it lacks the certain something which makes it compelling. and the opera just made me roll my eyes, even at the time. =)
whereas FFIV's more or less got it all, and i still find it very playable (i ran through it again when FFC came out on PS.) then again i am an unabashed FFIV lover. i think it has one of the best soundtracks in the series, the most compelling cast prior to the kitase/nojima stuff, most epic feel and story -- in fact, if it weren't an early 16 bit game, it'd have more "epic" sweep than even the more recent games, probably, just because of the subject matter. an FFX-engine remake of FFIV would be divine.
I like 3/6 a lot more. The artwork and gameplay are much better. It just has a less cheesy feel to it.

Part 2 was where Cecil changed to a Paladin, right? I loved that part. Better of the two, IMO.
I preferred FF2 (aka FF4). FF3/6 was okay but there wasn’t really any payoff at the end, the story just ended. Sure they all had their little cheesy speeches at the end but it never really showed us what the characters do after their moments of self-realizations. I mean The Joker could say a long-winded speech about never trying to find some stupid ways to kill Batman ever again and then 5 minutes later be try to kill him with a feather duster. I felt FF4s story at least had some closure. And another thing that really bugged me about FF4 was how the characters never really interacted with each other. I mean Gau and Relm were around the same age so you’d think that they’d goof around and do stupid childish things but they never even talk to each other. :rolleyes:

FF2 I loved as well, but I can come back to 3, where 2 is just played out for me.

That's part of what made it great. A far better game than FF2(4), in all respects. Although 2(4) is a great game as well. Just not a better game.

because it was so open ended the story suffered as did the character development
and ive gone through VI 2 times i dont think i could ever ever ever go through it again
you have to do SO MUCH LEVELING UP in that game seriously easily have my time in that game is spent at the end leveling up all the lame ass characters i didnt use during the game because you have to use everyone at the end
Shadow, Cyan, and Sabin were the only characters i really liked from it

IV all the way. It was a revelation when it came out.
A few years later, VI seemed like more of the same to me.
Played FF3 for about 4 -5 hours today, im about 13 hours into the game and havent gotten stuck anywhere.
I have opened the gate....
The story has picked up for the better also...
Does anyone know if there was translations of the Final Fantasy games that we didnt get in the USA either in rom translation or through some psx compilation etc. ?
Damnit I just dug through my pile of non played games and realised i have FF anthlogies for the psx...
Which has the FF3 usa and FFv...
Im playing my FF3 snes cart atm, is there any reason to want to play it on the Anthologies disc?
I constantly see people saying that IV had a better story, and I'll never understand why. IV had:
1) A main boss that came completely out of nowhere.
2) Many ridiculously nonsensical parts (We need to get to the moon. Hmm, how can we get there? OF COURSE! A GIANT FUCKING WHALE that was raised through praying!).
3) Stupidly cookie cutter characters that had no real personality (the only character who was even mildly interesting was Kain, and then you find out he wasn't really being a bad guy, he was just mind controlled. Dumb).
Whereas VI had actual character development (Terra learning to love, Celes learning that people can change, Shadow going from complete mercenary to semi-decent guy, etc.), a main boss you knew you were going head to head with the entire story, and not nearly the same level of "We just made this up to advance the plot" crap that infuses IV.
Not that IV was a bad game, I just think that because it came out earlier, people tend to look at it through nostaligia-colored glasses.

thatll mean the only ones we havent seen will be III and XI there are translated roms of II and III out there on the net
