There have been rumours for a few months that Sonic Team was developing a "special project" for PS2... well... it turns out that the rumours are true and it's a brand new title!
Magic Box: « Sega Sonic Team announced they are currently developing a brand new title for PlayStation 2, the game will be released sometimes in 2003. »
Brand new Sonic Team game = much excitement. :)

What, would you rather it be on the smaller Xbox market? I think it's a great move by Sonic Team. Sega's Shinobi is the number 2 seller in Japan, with over 100,000 units it's first week. Looks like they could make a worse choice for where to bring the game.

I'd rather it be on Cube or Xbox, thank you very much, and not because of sales what so ever, but because Sonic Team's games tend to be graphically inventive and artistic, and given that the PS2 is by far the least powerful system, it takes a lot away from what Sonic Team's creative vision could be. Jesus, I guess wanting the best of a game is wrong now, eh?
I own all 3 systems now and after seeing J&D, Rygar, and Sly Cooper
I cant really claim any of the three to be leauges ahead of the other 2...
yeah, i don't think the depravity is graphics is THAT evident at this point...
i'm fine with it on PS2...
There is just something about the openess and style of the graphics in J&D that I love dearly. :)

he's trying to point out how the PSX was far superior to the Saturn when it came to 3d graphics... and that Nights may have been better as a PSX game
and yes, it would have looked a lot better on the PSX, but i don't think the difference in PS2/XBox is as big as PSX/Saturn

The game's colors are still bright, and the character models aren't bad. I still consider it to be a great game, graphically. Seeing a PS2 sequel would be great, since it would probably be a great game, and would be able to reach a much larger audience.
Well I tend to agree, I mean just a few days ago I was talking to a friend (hayato42) about how amazed I was that PS2 was still pumping out graphics like Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank, but GC and XB are still definitely more powerful, that's my whole point, the more power the more you can do. I am not so sure. Some of Sega's internal teams got the Saturn to sing. The problem was that very few of the 3rd parties could do the same. This is very similar to the current PS2 situation. Take a look at Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 on PS2. It is a gorgeous racing game. The problem is that not all developers have the resources that EA does to dig into the hardware and max it out. It's truly not a matter of raw power. It's a matter of decoding the architecture. I have complete faith that Sonic Team has both the talent and the attention to detail to accomplish that on the PS2.Quote:

That's a matter of opinion. I think Sega Rally, Virtual Fighter 2, and Panzer Dragoon Zwie, were some of the better looking games of the 32/64 bit consoles. Don't tell me Gran Tourismo looked better than Sega Rally 95, or I'll fall out of this chair laughing!

Play games like Gun Griffon (First Gen Saturn) and you'll see just how much 3-D power the Saturn had. This from a 3rd party publisher called Game Arts. Scavenger could also make the Saturn Hardware sing with games like Amok and Scorcher. Scorcher had some nice lighting and smoke effects which I think, could'nt have or have'nt been done any better on the PSX. EA's Soviet Strike looked great on the Saturn and some say it actually played smoother than the PSX version.
The PS2 is just like the Saturn. It's a bitch to program, but when great developer gets ahold of the hardware, it can pull off some of the best graphics. Sonic Team, AM2 and Visual Concepts are very good programmers and I'm sure Sonic Team, with all it's knowledge can make the PS2 look like a Gamecube.
Back onto the topic. I think Sega needs a million seller title and the PS2 offers the best market for this to happen. Sure the Gamecube or Xbox would/could provide a slightly better looking game, but I feel the PS2 is more than competent enough to provide what Sonic Team needs to make a great game.
Might I add that yes its true one system may have better specs I feel allot of oppinion is based off of ports of games.
When a game is made for 1 console and then ported to another often the port gets the rush hack job....

Lets not fool ourselves; Sonic Team could make a better looking game in less time on the xbox or gamecube. Not only because they are more powerful and developer friendly, but because they have worked with the hardware before. And no matter how talented you are, you ain't gonna make a PS2 game look like a gamecube game.
I'm glad to see a new sonic team game though. they haven't done anything fresh in awhile.

I would rather see it on Gamecube too... that system is lighting up it looks like in the future. After March GC supplants Xbox in my opinion as the console to own.... judgeing by scheduled releases.
VF 4 sold pretty well, after all, it's a Greatest Hits title. Monkey Ball sold well for them as well. I'm not sure how well Soccer Slam did sales-wise.
I'd like to see it on XBox or GC... For the controller. :p
In any case, Sonic Team, especially new stuff from Sonic Team = Good shit. I'm all for it, no matter the system.
Damn, Sonic Team finally pulls their thumbs out of their asses to make an original game and it goes to the PS2. Oh well.
Worldwide, I think all those games did at least 1 million combined.
Well, as someone else put it, I'm a rich Kuwaiti oil tycoon with lots of $$$$$...so I'd rather see it on Xbox. Hopefully they'll use progressive and DTS on the PS2 port at the least. :D
Wouldn't Sonic Adventure 3 be considered a "brand new game"? They didn't exactly make it clear they are working on a new franchise.
It would be very interesting if it were Sonic Adventure 3, or some other Sonic game, on the PS2.

They sold pretty well, but not a million units. I believe Super Monkey Ball sold about 350,000 units in Japan and another 300,000 in the US. If I recall right, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was in the top 5, on the charts, for only a couple of months, same with VF4. A top 5 seller in the US only has to sell about 100,000 units to be in the top 5, as most software below that number is selling at least 30,000 units.
Also note that VF4 was on the PS2, the very system that people are in question of, when it come to a game being developed by Sonic Team, for it.

It is unlikely on its own because the perceived userbase of the GameCube is the same group that would buy Sonic.
Combined with the fact that SA2 and SMC are on the GameCube, it becomes more likely that Sega would want to keep some continuity.
Maybe they want more sales. I doubt sega will stay on the XB much longer.
I would love to see Sega pick a system and stick with it, even if it is the PS2. Chasing a company's games all over hell's half acre sucks.

You're right, Sega is third party so they shouldn't limit themselves to one console. They should release all their games simultaneously on all three consoles.

Well.. it's pretty far-fetched.. but supposedly Sega R&D is still developing hardware and every now.. and then you here rumblings so you never know... Still it's doubtful but it can't hurt to dream. ;)
A new SEGA system would be a dream come true. My favorite systems are always the ones with stellar 1st/2nd party support. And I don't think its any coincidence that SEGA's quality has gone down since going 3rd party

Remember, Sega's still relatively new to the third-party game. They haven't found their groove yet. I think that the quality of their software is a bit lower now, but that could just be because they're still unfamiliar with the hardware that they're working on.
