Unreal Championship: playing times

I should be on tonight, starting at around 8-10 mountain time, and up until the wee hours of the morning. I'll likely host some smaller instagib deathmatch rounds, but I'd be game for some bombing runs too if anyone shows up.

About the game itself: It's a tough one to get into, I must admit. But once you do, you might as well get that communicator surgically implanted. I'm certainly not the best of players, but I can show the ropes and a couple neat tricks to any TNL FNGs that want to hook up. I'd very much like to see some TNL folks as hopelessly addicted to the game as I am.

I'd be more than happy to join you, unfortunatley, I only have the Moto GP demo and Mech Assault.

How long would it take to get used to playing with a controller for someone who never played any of the big name Console FPS games?

Mode, check your friend's requests...and I get my @$$ kicked regularly in UC, I need some major tips...

RedTerrier: I was just on and didn't see a friend's request. If it doesn't turn up next time, I'll just shoot one your way.

I found the control awkward at first, even considering I'm no stranger to FPS-ing with a pad. I warmed up to it pretty quickly, though, and find it works very well. Scrolling through weapons and hitting those quick 180s is practically second nature by now.

Saw Chux for a bit tonight in a CTF match, but he was in, out and back on MechAssault awfully quick. Damn you, Chux, damn you!

I had one or two matches with Chux before everyone left, I remember seeing Ampresand, Chux, Nigel and one or two other people from TNL all in there, then some guy xCxBx or something got all pissed off at me so we did one 1 on 1-ing while chux went and destroyed some buildings, its was a blast considering it was my first time every playing Mech Assault.

Tough to get into? Unreal is the best gaming purchase I've made in a while. My favorite FPS since Goldeneye. I'll be sure to hook up with some of you at some point. AFX of Heavens is my gamertag.

What I mean by 'tough to get into' is that the game can be quite intimidating, as there are some seriously good players out there. It took me awhile to get to the point where I could even hold my own.

I actually played for the first time today, and went online. Lost the first game, lost the second by 1 fucking frag. Just simple 8 player deathmatch shit, but I was still proud that I didn't get my ass handed to me.

We'll have to hook up -- I'll add you to my friends list tonight. I'd love to get some 4 player survival matches going with the TNL folk.

RedTerrier: I saw you for a bit in that CTF match on maul. Tried to say hi, but for some reason no one could hear me. Happens every so often, for whatever reason.

My profiles: EHM, MODE, or MODE7. Generally MODE, though.

Mode, I woulda stuck around longer but Lag + Insta Gib = Pissed.

I really don't dig Insta Gib matches, but I'll tolerate them if I get a steady server.

As for the severity of the @$$ whooping, it has gone down considerbly, but I still barely hold my own out there. I must say that I'm more of a capture the flag/domination type myself though. haven't tried bombing run in live yet though...

Sounds like a plan mode, I should start playing around 8:30 EST...ya know, I've always wondered what it would be like chatting with you in realtime, and if you could crack those one-liners with a straight face...the mind boggles...

Right. Plus everyone's armed with the shock rifle, primary fire only.

Just finished up a few bombing run matches with the Terrier, but I might be on again in a couple hours.

ye gods, Mode7 doesn't mess around! we played about 5 games of bombing run, and he scored more points than the opposing teams cumulative combined scores...my backside is still a bit sore from the whupping I endured, but at least Mode made us look good. :cool:
I need to change my race; any tips?

I swear by the Gen Mo'Kai, especially for bombing run and CTF. Once they dial in agility, they are gone. With only 80 health you could probably do better for survival and DM games, though. Here are the profiles I currently have saved:

THORAX: automaton, rocket launcher (damage). That rocket lock-on is a beautiful thing, especially when combined with alternate fire. Automatons are great for getting up into the rafters to hide, and you'll be a force of nature if you can manage to get your jumping + aiming skills down.

MODE: Forget the character's name, but the affinity is shock rifle (firing rate). The combo on the shock rifle is a beast, and not to be underestimated. The primary fire is much more viable thanks to the firing rate boost as well.

BRUTALIS: Nightmare, assault rifle (ammo). I need to spend more time with this character, as you can do some serious damage with the assault rifle, given a little practice. Ammo affinity = a pile of grenades. Though, given the amount of AR ammo found in each stage, perhaps it might be smarter to stick with a damage affinity.

MOKARA: Gen Mo'Kai, shield gun (ammo). Highly specialized character, best suited to CTF matches and other support roles. Where normal characters have 100 ammo for their shield guns, Mokara has 300. You need to be able to run the stages backwards, but expect to tear the competition up once you can.

I think the main thing to consider is really weapon type and affinity, with race almost being secondary. But that's just me.

OK, picked up UC for just over $32 used, expect a new person's ass to kick online :)

I was playing Moto GP last night and saw you were online playing UC, felt like joining, but I was on a good run in GP, so I stuck with that. Though now that sulk has UC I'll probably be playing a bit more, perhaps we will run into you. :D

What makes you think it wasn't my bag? The fact that I got my ass kicked over and over again? I've been spoiled by the rocket/lightning fests, and my non-skill with any other weapon showed. It was fun, and definitely different though, and it took a lot more thought than the chaos that I'm used to. I usually play standard team DM, but I'm up for most anything.

And the reason you couldn't hear me is because I had my mic off. I was waiting for the UPS guy the first half of the time we played, and thumbing through the MGS:S manual the other half. I'm not used to playing games online, so I tend to do other things besides talk.

It was fun though. I have Diff and yourself on my friends list so far, but anyone else who wants to can add me also. PM me with your tag if nothing else, and I'll add you.

I admit that I've previously given Unreal almost no thought. However, now that I've gotten a small taste of online gaming, and seeing the effusive praise for this title, I'm thinking that I should really grab it and give it a go.

Naw, just that it's a pretty particular sort of thing. I basically never see AR survival matches apart from the ones I host myself. I really dig it though -- it's a bit like instagib, in that it's quite focused and uncluttered. Definitely a nice break from the norm.

Prince: It definitely has my recommendation. The only real limit to this game is yourself, and how far you can learn and progress. Now we will see whose kung-fu is best!

You must have yourself a pretty mean connection, AFX. We were close to 16 players there, and there was only the very occasional hiccup of lag. Or an outright belch in the case of Gael, but that's pretty well standard. Nice to see Melf there for a bit, too. I offed myself with a rocket launcher chasing him.

Something I just found out today: connect to xbox live through the console and then press Y -- it'll give you stats on your connection, including upload and download speeds. Interestingly, the results I get from that and dslreports are a world apart. Go figure.

I have a decent connection, but not enough to beat you though. I killed you once though, and it made me feel like a man.

I still can't get this to work.

So I beat the single player mode on Godlike difficulty. I don't think I've ever used that much profanity in my entire life, but I did it. For those wondering what you get for your trouble, you're rewarded with... absolutely dick-all. Save bragging rights, of course.

Chux: you actually have to connect to Xbox Live. Use the connection manager/testing thing in the dashboard.

I just found UC in my room today, I realized I've never played it once yet and I've had it since like christmas time.

Yeah, I've never been too fond of juggernauts. All that extra health seems a bit beside the point when you're such a large and pokey target.

Mog, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you can't quite swing those 8 player games. 3 on 3 is probably about right, especially for instagib. That hall camping in Cursed was hilarious, by the way.

heh, Just so you know I had 3 people playing online on 1 box. So seeing what the hell I was doing most of the time was impossible. The only thing that made it passable was instagib. One level was so framey it was funny.:D The snow level one is just not possible with more then 2 people per box. Most of tge time I couldnt tell what the hell was going on. It was cool though.
And I realize I can only host 6 well, not sure why it was on 8. Too lazy to change it once I realized.

AquaMortis -- pretty damn neat.
Leviathan -- not bad; somewhat claustrophobic.
Inferno -- wicked cool. Tons of fun for instagib.
Otaros Run -- slick. I can see robot users being pissed at the low ceiling, though.

yup, it runs smoother now too. 2-4 players per box online even works ok framerate wise. Too bad I'm hooked on Wolfenstein now.... damnit.

Okay, I'm currently borrowing this off a friend, and I have to say I'm pleasantly suprised. Previously I'd only played it split screen, and that hadn't left a favourable impression.

So, does anybody here still play this? I have no clue what I'm doing, but that assault rifle sure is fun.

Yup -- I still jump on from time to time. Gotta get that hyperactive combat fix somewhere.
