I may be a little off, but that's what I gathered from the movie.
I have the leatherbound version of all three books, but I have yet to read them since it seems so many fans of the books hate how PJ has changed the story for his movies. Once I've seen all three I'll jump in and read them.
I have read the Hobbit three times though.
