What is the next Xbox?

Some furtive wheeling and dealings are going on over in Redmond, Washington as Microsoft has registered the domains xboxnext.com, xboxnext.net, and xboxnext.org (xboxnext.info belongs to some guy in Kansas City).

Naturally, this leads to some speculation and speculate we will. Xbox Next could be the name of the second Xbox (Bill Gates has said that he would like to pull the rug from underneath Sony's feet in terms of who gets their next big system out first), or it can be the name of the oft-rumored compact version of the Xbox, or it can even be the name of that funny-looking green Xbox revealed a two months ago.

But then again, I'm sure people remember the rout when Nintendo of America registered sinandpunishment.com and sin-and-punishment.com...

I really don't think that it would be in MS's best interest, to get their hardware out first. It did'nt work for Sega on two tries and they don't have the console brand recognition of Sony either.


Nintendo has always taken the wait and see, before releasing their hardware and it's generally paid off. Microsoft is better off coming out with more powerful hardware, shortly after Sony's offering, because the next Playstation will most like sell a lot of units, wether Microsoft beats them to the punch, or not.

I think, if they can release it like a week or so before PS2, and still have the more powerful system, they're going to be in really good shape.

I want new hardware now. Right now.

The more powerful the better.

The question is, will Sony release another weak platform in the PS3?

If so XBOX coming on strong could pay off....

It takes awhile for people to change views, if MS can pull off twice in a row having the most powerfull machine they will get that reputation and everyone knows that graphics alone tend to sale...

It doesn't matter to me since I am not yet interested in NextGen hardware right now but MS should hold thier cards until Sony plays thiers. The next Xbox should be settled around tenious parameters. If the PS3 is walloping good then they would settle on releaseing an alternitive quickly to stave of the PS3's incoming insurmountable lead. If the PS3 doesn't show good results technlogically they can ride the original Xbox and release a much more powerful (and cheaper for MS) system 6 - 8 months later (depending on dates). By no means should they start the next horse race. They've bulit a reputation of Power and is becomeing a more and more viable alternitive. No need to squander that by getting out the gate before Sony. If they do, Sony can take some time and hone a better product (with a larger install base for a back-library mind you) because frankly, Sony can take thier time once Microsofts cards are on the table. If Sony wants something out by 2005 then MS should let them and NOT beat them out of the gate. It's unwise. But then, I ne'er built a massive software empire so what do I know.

We seem to be forgetting that Sony will no doubt be releasing the PS2 in Japan first, likely half a year or more before releasing it in the US, if we take a hint from their past console releases. Conversely, MS will almost assuredly be releasing the XBox 2 in the USA first, thus giving them a bit of a window to trump the capabilities of the PS2. Sony will *have* to show their cards first. They always have, and MS will likely swoop in at that point and make sure their next console exceeds the PS3's capabilities. That's my viewpoint, anyhow. And that's also assuming the PS2's successor beats the Xboxen progeny to the market in the first place. In Japan.

Yeah, unless Sony sees to release PS3 here first (which would certainly piss off a ton of Japanese fans), Microsoft is going to have a huge advantage every console war.
