Think about it, I do all the time, I bet very few people who say I have a "best" friend really do have one.
What's you definition of a best freind, and do you really have a best friend?
This is something that runs deep with me so I hope it's not looked upon as spam :sweat:
Well I have a few pretty close friends but I also have had friends who have taken advantage or were becoming too demanding for my tastes.
I have at least one best friend, for sure. I pet him every day.
As for human friends, yeah, I have one.

well, My best friends are people that I get along with very well, and respect as honest, great people. However, the feeling should be mutual, as friend indicates that the other person likes you back.
Out of all of my friends, I'd say I have 2 that qualify as best friends. They aren't geniuses or anything, but just really great people.
I don't really know anymore. I seem to be the one doing all the talking, and doing all the calling these days.
But I do have one friend who still usially calls me more than I call him and I am able to talk about anything to. -_- same guy who barrows stuff and gives it back to me in shitty shape, so I don't know.
Man, thanks for the thread, I didn't relize how alone I was untill this.
My wife is my best friend. No, really. Best friends with benefits. We talk more than most couples we know, we enjoy many of the same things, and, in general, get along quite nicely.
Some of my criteria for "best friend":
Your best friend is the person you call when you want to give up on the world and don't know what to do.
Your best friend is someone you can always count on.
Your best friend is the first person that pops into your mind when you need to share some good fortune (or bad) that happened to you.
Your best friend is someone you'd jump in front of a truck to save.

I used to have 3 people who I considered to be my best friends. Our whole circle used to refer to us as 'The 4 Corners' because we were connected so tight. Now we're down to 3 thanks to uhhh..stuff. So I have 2 people who I consider to be my best friends. I try not to refer to them as my best friends around my other friends though. That just seems really mean.
no one, really. More because I see that as being a mutual thing, and don't know what light my friends see me in. It'd be pretty pompous to assume someone else thinks the world of me when I don't know that for a fact.
For someone to be my best friend the first requesite they must meet is to be a ninja.
I suppose that'd be my take on it - the mutual deal and I wouldn't want to come off as pompous as well. The thing is, when you've been a loner for most of your childhood and only really made 'good good' friends in high school, you tend to have a lot of reservations about many things and especially regarding people. I have alot of "aqquaintences" (coworkers and others I've met in my daily life) whom I am used to seeing on a regular basis, but very few close friends.Quote:

Compared to high school when I was part of an extremely large large circle of friends, my situation seems kinda sparse thesedays, but I don't mind really, I get nostalgic occasionally but never depressed over that fact. Life is a lot more complicated and confusing thesedays and I think that it wouldn't help me to have a large group of friends to "hang around with" (not likely I'd have the time anyway) - just a few select friends who've been through the battlefield with me.
Being away from such a large group is somewhat good in the sense that you get to know yourself better I suppose, I mean at the end of the day when work is done, school is done or whatever has passed all you have is yourself to deal with. I suppose that I have a Henry Rollins-ish view point towards being alone or whatnot - but it helps to view the world in that light, and to become comfortable with being alone.

All my friends are best friends, but some are bester than others.
i have about 4 best friends. some of them i don't see every day. and only 2 of them are from the same circle of friends. they're my best friends 'cause i can tell them anything. they respect my opinions even if they don't agree with them and i do the same with them. i can have fun with them and be serious with them. i used to think a best friend was just someone you had fun with all the time....but that's not the case for me. not any more at least. we give eachother space when it's needed and we know each others moods pretty well. i do have one friend out of those 4 though who understands me like no one else does. i totally get her as well. we make a point of seeing eachother at least once a week. if we can't then it's ok, but we'd still call just to check up on eachother. we have tons of fun together doin' all kinds of stuff. we also get into some pretty heated conversations. even when we argue there's still this air of respect and admiration between us. makes me feel great.
I have a small circle of friends I see pretty often and enjoy being around....however,as was said in an earlier post, for the most part I'm more of a natural loner. So basically I dont really think I have anyone I could consider a best friend.
A best friend is someone who in every situation you may encounter in life, you would not be uncomfortable having them there for.
If you can picture yourself and that person in any concievable situation (not sexual), then that is your best friend.

This would be my post, except I'm not very sure about that Henry Rollins thing. I've not heard of that before.
Henry Rollins - of the Rollins Band, (also the former lead singer for Black Flag). In addition to the rocking music he makes with said band, he does awesome spoken word shows/albums, writes and publishes his own books, occasionally acts and is the host of "Full Metal Challenge" - he's something of a rennaisaince man who I consider very wise. Its hard to know where to start with Rollins so I'd advise picking up the album "The End of Silence" by the Rollins Band, and "Think Tank" (spoken word comedy album), and checking out the book "Black Coffee Blues" or "The Portable Henry Rollins".

Aha. I thought the name sounded sort of familiar. He came here to ISU around five years ago, I think. Very funny guy, though I haven't heard any of his music. He may have said something about this alone thing, I don't really remember...I don't remember much of that speech, actually.
thats cool - I've actually never seen a Rollins spoken word performace live, only have heard the records and watched the dvd - but have seen the hard rocking rollins band live on Aug 25th 2001. I hope to remedy the former sometime soon.
