So yeah, I assume at least some of you like to head out to local arcades for fighting games. What I intend on trying to do is set up a tool so people can search for arcades by any number of criteria, let it be anything from area code to what games they carry to country to description to whether or not they hold tournaments. And I need input! I don't wanna go to all the trouble of making one so people don't use it...
Anywho, drop a reply if you're interested in having something like this.
I'd love to be able to use something like this. Seems real handy.
Can you make it run on Palm OS? That would rock!

If Palm OS browsers use WAP technology, then probably... I've pissed around with WAP html before. It's fairly easy.Quote:

I think I remember seeing a site or two that have done this in the past. I'll check my faves folder when I get home to see if I still have them.
And it could work really well, but you need to have high user cooperation me thinks.
What I mean is you need to have alot of people helping you update the database of all the different arcades, and on a regular basis also to keep track of new games.
The actual programming wouldn't be very hard (just a DB, and some forms that users can update the info with), the problem with how I see it would be making sure you have enough people to really fill out the database.
Sounds dandy to me. I hope it's worth the trouble.

But that doesn't change the fact that if you pull it off it could be a great app for people still interested in going to arcades.

arcades, so I can contribute to the database.
You can also let the user comment on the condition of each
arcade machine--joystick stiffness, button functionality,
game settings, and so on.

It would be much appreciated if you could hook up some of us Chicago area dwellers with this info! I've only been able to locate Enchanted Castles, Gameworks, etc.,. I'm not sure of that Capcom arcade where every game was a nickel is still in existence or not :( .

I think it's a good idea. I'd recommend including more than just fighting games though.
If you plan on making it international I can tell you about some arcades in Montréal, even though I don't frequent them often. I have been meaning to try Initial D though..... ;)

Here in OH, I can hardly find any shmups in arcades (I've seen a Strikers 1945 II at a bowling alley's arcade, but little else). It'd be nice to see if there's some location with good stuff that I am missing out on.
YES! Brilliant idea. I plan to take a road trip in the summer and knowing where all arcades were and what they contained would really help out.

If I my car didn't suck at long-distance travel (it's old and I can't afford a better one), I'd volunteer to comb the entire state of Maine for this. Instead, I'll donate information on whatever arcade I come across around here. I always carry a little notebook around with me (like the dork that I am). Just don't expect a lot of updates from me, 'cause I don't get out much.

No, Im just kidding.
Write it in Perl, PHP, or ASP (last resort) and MySQL and then set up an Avantgo page. Thats absolutely the easiest way to do it good until you wanna sit down and code a Palm version. Doing it on WAP is a VERY VERY bad idea. WAP really doesn't have much of a future.
This is actually really easy to do but its also a very good idea.

And diffusionx: I finished "coding" it already. Took about 2 hours with my trusted friend php. It's all about info gathering now...
Man would that be a helpful tool. I'd love to be able to see where the good games are and plan some trips around these places. A question though, how big of an area do you plan to cover with the database, and how often would it be updated? Ok that's two questions, but...

As it stands right now, I have the means to cover just about anywhere in canada/usa. As long as the zip/postal code is under ten characters, phone number is 7 digits and the areacode is =< 3, I can probably put it on the database. I'm not sure how this info works in other parts of the world, like south america/asia/africa/australia/europe, but I know for sure I can cover north america.
Keep in mind I said I had the means, not the drive... :p So, unless the demand for intercontinental arcades is really high, I'll probably just stick with NA.

Alright ladies and gentlemen, The first revision should be up sometime this weekend. There's gonna be a form to submit data, a page to show detailed information about arcades, and hopefully a nice and easy-to-use search engine.
Driving/area maps (!) are gonna be provided via Yahoo! Maps as well, incase you're bad at finding street addresses. :p
Great idea. Do it. But I had it first, ages ago. So there.
You could include information like price for a credit(important) along with each entry. Make it worldwide. Other stuff I can't remember...Allow a facility for other users to verify each entry to back them up. You could have entries for actual arcades as well as the games they contain and allow comments for those arcades e.g. 'full of scumbags', 'broken joysticks' etc.

Chibi Nappa is right. I wondered if that was still there. I don't know anyone in StateCollege anymore, but last summer we were planning a road trip to go tubing and camping at a state park nearby, and that arcade was solidly on our agenda. This summer nothing's going to stop me.
Tempe Arizona had the arcade, but sadly I found out on the Go board that it closed in like 98 or 99.
There was a decent arcade on HighSt in Columbus Ohio, I heard that closed long ago too. :(
