Ah, the smell of new gaming stuff

Is anyone else here enamored by the smell of a new game, system, accessory, etc.? You know, that fresh-from-the-electronics-manufacturing-factory smell? It's kinda hard to describe, but I personally love it. I always open the box/case and sniff the contents whenever I buy a new game. Considering how much people love video games at TNL, I doubt I'm the only one here who does this.

When I got my GameCube for Xmas, I was shocked to find out that it smelled just like the NES and SNES packages when they were new. The games smell different, but for some reason the system contained the same familiar aroma of the company's earlier consoles (which I couldn't forget if I tried). Talk about a blast of nostalgia. I think I'd get the same effect with GBC games, but they're missing the all-important stryofoam.

I've bought three new Japanese games since I started importing (one DC, two Saturn), and all three have a rather odd, unique smell, much unlike the smell of new American games for the same systems. Maybe they use different chemicals during the printing/pressing process in Japan...

I wonder what a new European game smells like. Guess I'll find out when I get Shenmue II DC.

i love the scent of fresh electronics. Another good smell is fresh cards, like baseball, pokemon, etc.

I bought a used used copy of Neo Cup 98 in a game store in London, brought it to the hotel, opened it... And almost passed out when the smell of Chinese food struck me.

The smell you refer to doesn't strike me as sensual. For me, it's more like "intoxicating.";)

While driving home from the store with a new Genesis game, (back in the day) my friend & I would practically fight over who got to take the shrink wrap off. Next, we would take out the game manual, open it up & smell the inside of the pages. Odd behavior? Maybe, but it still smelled good. For some reason todays game manuals don't have the same smell as the old Genesis games used to have. Maybe they use different ink & paper nowadays, or I'm just losing my sense of smell.

That smell is the gas ozone. Or O3 if you prefer. All electronic devices emit that smell, as it's the electricity that is the catalyst in joining the three Oxygen molicules together. ;)

You get light-headed after smelling it because it smothers brain cells...

I always do a smell test when buying a used game.

I won't buy it if they smell smokey.

I bought a replacement Xbox a week or so ago. It smelled...big.

Hahaha...the only smell I've noticed really is brand new XBox games...must be that toxic green plastic...

Maybe you should all worry about why your ass smells so bad, not what your new Virtual Boy smells like.

I admit it. I smell new games when I get them. Nothing like factory freshness.

I'll sometimes sniff new cds, so I guess I've smelt some games over time :)
The only thing I find weird is that he remembered what the Snes and NES smelled like, and that the GC smelled the same. You got a hell of an olfactory memory!

... I've never purposely smelt a new game/accessory...

and I'm very suprised by the number of people who are admitting to this

Thanks. It's one of those things where I can almost visualize (er.. olfactorize?) the scent of the NES/SNES, but I always come up a little short. I'd know it if I smelled it again, though (hence the GC story).

And to those who are trying to poop on the party... it's not like we're smelling hairy, sweat-covered crotches... they're just video games. Some people who like their new cars like the new car smell. Some people who like games like the new game smell. I don't sit around and huff the things while sighing "oooohhh yeaaaahhh...". Just a brief sniff before it finds its way to its respective console for the maiden voyage.

Video game sniffers are slightly above those used panty sniffers in terms of weirdness.

Green, that scratch and sniff ad campaign did indeed rule. Ironically, that kind of "mature" shit would probably help the game sell like hotcakes in today's gaming market. Nintendo should re-release it on the GBA to test that theory.

Never done this on purpose, thankfully.

However, whenever I crack open a new video game console or piece of computer hardware, its hard to avoid the many smells emanating from the plastics, soldered electronic components, cardboard, & styrofoam. I don't get a hard-on for more though.

I'm not a full-time videogame smeller, but I do dabble in the sniffing occasionally. If the nostalgic aroma tends to waft into my nostrils, I'll lean down for more.

I used to do this, both with games and action figures. Then I found out I was sniffing the fumes from the manufactuing process.

I quit huffing that smell after I almost failed Algebra.
