Cool revalation I had while playing Ico

All this time I've been saying I didn't think the PS2 had a low res mode. I thought this doomed all retro releases to be filtered into high res. Well, I just got Ico, and the whole game is in honest to goodness low res, scan lines and all. :) So, there's hope for an un-molested Metal Slug 3 after all! Now, we just have to hope that Playmore decides to spend the money to make the tiles and sprites fit in the PS2's low res mode (that I am assuming is slightly different than the Neo's resolution). Unfortunatly, it is much cheaper to just make an emulator and filter it all into high res, but we'll see. At least I have hope now.

Cool, though do you really expect Playmore to utilize it?

The revelation I had while playing ICO, however, was that my Jap "Playstation the Best" re-release has all the extras that the PAL version got, including multiplayer.

There is a multi-player Ico?

Well, when you beat the Pal/Jap re-release, player 2 can control Yorda. Not exactly an incredible feature, but it's pretty fun. You can also make Yorda's subtitles be in English or Japanese (depending on which version you own), and there are supposedly some extra items. Not sure about that last one. Also, the PAL/Jap re-release has some very small modifications to a couple of game's rooms.

How much of the game can possibly be left when Yorda is under human controll? The game pretty much is leading her around. I guess you still have to slide the boxes around for her and pull her up ledges and whatever...

Tain: The two-player feature is not available for the North American version. Towards the beginning of your sentence, you almost imply that people can...

Just messing with you, but this was one of my two complaints about Ico (the other being the over-used crappy fighting). And haven't you ever played Sky Gunner? The US version (maybe European as well) comes with a selectable low-res mode. I always wondered how it would be if Sony's occasional gems could be redone for one of the other systems, since the PS2 couldn't handle Ico or Sky Gunner.

Best thing about ICO = shows off potential low res mode for MS3. :evil:

You could have chimed in any of the 20,000 I posted complaining about the apparent lack of low res on the PS2. :D

Darnit, I'm upset now that my Namco Museum PS2 is not low res like it's (superior) PS 1 little brother. No TATE mode either. :(

I didn't notice Ico being particularly low-res... but anyway, what about the rendition of Gradius III seen in Gradius III & IV? That was low-res, no? And 2D to boot.

Which would be cool for the MS3 port, no doubt, but if SNK/Playmore didn't bother to run half their DC ports in low-res, it doesn't leave me with much hope that they would do so on the PS2.

Can anyone who has played the PS2 KOF2K tell whether it's running in hi-res or low-res mode?

Frontal-lit, to be exact, which is a notable difference from a backlit handheld. Which is to say it has a light that can be shut on/off.

If emulators on a PC can emulate scanlines, I wouldn't think it'd be that hard to do it on a modern console.

Emulated scanlines look like S$&*#t. Even at 1600 X 1200 24 bit color.

Ico is such a good experience, that said, I only played trough it once. I guess its one of those games that I talk and think about more than I actually play. Might pick it up another copy since it only around 27$ (and thats a bloody steal in this country *sigh*).

So about Gradius III... is that not a true low-res mode?

I've never played Gradius III. Maybe someone out there with a copy and a 32 inch TV could test it out and report if there are scan lines.

I will do just that with the office copy (Japanese version) today. Will let you know. I believe it IS low-res, though.

That said, maybe I'm misunderstanding your query. If I'm not mistaken, high-res (640x480) games that run in interlaced mode still have scanlines... right?

Yes. This thread doesn't make any sense.

Yes, high res interlaced does have scan lines, but not the black solid visible unwavering scan lines that low res games have on a 32 inch screen. If you don't know what that looks like, go back and play some more 16 bit. :D

The PAL (EU) version of Ico came out quite a while ago. I wouldn't attempt playing it on a modded NTSC system, though. Unless you have a PAL PS2 and a reliable PAL - NTSC video conversion system, you probably won't be able to see what's going on in-game.
