The GameFan Tavern celebrates it's 5th year of existence!

I was thinking about where to start.

Probably from when this all began. As many people who are here visit chat they sometimes see a room called #GF_Tavern and for the most part think nothing of it or pop in and usually see a bunch of guys talking about life or gaming stuff in general.

This chatroom is none other than Gamefan Online's IRC Chatroom. Of course with Gamefan being long gone and a sad memory of better times, The chatters *myself inculded* who made up that room decided to keep the name alive even after GFO left us out in the cold.

I originally came to the #GF_Tavern from Sega's Server a long, long time ago. I had met and made a lot of great friends & even met a few members from there IRL so to say this chatroom hasn't had an effect on my life would be a lie.

This room sadly enough has bounced from many places but finally settled down at Chat Solutions which of course the #GameGo! chatroom is also linked to.

We have had a lot of people leave, move on, and visit so the userbase has been static at best but, the main people who visited chat have stayed and more or less made it as one of the better social hubs on the server for those who are not only gamers but, people.

So I'm making this thread in rememberance that come this May this channel will have truly survived the test of time and outlasted not only Gamefan but GameGo! as well.

This channel of course has birthed many websites such as PSi, TNL, Jasonrivera.com, Pimp Productions, and even got ECM his job at Gamefan.

So with this in mind I feel now more than ever that the Tavern is truly one of the most unique IRC channels on the net. One thing a lot of are here is tightknit as friends so a lot of older members have Zero tolerance for stupidasses or overzealous fanboyism.

Of course with a chatroom we have had founders here come and go from guys like Shidoshi, Lanlord, Racy, BinaryTree, Kenshin to finally Me, MrWhiteFolks & MetalSlug.

I would like to say that the #GF_Tavern not only opened my horizons on the net but saved, me from a very dull existence and allowed me to even have the honor of working here and on other sites with reviews, articles & previews.

In closing I would like to thank everyone who I met there for being a part of the #GF_Tavern.

I guess some wounds will never truly heal but this of course is probably what makes up the tavern more than anything.:lol:

I wish I could say I was with #GF_Tavern from the start but alas, I've only been in the Tavern for 2 years, and what an interesting 2 years.

#GF_Tavern shaped my persona on the internet, and actually helped me to put it in the right perspective. When the room first came to my server, I was arrogant, took things wayyy too seriously, and interfered where I should not have. During that time, I caused a lot of headaches, to the point that the channel temporarily split in two for 4 months.

Finally, I was able to take the 12" dildo out my ass and realized that it's only the internet, no more, no less. Once I realized that, i regained peace with myself and with nearly everyone in #GF_Tavern. In April '00, I thought the room was an attrocity and vowed to stay out of it. But now 2 years later, I can't imagine my network without the channel. I can say that if #GF_Tavern was the only channel there, I'd still be quite content. I've made so many friends there.. Jason, Matt, Derek, Chris, Rob, John, Mark, James, Smoo, etc etc etc

It's funny, every once in a while I hear someone say "this channel will be dead in 6 months or a year" .. but yet months keep passing with no such signs. Here's to another 5 years, #GF_Tavern.. *holds up pepsi can*

anyhoo, from me goin off on bahn, kenshin, a good 2/3rds of the gamepro chat, and to me goin off on ecm, it's been one hell of a ride. back in the day when we'd break down "deep" meaningful topics like "yo nigga, which fighting game bitch is the hottest?" or "man, why the fuck haven't they made a sequel to RcR or remade it on GBC?" and have hours of fun talking shit about each other because sega/sony/nintendo/namco/capcom/snk were the best, it's been the shit the whole way thru.

it's badass to go there and jump in some shit and not have to worry bout nancy boys bitching because they're some kind of passive agressive nerd otaku fan of some shitty game, you just go in and start blastin your opinion off at peeps and get down to the bare reasons as to why a game actually kicks ass or why it totally eats dick.

do we piss each other off? hells the fuck yeah. do we get along? like one big short bus riding family of (dare i say it?) original hardcore bastards. none of this "sausage" or "uber" or "~hardcore~" crap the kids nowadays xcopy from the eds at gf/gg!, we were(and still ARE) the true meaning of it.

we dont get tired of games, we dont get worn out of the 'net' and it's 'users'...we just give them shit, kick em in the balls and tell em to shut the fuck up and get back on with havin a blast.

The Tavern, what can I say?
If you don't know about what GF_Tavern has done, all you need do is look at the website you're currently on now, as The Next Level WOULD NOT exist had it not been for the #GF_Tavern. Quick history lesson:

Back in the olden days TNL was called GameNET, and before that it was BAHNzone (how's that for ego, eh, Chris). Some Canadian guys named Steve Jeffery and Tristan Kernick and some guy who lived in the middle of some trees somewhere, Jeremy Dunham, created Playstation Interactive and 64i. Not to be outdone, Bahn ripped them off and created GameNET. ^_~

This led to site war and TNL outlived PSi when we simply felt like not doing it anymore because it wasn't fun. Eventually we created JasonRivera.com and that was that.

None of that would have happened without the #GF_Tavern. But it extends further than just making websites and the GameFan legacy. Jeremy Dunham will be marrying my sister, Alexis whom he met via #GF_Tavern. That's a huge impact on my personal life. Steve Jeffery and Tristan Kernick are two of the coolest guys I know and we've met in real life and had one hell of a time. I remember spending all night just talking to these guys - because they were interesting characters - I stood up until I fell asleep mumbling something about how Ulysses is in Heaven (I wonder if Makaze and Panzer remember that).

Then you've got people I've never met in real life but just click with, like Randerson, and DH. It's a shame SOME PEOPLE *cough*Bahn*hack*Kenshin* can't bring themselves to come in here anymore; if they did not all of us would execute them - and those guys were some of the first people in the Tavern, too, and they know it.

Sure we've had the dark ages and bad times occur; who doesn't have that, in ANYTHING? But the fact of the matter is five years is a long time to put up with Ven's shit. (Ven, I beat you because I love you, kind of like Ike Turner). Anyway, if you're part of this site, GameGo, or never been before, it's a good time to get acquainted with the #GF_Tavern because frankly if it hadn't been, you would not be reading THIS site right now.

Since I felt I needed to do my part, check outJasonRivera.com's #GF_Tavern Page where I have a java chat to the room, profiles that I will be posting for all taverners that would like to get involved (send your pictures/profiles to jasonrivera@jasonrivera.com ) and a #GF_Tavern specific forum as well. It's been a pretty crazy five years, but here's hoping for five more...

I first came to the Tavern in June of '98, i was 14 years old then. I gotta say, i probably should have been banned a lot of times for saying some really stupid things (heck, i should probably be banned now for saying some really stupid things...).

What i once though of as a way to kill time while babysitting has turned into a second home of sorts for me. Even if i do seem to be the least noticed Taverner(except by from Rob...)the Tavern is a place where i can always turn to to talk to anyone about anything (really, anything. i had a conversation about butt-shaving not too long ago...) at anytime.

It's almost like a second family, just a lot more relaxed, and a helluva lot more open *cough* Rob *cough*. I dont know what kind of a person i would be today if i didn't have the Tavern always there, i don't know if i would think about things the same way at all.

Well, at any rate, i'm glad to have been a part of such a unique (crazy) group, and i dont have any plans to leave, ever.

Wow, it's almost been 5 years already, where does the time go? I started chatting in the Tavern since the end of it's first week at the age of 14, and have been a continuous visitor almost the entire time (took a 5 month break durring fall/winter of 98/99) and have seen it progress or regress into what it is today. I've seen people come and go, people getting lost in the server jumps, and people getting fed up with it all and just plain leaving the room. Yet we still manage to survive, for this we should be proud. If you convert the internet years into real years, we're like that 240 year old oak tree in the backyard of some blue-haired old woman that George Washington lost his virginity under and is considered a historical landmark, but only ex-cons and senior citizens ever find the time to look at it.

If any chatroom is deserving of a celebration it's the Tavern, I've calculated my time spent there and concluded that I have dedicated approximately 1,600 hours there, which is almost 2 years of sitting infront of a screen watching people yell at eachother about games, porn, and stupid internet trends like "All Your Base" and Kidblount. Sure, that means I have no life, but I never said I did, but there's that special quality the room has that brings me back time and time again, oh! can't forget the free porn passes too.

So that's all I have to say really, well, I guess I should say something negative about the Tavern to not look like some used car salesman so here goes: I hate the tavern for sucking up my time and causing me to miss the social developmental periods in my life where I should have been out with friends learning how to get women drunk to watch them make out with their female friends, now I'm 4-5 years behind the rest of the gang :mad: thanks a lot!!! Anyway, live long and prosper GF_Tavern.
