If I tried to go into exactly everything that made the Tav special and talk about everyone who's made things so much different for my life, it'd wind up as a book. Honestly, all of the Tav homies made me realize that there are people out there who love games as much as I do, and are wildly and enjoyably different from each other. Before, I had the mindset that all 'true' gamers had some sort of same personality. Thank goodness they don't.

Anywho, thanks for all the years of chatting and here's to another 5 years of the Tav dominance :D

Anyways... I don't know what to say really. The Tavern has been a big part of me. I've met lots of cool and some not so cool people, but it's always been amusing or at the very least, occupying. Who can forget the endless server hopping, our battle with #pokemasters, or the absolutely *fantastic* power struggles? Remember the Tavern splitting in two or completely up-and-moving behind the various founders' backs? Viva la revolution! Fight the oppression, etc... I'm not sure who won in the end, but at least things have settled down... for the time being. It's amazing how even through all the bullshit, we - a relatively small group of people from all over the world - have managed to stick together for the pure enjoyment of each other's company and conversation. It's a common bond that runs far deeper than a website or magazine.
Friendships have been created, hatred has been spawned, and babies have been made (okay, maybe not yet...) over the little IRC (and even, *gasp* java!) community that refused die. Sometimes we dwindle, and we've all had our doubts, but at this point, I could see the Tavern existing in some form or another (perhaps various forms) several years into the future...

Remember when BT de-regged the whole Tavern? That was great, I *still* think he was the best founder.

Remember Benjamin being a dick? In my head he looked like that Dr. Claw guy from Inspector Gadget, only with a keyboard where every button was marked "K-LINE!"

Remember when Randerson was a similarly power-hungry asshole? Then he let the raging fag demon out and he was cool again. He even sent me a bunch of Depeche Mode stuff for free. Rob rules.

I assumed LANlord was a robot most of the time.

Remember PSi? Remember XEOSPHERE? What the fuck was that about? (subconscious plug- http://www.jasonrivera.com)

Remember Colossus? CloudStrife? koRny? BleepGGE? (The latter had better grammar skills, but I assure you that she was no more intelligent than the first three.)

Remember that time Aurelis sold you a really great deal on that propane tank? Okay, me neither.

We've all changed, grown, and matured. Some of us have even touched boobies. I've changed. Whether the Tavern had much of a direct role in the lives of anyone is irrelevant... It has acted as a fantastic vehicle for - fuck that - WE have been an amazing group of people. So, here's to the next... five years. And many more to come after that.

Holy shit. 5 years already. Even though I can't claim to have been there since day one, I've been here for quite a while (since September/October 97).

I was only 15 at that time. As a kid, I acted pretty stupidly sometimes. But hey, some guys act (or acted) far worse for their age, so I wasn't too bad. ;)
I guess my biggest fault was that I wanted to argue too much about things that really didn't matter. But they were wrong dammit! :evil:

Anyway, on to the rambling... sorry if it's a bit messed up, I'm usually more coherent than that. But as BK told me, "this is special" or something. And also the fact that IE crashed while I tried to post the first time didn't help. But nevermind that. And be warned that almost all the previous posts are far funnier than mine. I just suck at being funny. :(


I remember staying mad at Knight for a damn long time because he had been a jerk (for absolutely no good reason) to a friend I had brought there. After that I found every reason to hate him, heh... ouch. Well, it's too long ago for me to still care now. Still, that was mean. Knight, I mean. Not me. I'm never mean. Never. Well. Okay, sometimes. But only to idiots. They deserve it. Yeah.

I remember in the first few days that I came, there was this ongoing inside joke about "lesbian hotdogs". I wanted to know what it was all about, because well, it seemed funny enough, but whenever I asked, people always told me to "ask Mousse" (now known as Steve/Panzer). But being relatively unlikely I could never get online at the same time as him. And when I did see him, well, he tried explaining it, but I never made much sense of it. Actually, I think he did tell me but I forgot. Damn.
Anyway. I remember breaking into an argument with Steve about I don't know what (ah, the memories). At first I didn't like him all that much. Well I didn't dislike him either, but he seemed all so popular and I was wondering why, he didn't seem all that cool to me. Well, he had beaten me in my first trivia, by like one point (and I had lost cuz I had been disconnected). My first gaming trivia and I nearly beat the master Mousse. Wow. Now I probably couldn't get one point.

But then one day, he mentioned Testament (the thrash metal band). I said "Testament rocks", he proposed to me, and we've been cool ever since.
Of course, he likes Megadeth (no one's perfect). But he lended me Panzer Dragoon Saga. So that means... without the Tavern, I wouldn't have borrowed Panzer Dragoon Saga from Steve, so I would have never played it. So in conclusion, coming there was a good thing! :) Although he was SUPPOSED to sell it to me, however heXer had to borrow it first, and that idiot lost it! AAARGH! :mad: Fuck you Tristan, for that I'll never forgive you.

I remember thinking that Aurelis was a girl, too. I dunno, that name reminded me of some book character named Auril, which was a girl, and so the notion stuck.

But, I hosted a few game trivias for a while (won a few of them too :) when Makaze wasn't playing, of course... though I did beat him once, mwahahaha. Anyway, when I hosted one, I noticed that Aurelis was kicking ass. And that actually (and ironically) gave me the hint that he was a guy, because well, except for me (and I say that with absolutely no bragging intent) no female Taverner was ever really that knowledgeable about games, especially old ones.

I remember a lot of people thinking I was a guy. Or that I had gotten my name from Darkstalkers. Or people that called me "Morr" and I would throw a fit, and ask them to call me Morrigan or just Morri, because well, quite frankly "Morr" is just... ugly. Ironically the latter two irritated me far more than the first one. Probably because I'm so gender-neutral that it's easy to just assume I'm a guy. When I say gender-neutral, I mean not giggling and acting "girly" and like those stereotypical anime chicks that Ven loves so much that really don't exist in real life. (By the way, Ven isn't just insane or dumb, he's also very delusional)

Speaking of insane, dumb and delusional, of course I remember Bleep. I was among the first to openly bash her, and got a lot of shit for it at first (eventually they all agreed with me, though, but of course never apologized for bashing me for bashing Bleep. But that's okay, they probably just forgot ;) ). Like a dog, even though I demolished her, she came back the next day, "Hi Morri!! ^__^ <:) What's up? ^__~". Eventually she got the hint, but it took her long enough.

I'm probably one of the only Taverner who never had a problem with Kenshin. Weird, considering everyone thought I was such a bitch that I would only get along with those who like metal, or something (which is not true, but a persistent reputation I have, thanks to ah... Ven? probably). But no, Kenshin never bothered me. And neither did BinaryTree.

I'm probably one of the only ones who remember Bastion (first guy I ever "met" on the net, dunno what's up with him though, but I think he's still around).
Or Zenogaist-Zero. Whatever happened to that guy anyway? He was from my area (Montreal), and I know he had some self-esteem problems and he was seriously depressed, and one day he just... disappeared. He could even be dead (fucking creepy). I hope not. I actually kind of miss him. Damn, it's been so long. Only Taverner I ever talked to the phone with (only once).

Oh yeah... I'd like to point out, before someone else does, that I'm the only female that ever stayed that long. Others have come and go, and some come sometimes, but I dunno why because they're not gamers, just whores (well, okay that explain it).

Wow, man. How long ago was it that I first came here? Two years now?

I knew very little of #gf_tavern's existance, knowing only what little Kenshin cared to share with the #perfect-zero folk. One day, out of blind curiousity, I went into the little webspace.

Few days pass now that I don't at least pop onto chat-solutions to go to the Tav. I have laughed a many laugh, joined in the crusades against the newbies, and grown agitated at the political bitching and whining over Op status. I've had you bastards do my homework for me and I've played some of you in some games. I've seen a lot of you change over my two years here, for better or for worse, but needless to say, I would be hard pressed to ever forget about this place for the rest of my life.

Thanks for the memories... and "re-education." Here's to five more years, eh?

I almost forgot all about King! I haven't seen that guy in ages. He was big fan of the lesbian hotdogs, actually. Him, that chick Zero, Drunken Samuri, MCREN, Mishima, Kriller and I formed the first, and possibly only exclusive Tavern club back when it first opened. I wonder what happened to some of those guys.

Kriller started Animegamer, the first gaming website to spawn from GF_Tavern readers. Shidoshi, Tristan, Zero and I wrote for it. Tristan and I wanting more control over the site, led to us creating Playstation Interactive because we thought everyone else sucked(possibly the only gaming website ever formed and fueled out of vengeance!). I hope some of those guys eventually find the Tavern again.

I forgot about Morri and I disliking each other. It's funny how you can chat with someone for an hour and not like them, but give them time and they really grow on you. Morri's the coolest. She's the only female online who I've ever jokingly proposed to, who wasn't a camwhore named Snow.

There's a ton of memorable events from the tavern. Lots of good feuds too. I remember coming home from school back in '97 and being determined to make Ali look bad.

I remember the PSi/TNL war which lasted years. Hell, TNL taverners and PSi taverners would dislike each other solely for that reason. There's STILL bad blood sometimes! Now thats a war.

I remember Ben hosting the Tavern, and being a dick about it. I was determined not to let him make the rules. But he lightened up, and became ultra-cool, and his server is one of the reasons that the tavern probably still exists to this day.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have nothing against anyone on PSi - and I've been known many times to say outright that I missed you guys. There really aren't many other sites that were on the level that site was - I honestly feel it was ahead of its time! :)

Man, I can't even remember when I stumbled into GF_Tavern. I do remember that everyone made fun of me for about a month, as we all do with new people. So many memories... Even though I am the taverner that always seems to be raped by Rob, and be the least noticed (much like someone), you guys can all bite my ass, I'll take any of you on in soul calibur.

Hmm.... 5 years of this place. Doesn't seem like it at all. Although I do remember first coming around and being a dumbass way back when the chat first opened. I never expected to stick around for the long haul, but I suppose I am glad I did.

So much stuff has happened, that I don't know where to begin. So I will see if I can sum it up in a brief post.

I used to be a hardcore gamer. Being able to talk amongst other gamers 24/7 anytime I wanted to just seemed too good to be true. But alas.. That was the initial reason I came to the channel. Over time that all changed when, rather than just talking about games, we all started to evolve into "people" to each other as opposed to "text". Seemed strange at first, to genuinely care about someone you've never met, probably never will meet, but definitely someone that has influenced or impacted your life till the day you die.

I know that I've been decent to some, a dick to others, bridges burned and rebuilt over time. As easy as one might think it can be to write off a "chat room" with the click of a mouse and never look back? After 5 years of talking amongst everyone here.... It is nigh impossible. So all I want to do is thank the masses of #GF_Tavern. We're still around without the magazine, we've been through some fucked up shit. We've all shared real life experiences with each other, no different than if opening up to a lifelong friend whom you might hang with on the weekends.

Good and bad memories alike... Thanks go to all.

Anyways...

There's a brutal truth about me and the Tavern, that BonusKun's very aware of. There are people that claim to be a part of this place, or who come in regularly, that I would like to see banned. It's not many, actually. It takes a WHOLE lot to trip that line, with me.

But I have little tolerance for women that come into the Tavern, treating the user list like AIM, looking for their priv. message boy-toy. And there's far too many of them. This sadly applies to almost all women that come in. It's probably a psychological need (read: defect) in women.

And I have no tolerance for socially-inept anime fans, with warped, twisted egos. It seems like these types take FIVE times as long as normal human beings to grow up, if they EVER do. And no, Kenshin's not in this. Like I said, it takes a LOT to trip that line.

But they come in. And they stick around. And they run their mouths. And if I do anything about them, I'm probably stepping on someone's toes.

That's the rub of it. Five years, and I still have to deal with people that drive me up a wall in the Tavern. I think I've been in the Tavern long enough to NOT have to put up with that shit. But some of the people I like in there have a NEED to drag people from EITHER category into the Tavern, then defend their position (much like a flag or castle in a multiplayer game.)

That's always been the problem. And I'm eternally tired of it, because once one of these cretins starts talking, the outcome is inevitable. They will eventually piss everyone off, get in a big fight, and cause stupid turmoil. From then on, when they come in, they will be coming in for the sole purpose of starting a fight, or causing trouble.

And when they sit there and don't talk, or just private message everyone, I think of what will eventually happen. They will talk, and the above process will occur.

And I swear, I'm the only one that sees it. But people keep on bringin' 'em in. That, or they keep showing up. Why? Because they're so pathetically lonely/outcast. They crave, no, LUST for human attention, yet don't know how to interact without PISSING EVERYONE OFF. They almost always have something to prove, and are unhappy when the "point" isn't "proven."

Example 1 - The "I don't really like that, but you're going to talk about it until I'm angry" routine.

Consider the "form of entertainment" to be an aberrant interest that is generally frowned upon, or better yet, taken to excesses. Furry pornography, excessive playing of DDR games, or obscure videogaming are good substitutes.

I think the Tavern could do without this crap. I have ALWAYS thought this, to no avail. I DO believe these people have a right to exist, chat, and do their shit...but that doesn't mean I have to like it. It's much like Penny-Arcade's stance on furry porn, which pissed off a load of inept folk. It's become a taboo to say "I don't like it, stop invading my personal space." I think I have a virtual "personal space" online, while in the Tavern. I'm tired of it being invaded.

But I can't say jack when these people are brought in by others. I do think it's inconsiderate, especially when they tell me their goal is for me to "like" this person. I most certainly will not. If I was in their shoes, I would talk to this person over ICQ, AIM, or in some other chat. But no, it HAS to be the Tavern, and it's MY fault for being intolerant. And besides, if I don't like it, I can "just use ignore."

That "use ignore" tripe is a total crock of shit. I'm tired of hearing it. The analogy doesn't hold up. If someone comes into MY party, even if it's open to the public, and I don't like their behavior, I don't "turn on ignore." They will be LEAVING, because I can't be sure that everyone else at the party is "turning on ignore."

Anyway, that's it. I hope the message has gotten through to those of you responsible. And the same thing applies to this thread. I was hoping it would be about the people in the Tavern, and wouldn't include people that were practically EXILED for their behavior. But they show up, like maggots on a piece of rotting meat.

And no, Kenshin and Morrigan are not a part of this. I actually don't have much of a problem with either of them. They just don't like me. They hold some grudges. I don't. But I respect where they're coming from.

One last thing. There's a third group that really pisses me off: power-tripping idiots that stumble upon a problem, pretend to know everything about it, then provide poor, misguided arbitration. These people are terribly full of themselves, and hide behind a facade of "objectivity" in "everyone's best interests." Not much can be done about these folks. It just annoys me when they do things in the name of "justice" and "fairness." Nothing could be more far from the truth, when it's a dumb, pissy kid looking to please the majority. Just someone getting their jollies by setting off their yes men, I suppose.

Not just wanted me banned, I have been banned MANY times. I dont really care though. I can piss people off sometimes, everyone can. But Ven is so preachy that its ridiculous. His example problem talking about "(form of entertainment)" is something I have seen him do at times. I did no such thing with the J-Pop, Red. I was pissed because people sit around doing NOTHING, and when I offer to send an mp3, people say no. For what reason? Is the mp3 going to kill you? Are you using your bandwidth? Are you going to LEAVE in the next 10 minutes? No to all three.

You didn't want to watch "that" anime until someone BESIDES me started saying it was good. I'm generally offended by the way you consider my opinion shit, 24-7. The Tavern's "superficial comedic roundtable" has gotten old. Especially since, like it was mentioned here, I'm apparently "hated" in some capacity.

We're all people, and people are different. I'm not even going to bother finishing that one - you know how it is. From the things in history books, to the classrooms they're issued to, to the IRC channels that the students go home and spend their time in, it's the same shit over and over again. Ok, you want to know why the tavern has been around for 5 years? It's simple. We care about each other. True, we could care less about some people, but for the most part the people who come in regularly are people we care about.

When Sept 11 occurred, I watched the TV for a few minutes after I found out and then went to my computer and got online to see if everybody was ok. Odd thing to do perhaps, but it was reasuring to know that Randerson and other folks were online, watching the news and quietly talking about it. (quietly in the sense that it we would watch the news and then come back to the chat for a bit and say a word or two.)

You're absolutely right, Bahn. We had some good competition, but it's long over. Hell, I think our rivalry made all of us better from a creative standpoint, even if we were all acting like dicks at the time.

Ven, I'm a big fan of the shock value rants/jokes. The human factor is why I frequent the Tavern. It's like a gathering of unique and interesting people, who you can turn off whenever you want. You guys are friends on demand.

Hell, I think it's super cool that we can't go an entire message board thread without arguments breaking out. If the Tavern was a super happy fun love fest, it would have gotten too boring by now.

Has it been that long ? Wow. I've only been around for four of the five years and have a warm fuzzy feeling when it comes to the tavern and it's users. At first it opened the world of import gameing to me ( saturn is still a 2D beast ), but then as I started to make friends it became more of a second home.
I can rememebr spending many O hours in the tavern chatting away about this game or that, much to the dismay of my now defunct wife =). What I rememebr most is Rob fighting with everyone else in the tavern except a few of us. LOL. I am supprized I kept up with all the server jumps. I have chatted long into the night with some of you and will probabaly always rememeber you. A few names do stick out in my memory. While I dont stop by much anymore, I do make it a point to once in a while. Here's to it *toast the tavern* Thanks everyone.

Me defending him has more to do with it being my belief that it's the right thing to do, than if I know him or not.

It's my opinion that most people have a problem with you because of the way you act, and the way you have acted for the past 5 years if not longer.
Many of the people that read gamefan and the things you work on now think you have a great job. One thing that ticks a lot of people off about that is that in comparison to the rest of the gamefan staff, you were probably the most depressive and wussy acting of all of them. You always seemed to have some emotional turmoil that lay underneath just about everything you did.

Why would that bother others if you were having a problem you may ask. It goes back to what I started out saying in the first place, many people think you have a great job. So most just can't see how you could always seem so unhappy, and thus think you didn't deserve the job.

Perhaps we are all being assholes for not understanding what ever crisis that was occurring in your life. But it should also be mentioned you never made a effort to explain why you seemed the way you did, nor tried hard enough to hide it if you didn't feel it should be known.

Another thing that bothers a lot of people is the way you like to ride the anime fanboy fence. It aggravates a lot of people to read several articles written by you that would all most make you seemed upsest with the said thing of the article, for you to only later act as if anime or gaming had nothing to do with your life. You spend a great deal of time promoting niche nerdy genres of things, and then later pull a complete 180 and act like it amounts to almost nill in your life. You constantly doing this makes you come off two-faced and unreliable in the reviews and articles you write. Just exactly how much faith can be placed in the review of someone who acts like the thing as a hole really doesn't matter to him? I wouldn't want a DR. who didn't care about medicine looking at me or would I want to leave children with a person who didn't care about kids.

How about I both tell you two to have a nice cup of shut the fuck up and quit turning your argument onto this thread.

Everyone seems really tight together and such.
I am on IRC chat alot at a neo geo room, and i have been to GF tavern a few times.
Once i was in and i talked for a while then left, it was a good disscution too. I think it was about neo geo.
But other times i was just kicked or banned for no reason.
But i understand its a really tight community and such, so its understandable, and i never held a grudge or anything.
But after i read the thread i just wanted to say that thats awesome that it has been going for 5 years.
and if i go in GF tavern please dont ban me when i enter.
But i just wanted to say that is cool that its been going so long.
And this thread was a really good read if i must say so myself.
