I have that habit with RPGs a lot too. I'm still pissed that I got to the last boss in Xenogears, too weak to take him out, too pissed to try going back.
The last boss in Xenogears is certainly tough, but I think beating it has more to do with the order you send your guys out and the tactics you use against the spheres rather than your levels. It took me 2 or 3 tries, but once I figured out how to tell which spheres were which bosses, who I needed to use to fight them and who to hold back, and what to do against them, it wasn't so bad. Just remember to take out all the spheres, or the final boss will fry yo' azz.

Batman was a tough game, but nothing really prepared you for Joker. Everything else in that game took only one life bar... all of a sudden, Joker makes you his bitch by taking 2 or 3 per hit. The day I beat that game, I felt it was like one of my greatest life accomplishments.
Joker's actually dead easy - stand on his cane, and all his shots will go behind you. Memorize where the lightning appears, and you should be able to take him out without getting touched.
