Is there a Mario timeline?

I was just sitting here thinking about the Mario games and a thought struck me, is there any sort of time line here?

I think the secret is with Yoshi. In Super Mario World Yoshi is pretty serious, makes minimal deeper sounds. And of course Yoshi's Island is a game that takes place in the past, and yoshi has a much younger feel. Same with Sunshine, Yoshi is all young again. And when you find him in Mario 64 he looks older.

Also in 3 arn't all the bosses Bowers kids? So he has like 8 kids in 3, and only one in Sunshine?

So the way I see it is that Yoshi's Island is the earliest game, and Mario 64 is the most recent in terms of Timeline. But who knows, Miyamoto more then likely has no clue either.

I don't think anyone at Nintendo really considered any sort of timeline until Yoshi's Island.

It's definitely not something I think about since the games have minimal story to them.

There is more than one "Yoshi." I.E. they are a race. An older one could co-exist with a younger one. Thusly, the "timeline" becomes much more unintellaganble and convoluted. ;)

So we are to assume that in games 1-3 Mario is somewhere where Yoshis don't live or exist? Makes you wonder if mario is going into different dimensions, he should be carefull which pipe he goes down. He somehow got back to earth in the Mario Is Missing games.

Mario is quite the Nomad me thinks.

But Sunshine still might be the most recent, considering Bowsers growth. He was pretty damn big in 64 and then HUGE in Sunshine.

Who knows, maybe someday this will all be clear.

id say yoshi's island is the first obviously and then probably Sunshine is the last

then you have 1 -3 and world imbetween

I think that SMB III might be the last game, chronoligically, due to the Koopa kids.
Yoshi's Island would be the first chronologically due to baby Mario.
Sunshine might take place before III, but only if my theory can hold water. And since this involves a Mario storyline, that probably won't happen.

Yeah, but just because Yoshi is a race doesn't mean there isn't one Yoshi. Is there a single main character Yoshi or is any Yoshi you ever see with Mario just a random one?

well in Yoshi's island its a bunch of random ones (theres all kinds of colors of yoshis remember)

maybe in World 64 and Sunshine its one yoshi but in YOshi's island its a whole bunch of them

True. And in Mario World it makes it seem like there might be one Yoshi, yet there are still a ton of them in it. Also, in Super Mario RPG (if you want to count it towards the timeline, which I guess you would) there is an island of Yoshis, and there is also one Yoshi, so I don't know.

I’m going to have to assume there is indeed a single Yoshi named Yoshi.

But Yoshis can turn different colors depending on what they eat as well though. Another monkey wrench. We know there are multiple Yoshis, its been proven. But we do not know if in Yoshis Island he is riding on the same yoshi, but its changed color due to what it has eaten.

And you would think that Bowzer would be more upset with Mario killing all of his children in Super Mario 3.

And is there a solid explanation of Wario? Maybe my memory is wrong but I don't remember any reason for his existance. If he is just some doppleganger I makes me think that someone may have cloned Mario some how or something. Hmmmm more to ponder.

in the instruction booklet and through the game they make it very clearly known that its multiple yoshi's carrying baby mario around

there are koopa kids in super mario world as well, you know. =)

i don't think anyone at nintendo thinks about this stuff.

after all, the zelda timeline is tenuous at best. miyamoto recently just said "well, each game stars a different link." so it's pretty meaningless to try and untangle it. it's not as if there's an overarching narrative.

Miyamoto is pretty crazy. I remeber reading an offcial story line in Nintendo power and that Links Awakening takes place DURING Zelda 2, in Zelda 2 when you take the raft over to the East island is when apparantly you run into the storm and land on that Island. Who knows, Mario makes less sense.

I can't stand it when people try to find continuity between games where the developers never gave continuity a second thought. There are no storyline connections. There just aren't. Mario games aren't about story.

I was just wondering is all. I thought maybe some where out there someone read something or heard something. Sorry if I got all "GameFAQs" on you. And for it to be more like Game Faqs there would have to been some responses like:

"FUKKIN MARIO! SOnic rules!"

and

"I read in GamePro..."

Dear lord, Miyamoto might just be crazy. Either that, or his line of thinking is so abstract that it will be considered cool in 20 years. The same could be said for the crazy shit by Hideo Kojima in MGS 2, but I think that will always be considered to be stupid shit. At least, by folks who aren't on cocaine, and don't work for Rolling Stone.

Inbetween each level it shows the current yoshi passing Mario off to the next yoshi.

Yeah, but according to Mario Sunshine, the color a Yoshi is depends on what fruit you give them. But then, in Mario World, it just depends on the egg color.

I think Bowser Jr. is a kid Bowser had after Mario killed all the Koopalings in Mario World. Hell, half of them fell in lava.

Just playing, I don't think there's a timeline to the Mario games either aside from Yoshi's Island.

Maybe Mario is like Link, it's not the same link, just a legend that a new character follows...I mean the amount of mario games surely would dictate that. Either that or maybe it just takes place in a certain time frame. Speaking of time lines, try figuring out the simpsons.

Someone from Super Mario Bros. Headquarters actually tried to piece together the storyline for all major Super Mario games. He got as far as Mario 64, but even though it's incomplete, it's still an interesting read.

i like to belive taht ever game.. is its own diffrent universe.. and you play in them.. and their is no connection between that last game..

how else would Lugi not be inculded in M64, and SMS... and the name change from Mario bros... to just Mario..

Not to mention the name change from Princess Toadstool to Princess Peach.
