Today, I'm buying a Turbo DUO from a friend and am new to world NEC. And I was wondering, what US games are good?
As far as I know, I will be getting Ys I & II and Bonk 1 & 2 with the system. Are there any must-have games for the DUO?

You must get the Gates of Thunder 4-in-1 cd, as well as Lords of Thunder. Dracula X is a must-have if you are willing to spend that kind of money.
Do a search for Turboduo on the gaming boards and you'll find lots of threads that can help you.
Exile 2 was always one of my favorites.
Air Zonk is pretty sweet.
Gate of Thunder/Lords of Thunder are fun.
Fighting Street is one to have, just for historical purposes.

Lords or thunder and gates of thunder are fantabulous, I really like Blazin Lazers. I have this game called Monster Lair that is pretty fun. Dracula X of course.

Doh! I just realized that if I buy this Turbo DUO stuff, I can't buy Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Air Zonk (us chip) - The only Turbo shooter I'd consider a must play. Too over the top cartoony to pass up.
Legendary Axe (us chip) - The ultimate 8-bit action game.
Parasol Stars (us chip) - Bubble Bobble with parasols. And the characters are much less unwieldy than the old dinosaurs.

I think theres a version of Space Harriers 2 for the Duo. Has anyone played it?
get Lords of Thunder before anything else IMO. It's excellent. It's also not that hard to find (assuming the market's about the same as it has been in the past).
Blazing Lazers also packs a lot of bang for the buck, one of the best hucard shooters around but quite common.
You're also not limited to just US cds, there's no territory lock out on CDs. Dracula X is a must if the price doesn't bother you. One of the few expensive games that lives up to its price tag.

xS, do you mean Space Harrier 1? Space Harrier 2 is Genesis-only.
TG16 Space Harrier was pretty good at the time, although the lack of checkerboard irritated me.
New Adventure Island is a fun title, challenging with a nice art style.
Dragon's Curse looks ancient but is a excellent adventure title.
Blazing Lasers, Super Star Soldier, and Soldier Blade all great vertical shooters.
Legendary Axe 1 and 2 are completely different games but both stand well on their own. Pretty cheap too.
And a few obscure CD imports: Cho Aniki (side-view shooter), and Pop N Magic (Bubble Bobble style action).

Galaga '90- a truly worthy update to the original.
Devil's Crush- the ultimate pinball experience. At times, it almost plays more like a shooter.

I know theres an Amstrad(or some other old computer) version, how is it?
I forgot about the computer versions of Space Harrier 2. I'm sure the Amiga version would be better than an Amstrad version but I haven't played them.
I'm almost 100% sure there's no PC Engine version of Space Harrier 2.
I used to know an awesome site that had pics of virtually every obscure version of Space Harrier.

How does it compare to original?
Space Harrier 2 was probably graphically the best console game on the market in 1989. But since the Genesis lacked hardware scaling , the game is far choppier than the arcade original. Space Harrier 2 has a much cooler and darker look to it but the gameplay in the original arcade game is better.

Just to add some more games that haven't been mentioned yet.
The Valis Series is great. Valis 4 is the best of the series IMHO, but was not released in America.
If you can get a hold of a multitap, try to pick up a Dungeon Explorer and a Bomberman game.
You guys see the update on www.pcenginefx.com ? about a new US Street Fighter type game coming to the Duo and Dreamcast?

I agree! I fucking hate those pads :mad:. My hands are left in throbbing pain after playing Winds of Thunder or Spriggan. I can't play for an extended period of time on those pads.Quote:

Oh yeah, I also nominate Dracula X. It's every bit as good as advertised.
Final Zone 2 is pretty fun and no one's mentioned it yet. I'd buy it if you come across it for a good price, it's not hard to find.
My other favorites are Gate of Thunder(+ Bomberman), Lords of Thunder, and Aero Blasters. I bought my Duo about 2 years ago and haven't been able to buy too many imports due to lack of funds, though there are so many I want. Nonetheless, I've got most of the domestic releases covered, they come pretty cheap.

NEC had the nerve to make the cords that short and then sell extension cords separately. Not to mention having to buy the Turbotap to play multiplayer games.
i dont like the 2 button duo controller the 6 button one looks decent though
and yeah the cords are way way way way short
i also Second Fighting Street and Drac X
I just have a problem with having to use a lot of pressure to keep any part of the D-pad depressed for a given period of time. This isn't bad for shooters with the ship speed on high (tap-tap gameplay), but for RPGs and adventure games, it SUCKS.Quote:

Agreed! I use controller extension cords for all my systems, anyway, so I was prepared to plop down an extra fee. Get this... when you order a new Turbo Duo from TZD.com, they don't have any original Duo pads left, so they hack a standard TurboPad with a Duo-compatible cord (which looks like a Mac perhiphrial cord of some sort). Thing is, this cord is like, 7 feet long. My Duo is far away from where I sit to play, and this hacked cord did the job fine. I'm still glad I bought an extension since I also have a real Duo Pad and the above-mentioned PCE stick.Quote:

Are the pads on the Japanese controllers any better? That white Duo RX 6-button pad looks sexy as hell. Too bad they're next-to-impossible to find.
You must get Cosmic Fantasy 2. It was showered with awards and rightfully so, a truly great RPG. To me, all the Japanese RPGs on the Duo were great. Exile and Exile 2, Dragon Slayer, Ys 1&2 and Wanderers from Ys, so much RPG greatness on that system.
Gates and Lords of Thunder are awesome. Personally, I preferred Lords but to each their own.

This game is the one reason, I own a Tg-16. If you like Advance Wars, or Shining Force style strategy games, you'll love Military Madness. One of the best games on the TG-16 chip card.

As I was reading through this thread, I too noticed that no one had mentioned Military Madness. That's simply blasphemous! I spent hundreds of hours playing this game in my youth. In fact, this is my favorite strategy game of all time (however, nostalgia may play a small role in that)!
