what game purchase did you have the highest hopes for, that bottomed out once the game entered you system...
mine, shining wisdom for the saturn...working design, camalot, zelda game play, shining in the title...i thought it was a match made in heaven (at the time)...after 10 minutes of play i never lothed for my $50 back more...
It would have to be "The Bouncer", after enjoying both Tobal No.1 and 2 I was looking foward to this game a lot... it was the biggest let down for me because I expected so much better then what it was :o
Although this one was borrowing from a friend, I'd have to place RE2 here. Especially after the hype this game got, it was like RE but not scary and placed in areas that looked like utter crap (from a design standpoint, not a "It's supposed to be in ruins!" way). The most annoying RE that seemed to have the most back-tracking, I didn't like it at all at first and it simply got worse with age. It had better voice acting then the first, but is otherwise the bastard child of the RE series to me (haven't played Gun Survivor yet, so they might get paired together from what I've heard).
Probably Black and White. That was practically what drove me to sell a shit load of game stuff to buy a good enough PC to run it, but when I finally got to play it I was like 'well damn... this isn't so cool...' and became pretty much apathetic towards it. Though after going back to it about 6 months later, I gained a better appreciation towards it.
i think i would have to go with hoshigami. i was expecting something on par with final fantasy tactics or tactics ogre, but the game was nearly unplayable.
Tekken Tag Tournament. I expected more from the first Tekken on the PS2. WWE SmackDown:Shut Your Mouth was another let-down.
Robotech Battlecry. Looks nice, but controls weren't good, didn't hold my interest even though being a fan of the series.
Gungrave.
Crazy Taxi 2. I loved the first one to death and the sequel did nothing for me. I tried to like it, but I couldn't. I think the level design was the nail in the coffin for me. It just didn't flow like the first one. As a matter of fact I just traded this in towards SimCity 4.
I agree, although I didn't hate it. It lacked the flow of the original's city, and became what seemed more like a quarter-muncher instead of the more skill-focused CT.Quote:

Dark Savior was touted by a bunch of my friends as the best game on the Saturn...after 2 hours, I still couldnt stand it.

biggest dissapointment ever, and only game besides Sword of Sodan to make me physicaly mad at its shoddyness is DaytonaUSA Dreamcast.
If they would have called it "Daytona Remix" or something, then maybe I would have given the new controlling cars a chance, but even then the front-end interface bogged the game down unbearably.
For me, it's definitely The Bouncer. I bought it on release in Japan. I had watched a few movies of it and had to play it. So I bought it without the benefit of prior reviews or impressions, just a couple of gameplay movies. I've learned from my mistakes, and I haven't bought an import game on release since then. I have to wait for at least a few impressions/reviews.
Tomb Raider for Saturn. Every mag was pimping this game (especially GameFan) and while I'll admit the first 2 or 3 levels were interesting, things quickly went downhill from there. A few months later I vowed to beat it and printed out a FAQ, and even then I couldn't get more than halfway through it.
Castlevania on N64 - The worst game in the greatest series.
Tribes 2 on the PC. Not that it was a bad game by any means, but straight out of the box it ran horribly on my PC, there were tons of problems actually connecting to servers and getting an account setup, and it seemed to enjoy crashing my system. I was viciously hyped for the game, but the first week problems kind of killed my excitement for it. I can run it now, and do have some fun with it, but it was pretty non-fun all the same.

It may be cliche but MGS2 I waited three years too play as Solid Snake again. If you played through the game with Snake as the main character I think that even with the insane plot twists this game would be as revered as the first .

Eternal Darkness - It was hyped to be the greatest horror game, but eneded up just a decent adventure title.

I think you guys are giving The Bouncer a pretty raw deal. It most certainly didn't live up to the hype. In that reguard, Squaresoft lied to all of us. It didn't do a damned thing they said it would. However, to outright pan the game simply because it wasn't what you expected?! We should be beyond that.
It was utter crap for what Square had hyped it up to be, but it was an excellent little beat'em-up which stood on it's own merrit, and it was beautiful to boot.
Not the second coming, but not as asstastic as some of you would have us believe. :D
Oh damn, I want to change my answer now. Hoshigami was definitely a big letdown for me. I was certain that this game was going to be great, but it ended up being quite a mess of a game. The battle system was needlessly complex, making the game very unapproachable. I just could not get into the game. I guess the graphics were alright, though...Quote:

Most disapppointing for me:
VC: It was like everybody and their mother was genuninely excited about this game. After two days of playing, I realized I was only playing to hear the voices and see funny or interesting things, not because I was enjoying myself. The experience was the complete opposite of GTA III (a game a couldn't stop playing).
I think most people are forgetting THE dissapointing game: Final Fantasy VIII.
I have a 3 way tie:
Armada - Could have been an Asteroids action RPG. That would have rulled. The combat sucked.
Monkey Ball 2 - What the hell happened there? Complete 180 from the original. The compleatly unessesary "start pad" at the beginning of every level was enough to piss me off. The horrible full of luck devoid of fun levels after the start pads made it worse.
Rouge Leader - Everybody said it was a fun and amazing looking game. I buy it and find a horribly boaring slow(?) flight sim that outside of one scene where the sun reflected off of a lake looked entirely mediocre.
I loved Shining Wisdom. I agree about RE2,I'm still trying to figure out why so many people say it's the best in the series. My biggest disappointment has to go to Fighting Force. I had such high hopes for this game and it still goes down in history(IMO)as the only game that had a demo disk version that ended up better then the finished product. Not to mention all the :bs: the mags were saying about this game.
P.S. Dark Savior is a mixed bag. Ultimately, I think it's a really good game,but then I think about my favorite thing about it being the word "Landstalker" on the back wall of a bar.
Sonic Adventure 2 - I loved the original and was expecting a game of the same quality which is not what I got. Worth playing for the Sonic and Shadow levels but it was overall a very lazy game. At least I had fun with it which is more than could be said about...

Sonic Adventure 2 was a horrible letdown after a spectacular 1st game. I never played past level 2. I don't care how good the rest of the game might be, that Knuckles level is just too awful to ever bother playing through.
Mario Sunshine was increadible fun that wouldn't let me go until the end. There about a dozen unforgettable "moments". Great fun. Great graphics. Spectacular old school platforming sections. Mario 64 was crap. The whole point of the game seemed to be fighting the horrible controll and not making Mario walk right off a cliff.
I really wanted to like Mario Sunshine but ultimately it was 'unforgetable' for all the wrong reasons. I literally snapped the disc in the end which is a first for me. At least Zelda is a great game.
Alas, Landstalker was the reason I was so disappointed.... Landstalker is one of my favourite ever games, and when I read about DS being like LS it was one of the main games that convinced me to buy Saturn (NiGHTS being the other).... Luckily I discovered many other Saturn games I didn't expect to like so games like Daytona and Sega Rally more than made up for it.
One day I am going to try to go back to DS with a clean slate and hope to enjoy it for what it is... but I am not too optimisitc... :\

What if you found FFVII disappointing? I was all hyped for the game since I thought FFVI was rather good...so I preordered VII and was all anticipating and it finally arrived and I found a slow, contrived, mediocre game that had good graphics and no characters.

torneko. it was an enix game with a main character from dragon warrior 4. i thought it'd be pretty interesting seein' as how i'd never played one of those random dungeon games. it was fun for about 5 hours. after about 10 hours of loosing my mind trying to play through that game and get some kind of enjoyment out of it i just gave up. the music was the only thing good about that game. i sold it for store credit. i never do that.

As my avatar suggests, I'm a huge fan of the original Power Stone, and waited anxiously for the sequal. The idea of four players seemed great but the whole party-game feel they added to it killed it for me. So dissapointing.
Metal Gear Solid 2...it was so sick when you were on the tanker, but then after that I thought it was horrible. The tanker part def. was not worth the $50.

as for me, i'd say my biggest disappointment recently was metroid fusion. i just found it frustrating for some reason, and put it down after playing like 1/3 of it. no real interest in picking it back up. i will some day, after GBA player comes out.
vampire savior (i actually touched on this in another thread). i remmeber being so excited to try the arcade unit at E3 and kept trying to like it throughout its arcade release and also on the saturn. but, for me, it never eclipsed hunter -- it never even got close.
maybe we should do a thread for games that exceeded our expectations? =)

Doom II for the GBA. It's nothing like the first Doom for GBA, which I understand was based on the Jaguar version. It actually felt and controlled like Doom on the PC. However Doom II feels totally wrong. It's just Doom II textures and enemies plastered onto a different 3d engine that Torus created.

I didn't have any issues AT ALL with the controls or camera in M64. I wish I could say the same for Maximo. The controls were very basic, not nearly as many moves as you could make your character do in M64(which is a much older game). The camera was alot worse then most 3D games because you can't move it while you're moving. To me that is a cardinal sin. If it was one of the 1st 3D games ever it would be acceptable, but in todays gaming world it is inexcusable. It did have very nice graphics though. I agree with you on Sunshine being a great game but aren't the basic controls of Mario (sans the waterpack) exactly the same as 64? they also fucked the camera up in Sunshine really badly. I don't have a problem with controlling the camera myself but it should stay where I place it and not move on its own after that. The perfect example(by far not the only one) is in the pachinko section. You pan the camera out so you can see the whole area and when you're trying to land in a precise spot the camera decides to move left or right all on its own. That is the ONLY problem I had with Sunshine, otherwise it's a great game.but still not in the league of M64.Quote:

I have a harder time explaining whats wrong with Zelda, it just didn't klick with me. I finished it once and then started a new game to get all the spiders but got bored and never picked it up again, I sold it a some time ago and have never regretted it, they will have to pry my complete Zelda ALTP from my dead hands though. I didn't have fun with it, but I'm gonna give WW a chance since I had a pretty good time with it a month ago.
But its strange, I haven't had a good time with a Nintendo game that has gone the 3d route, maybe its because I'm afraid of change in some ways and can't help to think about how much more I liked it when it was still 2d, but I feel like I gave the games a fair chance so no regrets. I have no problem with games like DMC, SH and Shenmue etc. Nedless to say I'm pretty worried about Metroid Prime.

After playing and loving every U.S.-released Final Fantasy, I thought that for some reason I'd love Kingdom Hearts. I ended up giving it to a friend of mine after getting to the Little Mermaid level and losing any urge to play the game.
Parappa the Rapper 2 was a sad follow-up to Um Jammer Lammy (some will disagree), Bust a Groove wasn't nearly as cool as "everyone" claimed, and I didn't really like Unison, though I don't really know what I was expecting.
For me it was Valkyrie Profile. Started off nicely but I never really got an interest in it. =\

Final Fantasy VII - After spending many a joyful hour on Final Fantasy (NES), Final Fantasy II (SNES), & Final Fantasy III (SNES) I was expecting the end all of gaming in Final Fantasy VII. What I got was the most disappointing piece of sh*t I've come across to this day.
Dark Saviour - After witnessing one of the best action/adventure/RPG's of all time in Landstalker, I was so looking forward to this game. While I still enjoyed it to an extent, I was very, very disappointed.
While I wholeheartedly disagree with your distaste towards two of my favorite games, I must thank you for presenting your opinions in a well thought out post. There are many individuals here that are blinded by their own fanboyism & bias. At least you're willing to clearly express your opinions while accepting the opinions of others. Well done. :)Quote:

I really thought that Mario64 was awesome when I first got it, I upgraded from 16bit straight to 64 and was really impressed by it first, but after a couple of days it really started to get boring. I just collected things, there where no sections where I kicked a shell and ran after it to get those extra lives like in SMW, in fact the whole stomp on enemies was almost gone. Sure, there where lots of enemies but it felt more like exploration most times. After the ultimate plattformer (for me of course) SMW2 I felt that Mario64 was just empty and robbed of that magical feeling. One of my main reasons for having such a passion for 2d games is that it often has great precision, Mario64 is definitely not unplayable but its not on the same level IMO.
I have a harder time explaining whats wrong with Zelda, it just didn't klick with me. I finished it once and then started a new game to get all the spiders but got bored and never picked it up again, I sold it a some time ago and have never regretted it, they will have to pry my complete Zelda ALTP from my dead hands though. I didn't have fun with it, but I'm gonna give WW a chance since I had a pretty good time with it a month ago.
But its strange, I haven't had a good time with a Nintendo game that has gone the 3d route, maybe its because I'm afraid of change in some ways and can't help to think about how much more I liked it when it was still 2d, but I feel like I gave the games a fair chance so no regrets. I have no problem with games like DMC, SH and Shenmue etc. Nedless to say I'm pretty worried about Metroid Prime.
Yea some times I don't even know myself, I suck.
Zelda: Majora's Mask - I was soooo hyped up for this one after having it sit in my library for over a year, waiting for me to finish OOT and get an expansion pack. However, when I finally got around to it a couple of weeks ago, disappointment set in big-time. At first I was amazed by the ambitious nature of the game, what with the game's Groundhog Day-style setup, but that soon became the game's biggest weakness for me. It's not fun to repeat errands in the OOT engine, and that soon becomes the main focus of the gameplay in Majora, what with how little time 56 minutes (72 hours of game time) really is. Plus I felt that the game quickly became too bogged-down in 3D platformer-style mechanics, and using the mask abilities over and over and over again got old *quick*. I really wanted to like this game because of its concept, but I can't even bring myself to boot it up again. While I felt that OOT was the logical extension of the series into a 3D environment, Majora just broke everything that was Zelda...it's a high-concept 3D platformer built on the OOT engine.
Way of the Samurai - This is another game I wanted to love based on its concept, and I'm still wowed by its atmosphere, setting, and music. However, as a game, I feel that it's almost completely broken. The different situations all feel canned and don't offer much variation, and once you get into a fight scene in an area with a fixed camera, the engine just falls to pieces. The camera usually decides to fix on some random part of the scenery that leaves your character somewhere in the corner of the screen, and it's way too easy to get hung up on the scenery. I had such high hopes for it...but it's just not fun.
My major disappointments were Dark Savior and Brave Fencer Musashi.

Jewel Master (Genesis): What utter garbage. I ordered this from Chips 'N Bits back in the day. I can still remember waiting all freakin' day for the UPS guy to arrive. The game was totally mediocre. Bland graphics and sound, cookie-cutter gameplay. Hell, even the ending was ass. Last boss looked pretty cool though.
Stretch Panic: I'm sorry. I tried to like this game, really I did. The gameplay sucked and the entire concept was just so stupid (stretch big breasted women? Who was the genius that came up with that?).
Daytona (DC): Imagine my anticipation. Daytona on DC!! Awesome graphics, shitloads of cars & tracks, ONLINE FREAKIN' PLAY!! It was everything I wanted in a racer. Then I tried to control my car. No matter how much I played with the control "configuration" option (read: a frantic last-ditched attempt by the developer to fix the crappy control before the release date), my damn car would not respond as needed.
Castlevania: HoD (GBA): Great graphics but terrible music, broken gameplay, and atrocious level design. Shame.
Tactics Ogre (PSone): I realize that technically this is a deeper and more complex game than Final Fantasy Tactics, but it's nowhere near as fun. Each battle takes an hour or more, the character classes aren't very interesting, and you have to level up your party after nearly every encounter. Not fun. TO: KOL on GBA is slightly more enjoyable, though.
