I think Toys 'n Joys is pretty shady. Video Game Depot looks like they have some in stock. They're very trustworthy.
this is probably a stupid question, but will my usa-formatted memory card work on a jps2 or will it be formatted again?
It will work without reformatting. Just like a PSX.
Sorry for not being clear enough, I meant Dodonpachi for PSone.Quote:

I seem to have a hard time finding it, rarely shows up on ebay and Mark in Japan for example wants 90-100$ for it and I can't shell out that much). Eh might as well bite the bullet or go with the Donpachi from Himeya.
Thanks anyway.
thanks, FighterX.)
Anybody know if UPS delivers on Saturday? I had two-day air, it shipped on Thursday and like all of you, I absolutely cannot wait to get this, I've been sitting at home tracking it every hour. If they don't deliver on Saturday I think I'll die.
I think it's only business days, so you may be out of luck.
JM
No DDPDOJ on my doorstep today... guess I'll be seeing it Monday, but then that means some more time with XII Stag.
Just to let you contemplate your death a little more I'll let you know that they DO NOT deliver on Saturdays. You have to pay a lot more for Saturday delivery...Quote:

I've since forgotten I even own XII Stag. ;)
This should hit the crib around Thursday or Friday. Can't wait!!
I spend every waking hour contemplating the arrival of the game. If I'm lucky, I can cut that crap tonight. Tomorrow is more likely, however.
My attention span has been dimished to that of a goldfish, as well.
J2 - TnJ never answers e-mails. That's a huge minus in my book. Good lawk.
Yea I've noticed that, gonna give them a call tonight(don't even wanna think about the phone rate on this one) and see if they got it.
And my copy didn't land today either, being unemployed sucks.
One more day. Wednesday baby. Wednesday.
I wish I had a JPS2. I keep looking at the back of the game and wanting it sooooo badly. But I can't afford it. :(
i won't be getting my copy until thursday, but due to work/previous plans, i won't be able to play it until the weekend.( sigh.
I have... DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM. One time I sent them an email, casually, to see if they had Bangaioh for N64. I nearly blew my load (this was when I still cared about games) when they told me they had one and they would be willing to sell it to me. Sign me up, I say! I called them up and gave them my CC and all that.Quote:

However, it would not be for another MONTH until I got the game. They never sent it to me... they said they did once but they got it back, even though I gave them my correct info. WTF? And after that the guy emailed me and said "hey, do you still want the game" and I said "yes, and throw in a copy of Rent-A-Hero No. 1" because they had it for like $12. Well I finally got my Bangaioh but no Rent a Hero. They spectacularly forgot to put it in, EVEN THOUGH THE GUY REPLIED AND SAID THAT HE WOULD BE HAPPY TO PUT THE RENT A HERO IN THE BOX!!! ARRRRRRRRRR!!!!
Its been so long, 1.5 years roughly since that happened so I forgot most the nitty-gritty, but I do remember one thing: stay away from Toys N Joys.
You can't use FUK or ASS as your initials on the high score chart, but the game's fine with DIK, CUM, and TIT. Why they gotta be hatin' on the ASS...
Tomorrow. 7:30 P.M. EST. 1900 hours.
Fate has been determined.
Toys n Joys is a pretty good store, if you have the chance to visit their street location. I shop there regularly and am very happy with it - they're by far the best game store on the island!Quote:

But, I agree, their mail-order business sucks. Sometimes they have the items in stock, and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they think they don'thave stuff in stock, even though they really do.
A lot of the inventory on their site isn't even there - they have to order it from Japan before they send it to you (which might be why your Bangaioh took so long to get there).
And no, they don't have DDPDOJ - I just checked yesterday.
- Matt
Finally it is in my hands. And it is good. Too bad I have to go to class now...
Despite everyone warning me of Toys'n joys I'm still gonna call them next week to see if they've got it then (called them last night). As far as I'm concerned I know that there is a big chance that they will rip me off but what are you supposed to do? I never see any copies of it on ebay and no other store has them, might check up on gametz to see if anyone is selling though.
My copy isn't goona get here until Friday..at least my new Monitor comes the same day.
Well folks, here is my $0.50 on DDPDOJ.
Click Here to check it out. :)
Oh, they've got it in, alright!Quote:

I just went to the post office today between classes to mail a couple of my Ebay packages. Great timing, it turned out, because one of the Toys n Joys employees was there with a cartload of suspiciously DVD-sized boxes. (The Kaimuki PO is less than a block from the Toys n Joys shop).
Of course, I knew what that meant. I wasted no time in biking over to the store, where they had 4 nice shiny copies of DDPDOJ sitting in the showcase. Now, they only have 3 :)
This means that, if any of you pre-ordered the game from TnJ, you should be getting it in a couple of days, and if you order it now it is in stock and you shouldn't have any trouble. Toys n Joys isn't out to rip you off - they're just really disorganized sometimes.
- Matt
If my hand didn't feel like it was just run over by a 4x4, I would post some detailed impressions....
But it's really lovely.
The only complaint I have about the game is the 'easy' setting is a bald face lie. If that's easy, very hard must be coating screen with bullets until you can't see anything else. While death label is pure distilled madness... but that's not a complaint. :p
Well worth the cost of admission.
http://img111.ac.yahoo.co.jp/users/1...0505135131.jpg
Now there's an idea for E3...:noob:
It's christmas eve over here, I got DDP nine in the morning(!) and two hours later GGX2 dropped in, right now I'm savouring the moment.
If only this feeling could come more often..
I can still feel the straight four hour run-through from last night in my thumbs.
Here are a few points:
The game is not ugly. I'm glad you changed your mind, cigs. dai-ou-jou has a vastly different style from that of DDP with it's darker settings and almost dreary colors. But this lends itself well to the game's wacky background: cyborgs and all that crazy jazz. [Look at the artwork to see what I mean.]
The music beats DDP's into the ground, thank God. [Knew this from watching the videos, but it's great to listen and finally play.] And the announcer dominates, too. Listen to him say "presented by Cave." Love that clip. He's a riot.
More, more, more. More bullets, more firepower, more devastating patterns, more enemies. The third level in dai-ou-jou feels like the 5th or 6th in DDP. Cave doesn't waste any time in laucnhing the big shit quick in DOJ. [I'm almost glad DOJ is only 5 stages long.]
Cave still keeps a careful balance with the inclusion of the Hyper item, however. Using it in specific areas of stages is key to obtaining big numbers. Blahblah, you knew that.
The bosses put out quite a show. Once again, the patterns they dump are something to admire. They're of the 'looks impossible' variety, but I can feel a kind of increased comfort with each successive attempt.
There's tons to say about this game and I haven't even hit Stage 4 yet. But Goddamnit, this has been so worth the painful 6 months+ wait.

The sales figures, I'm all praise for the game right now(been playing Donpachi and Dodonpachi on mame to get a hang of it) but I'll reserve my judgment..
With copious continues near the end, I've cleared all five stages and I have to agree the game is plenty long as is. I'm a damn wreck by the end of stage four from hundreds of close calls and 'that would have hit me if the hit box wasn't the size of a micron' that I just blow through stage five with a bomb and a prayer.
I also got super lucky at Death Label and got the high score with a code to enter it into the internet rankings, but my score would probably be dismal compared to other players. Glad the two rankings are kept seperate since I can't even break into the top scores in arcade mode.
Great, great game. Could have used a little more personality rather than the Mars Matrix like motif, but it's still the most fun shooter I've played.
Heh? What mean you?Quote:

Just got mine in yesterday. Sweet game, but man, I really suck at shmups. I can only get past the 1st stage w/o continuing so far. This and VF4:Evo will keep me tied up over the weekend.
I love my JPS2 :)

Keep on providin', Bern. Thanks.
i've been playing a lot of dodonpachi (mame and saturn) and i was surprised to see the amount of slowdown present in dai-ou-jou. i'm not really complaining, as i wouldn't stand a chance otherwise.. awesome game, though.
Sorry dude, but they're close to my house and have lots of good stuff, so I'm still going to shop there.Quote:

People who live near the Buy-Rite shop say much the same thing.

Yep.
P.S. that is DoDonPuchi (not a typo)
I'd be 33rd with my new record of 29,132,020.
Seven Force- That DoDonPuchi is looking ace. Our mobile phone games cannot touch that.

I'm greatly looking forward to the day where these numbers are only a fraction of what I/we can achieve...
That's something that always keeps me going when I keep screwing up every other second...
Speaking of which, I need to take a better and longer look at the DVD. One of the clips on there is unholy. [The second clip on the main menu.]
EDIT: Are there any unlockable pieces of artwork? I was hoping for some pieces that haven't already been on Cave's site for months.
I can't wait until one of us in the high score thread gets a 9-digit score. Although Aphrodite says to use just one Hyper... sometimes it's worth it to gamble a little. :sneak:Quote:

Gamble judiciously. :)
I won't be able to play again until Monday, so I'll have to catch up to the two of you then. ;) I need to get a PS2 memory card soon too so I can start saving replays and unlocking things if they're in there.
I love the fact that you can save your replays stage by stage... And the fact that you can interrupt your own replays and the superplays in Simulation mode. Simply ingenious. Really quite helpful.
Does anyone want a seperate Death Label high score thread? Just for kicks, I guess. I was playing with it for a bit last night and hit for 600 million+ or so... Goddamn, I would dread having to learn these second loop bosses in the real game.
Wow. This game is truely amazing. Much better than Iky, in my ever so humble opinion. It's just...more fun! :D
Shh, say that around here and they'll burn you at the stake. :pQuote:

I've been playing this game a little pretty much every day since it came out and I still kind of suck at it, but it's still great fun. I think it's surpassed Gunbird 2 as my fav shooter of all time. All the little extra features help. I never thought it would actually be fun to watch my own replays, but now I do that every time.
sigh
I want to play this game so bad, but I'm a lazy ass, and I hate swapping between my jap and english ps2. I'm still waiting for an announcement of an english release... which might be foolish. How much is it importing for now?
I'd have to agree. Since you already have the means to play it, order it! It's $60, standard new import price. It's quite a package, and well worth the cost. There's so many options and extras to play around with- not to mention the fantastic main game.Quote:
I'm still waiting for an announcement of an english release... which might be foolish.
Even if there was a US release, TATE would be cut for sure and who knows what else. They'd probably change the name of 'Death Label' to 'Happy Fun Label' and replace all the incredible character art with random images from google search that they photoshopped.
I'd say if you like shooters DDPJ is worth buying a JPS2 for and you don't even need to do that.
Good, my JPS2 is at the post office as we speak. Now I just need to wait for my copy of DOJ to arrive. This game was the straw that broke the camel's back, in regards to my purchase of a JPS2.Quote:

Ludicrous! You'll be waiting until the end of time if you do that. Man, it shouldn't even be an issue if you alread have the means... Go to NCS or VGD and order it ASAP.Quote:

JM - Good stuff. DOJ was one of two main reasons why I needed this blasted system as well....
For everyone saying that DDP DoJ is worth buying a JP PS2 for, I'd agree. That's not why I bought mine (IIDX!), but if I didn't already have one, this'd be the game to force me into it.
I'm right up there with Ammadeau. I suck like a vacuum, but the game's too fun to be discouraging. My first time through the first level I didn't die until the boss, but I'm begining to think that was a fluke. :(
Whoo hoo! I just got my copy in the mail. Now all I need is a way to play the darn thing....
*puts DDP on the shelf next to Beatmania IIDX, which he also can't play*
So...you have two games sitting on your shelf about which several people have said are worth buying a JP PS2 for...and you still haven't bought a JP PS2?! What the Hell is that all about, Chibi?! :wtf:Quote:

20 million higher than last time I checked the Japanese rankings and I go down a slot.
Nice.
No point in seriously challenging the japanese, when it comes to highscores they seem like god's chosen ones.
Someday....
Right now I just like to check for fun to see where I'd be. I would like to break into the top twenty though as a long term goal.
Alright, alright :) My feeble protests against having a grand old time (given that DDP is one of my favorite shooters, period) are crushed beneath the weight of goodness.
Plus, my lingering sense of guilt will be abolished, since I'll be playing a DDP game legally.
Sadly, this will do nothing for my skill, which has atrophied since the last time I attempted anything in my shooter library. I never made it past the fourth stage boss in DDP... I can't wait to be crushed beneath the relentless bullet storm this time.
Ahhh... My fancy light blue JPS2 came in today. I should have DDP DOJ by early next week. I can't fuggin wait.
JM
Well.... That's why I had to get the games, because they're supposed to be so great. :) I got a nice 1st party turntable controller too. Maybe a flip top mod or something...Quote:

RealJustin in the DOJ score thread has reported having trouble accessing both the Gallery and DEATH LABEL using a flip top. So be cautious...Quote:

I need a short break from the game already... Let's see if I can actually stick to my word, however.
*curses the damn fussy console*
As an update to the flip-top problem, subcons on the Gamefaqs boards also has this problem with a flip-top. So it is confirmed it's not just me :(
Can anybody read Japanese? I don't recall if it's hiragana or kanji unfortunately, and I don't have my PS2 with me to check. I'd love to email somebody who can read it a picture of the warning screen, that could shed some light into this weird error.
Anybody know if Japanese PS2's sell for significantly less than $300 anywhere? They go for $330 at NSCX. ouch.
$330?! I spent $260 on mine at NCSX. I got an Asian console, though, which may account for the cheaper pricetag.
a japanese (not asian) ps2 can be found for $250 at videogamedepot. i bought mine there a few weeks ago and i had no problems.)
I get that warning too when switching to Death Label RealJustin, I think everybody does. I just pick yes and it loads it. I don't have a memory card, but I doubt that's what it says there.
In case anyone is wondering, what that error message is saying basically is that any data/changes that weren't saved before switching to death label will be lost
Crud, thanks for the info. I have a new thought. Anywhere in Death Label or Gallery does it have tiny videos running, before or after them or as selections? I was thinking that perhaps it needs to run a DVD encoded movie, and since the flip top just circumvents the initial region checking, when it tries to run a movie it just goes berserk.
there is no dvd video when you start the death label or gallery.. however, it seems like those two options are treated as entirely seperate games by the ps2. it's almost as though the game is rebooted when you select one of those options. maybe that's your problem?
That sounds like it's probably the problem, since nobody with a JP PS2 has the problem.
Thanks for the various tidbits guys, I'm going to spend a while trying to find a way to get around this and make it work. I just hope I don't screw up my DDP disc :(
well don't spend too much time on it. death label isn't as exciting as it sounds. it's just a boss rush with the difficulty jacked up even higher than the 2nd loop. the gallery is really nice, but most, if not all, of the images can be found on the official cave website.
Ordered from play-asia with a preorder on the PS2 model 2... $390 for DDP3. Have to wait until about May 20th. Bah to that.

See, I was like this for the first ten or so hours of Ikaruga, but then I thought I'd check out horizontal modes on the bigger TV, and it (2) was just like tate. And it's much more convenient to not have to bother with flipping.Quote:

Rob - Mebbe. gameoverDude says that there are some instances of flicker in yoko in his review.
I'm going to get a Saturn pad converted for it. I've been hunting around for a mint condition pad just for this purpose, but I didn't think it'd show up this soon (if it's not here today, it will be here tommorow).
Still, I'll be happy just to play it, even if somewhat crippled :)
The yoko flicker is just interlace related... no sprite dropouts. It's still passable if you cannot use Tate, however.Quote:

It's mine, mine, muhahahaha
Using my friends Hori arcade stick, works beautifully. I have GOT to get Tate set up in some form though, the yoko mode is definitely decent, but I want full screen goodness.
Ok, I've had my fun for the afternoon. I stayed up all night and day waiting for it to arrive, so I'm a bit bushed, and I must now slumber to recuperate for tommorows efforts.
It's still sinking in, but it feels like a more refined, 'cleaner' Dodonpachi, and I freaking love the music. I'm sure a combination good ps2 version and nice joystick are contributing to that feel, but even though I'm dying to bullet sprays, I feel totally in control of the fighter, and dodges and weaves through thick waves are almost, dare I say, comfortable.
They certainly turn up the heat fast. The first level surprised me, it wasn't really hard, but the intensity was much greater than DDP's first level (and ah, oops, don't shoot off the first bosses drones unless you mean it!). Second stage boss is the gateway to own-my-ass third stage. Not sure what fighter combination I'm going to use just yet, but I'm favoring A (which surprised me, I normally prefer slower fighters, but this one feels just about right). As for the doll, I don't know yet. Exy is the obvious choice, but perhaps I should go for Shotia and bomb my way through to the fourth (and fifth?) stages. No continuing, so I haven't seen past mid way in the third stage, but I've only played a handful of games so far.
The bevy of extras is much appreciated, and replay mode just totally kicks ass. Since you can decide at the end of the level if you want to save a replay, it'll be very easy to share videos, for those people who have capture equipment. Also, no-bullet mode is great :) Once I turn an eye towards chaining it'll be very helpful for planning I'm sure.
OK I played the Yoko mode...I was watching the superplay DVD and I had a sort of morbid curiosity. I'd imagine it wouldn't be that bad- if you've never played in TATE. There are two Yoko modes, the only difference I noticed was one was crisper but had a lot of flicker, and the other wasn't as sharp but no flicker. All the gameplay is intact, and there's no "wobble mode" (TM and copyright Rob, 2003) action going on. I was able to play it exactly as I do in TATE.Quote:
Rob said

It does however have a sort of ugly scaled down look to it. They give you a choice of either "wallpaper" on the sides or just black bars (and a stage map you can turn on or off); unfortunately the wallpaper is too distracting to play with, and the black makes it look cheap and depressing. After playing all this time in the true vertical mode there's just no going back.
Many thanks. I think I can put up with some slight graphical degrading for the convenience. I'll probably go with the wallpaper option, 'cause the bars do make it look cheap. The progress map sounds like an interesting novelty.
And no wobble mode! Brilliant move.

but the game is just nuts, im so glad i got my PS2 modded even if this ends up being the only import PS2 shooter i get though i also want XII Stag one of these days
I think this my fav shooter now after ESP Ra De (which needs a god damn home port allready!)
I actually put down this to play Esp ra. de. which has become one of my favorite games for the last month or so.
I really like Dodonpachi-3 but I much prefer the art style and bullet patterns in Esp ra. de. My only problem is the music in Esp. ra .de which I can't heare due to the soundeffects. Dodopachi-3 wins in that category. The music rocks. Even the arranged tracks were cool.
