why do i have to draw his penis?

i'm on a short break from life drawing class. we have a male model this morning. he came in and without warning just droped his robe. no one said anything...i don't think anyone really wanted to react, but i wanted to cry. the male figure is just....not too pretty. not sayin' that just 'cause i'm a guy either...well, maybe i am, but i have female friends who also agree that it's more fun to draw women...with all the curves and all. pluss the penis isn't really an atractive object. ick.

i remember this one time in my first life drawing class, this one guy got an erection while posing. someone complained that they couldn't draw him right 'cause his penis was in the way of his hand. ick. one day we had a really stinky female model. i mean, she really stank. maybe she was nervous and just couldn't help but sweat and stink up the place. i dunno. sorry if i'm grossing some of you out. i know we've got some people in here who're in art school or whatever....do you have any funny/strange/sick life drawing stories?

You should have drawn is dick and nothing else and then pretended nothing at all was wrong when you showed the class.

Ugh...don't remind me of my days as a Fine Art Major.

The worst was some dude with a drippy dick. Second worst was some bitter girl with prolific body acne.

I seriously think they just picked people off the street, sometime.

My solution, of course, was just to just adjust the proportions and features of all models slightly, to make them look like comic book characters, or, if I didn't feel I could get away with that, at least make them aesthetically pleasing in my composition. I think my art teachers just thought my "eye" was off a bit, but ah well...

However, I shall forever view sticks of vine charcoal with great hatred...we're not cavemen after all.

I'm scared.

I would NOT want to do this. A penis is one of the ulgiest, goofiest things ever. I'd just draw him blank down there like a Ken doll.

I would draw an American flag hanging off of it. Just because.

I never really had a problem drawing nude models...though I probably wouldn't be to happy if somebody came in stankin up the place.

All in the 40-yrs range, and none that aged gracefully. I think the reason they do this (it is intentional, isn't it?) is so you concentrate more on the figure's pose, form, shapes, ect. and less on oogling.

well I took an art class a while ago and we had to draw a nude model but she was probably in her early 20s but she was quite pretty, so it wasn't to bad.

But my art teacher was telling me about some guy she had to draw in her art class days. Apparently he was in his late 50s and he hung down to his knees. Plus he had an odor problem, and to this day she thinks he was some homeless guy they paid to come pose.

i have a friend who took some art classes where he had to draw a nude model - i remember him not being very happy about it because it came to him without warning. I believe he was late to class and when he walked in he was met with the sight of some naked guy posing. I remember he was pretty upset that day.

I took an anatomy class back in HS. It was pretty bad. The models we got progessively got worse. Either the chicks got fatter, droopier... while the guys looked like they crawled out of dumps and sewage drains. Once, when this one fat chick came in and disrobed... I stopped drawing and looked the other way for the entire class. *shudder*
I remembered another time this chick was built like a guy. I couldn't help but be intrigued yet disgusted at the same time.

One of my friends told me that he took this college anatomy class. It cost him a pretty penny, but he told me that the guys and chicks that modeled were ripped and slim. I wish I took that class to save me the horror....

WTF? You had naked models in HS?

Ack!!! I have to take two classes of this. I've already taken one....I needed a break after that. Too much of the naked man is not a good thing....though the naked woman was far from any better, and she had a funny odor.

i went to the same high school with fiend of rejections and well... yea...

and hero hit it right in the nose. but still, it wasn't pretty at all and you were immediately cursed if you got the money shot pointed in your direction. you would think a chick posing nude for 45 minutes or so would be good. you just don't even know. i'd much rather (and would have prefered) to sketch and draw some of the girls in my class nude though.

jesus, what is the big deal? I've taken countless life drawing classes (my first one when I was 14). If you can't be mature about it and accept the class for what it is, then you're in the wrong place. You'd be surprised how many people in your class genuinely want to be there.

It's not that I don't wanna be there, and it was never a big deal in the first place....but when it's the same person over and over, etc. it's got a little annoying....to me anyways. :)

I know plenty of art majors (living near an art college does that), and I hear tons of complaints just like these. Makes me never want to take a life-drawing class after all those descriptions.

The models don't have to be gorgeous, but at least consider if anyone would actually want to be near or see that person in the first place.

Went to a specialized art highschool. F.H. Laguardia School of Music & Art. We needed a parent's signature to attend the class. I thought it would be a good learning experience. Learned that the world is cold, cruel place.

well, my art teacher said we should be happy we didn't have to do what she had to in college. Her prof. made students pair up, and take turns drawing each other nude. No joke.

That story had every other guy googling the ladies and every female agast.

that would really suck for my class. in my first class it would've been cool 'cause there were more girls than guys and most of them were hot, but now there are only 2 girls in my class and they're....not that atractive.

i kind of want to take up another anatomy class again because of this thread...

if only my lame ass community college had such a course to take. it's ok though, porn and a pause button is all anyone really needs. :p

Most of the nudes in my life drawing classes were built nicely. There was one big exception. For three years my art professor had a back-up model in the form of obese farmer. This guy's gut was so big you didn't have to worry about drawing his penis because you couldn't see the damn thing. Also the guy had what looked like a rash on his back and couldn't pose worth crap. Drawings always ended up being "fat guy, standing with slight arm movement".

We had some decent female models, one worked as a stripper, me and a few guys from a class saw her in a club and she recognized us. Also one of my friends in class got a surprise one day. Her ex-boyfriend was our model on several occasions, and she'd never seen him nude before then. *-neo

Thank you for showing me the light, I'll never take another Art class as long as I'm alive. :o

Anyway, I would think drawing the human form is significantly more interesting than doing a still-life or a landscape. I don't draw all that much, but I hate when people take vacation and everyday pictures that don't include a person in them. Without people, life is nothing.

If the person is less than an Adonis or an Aphrodite, that's just more of a challenge. There is something worth capturing about every model's personality, even if it's just that they are poor and really need the free lunch.

I can see where the ambivalence comes in when the models are less than stunning, though.

yeah, although I never use references unless I'm forced ( x_X ) I always feel compelled to stick a person in whatever scene I'm drawing. If I'm making a shot of the forest, then someone will be sitting on a rock, or up in a tree, or something. It doesn't seem right without them in there. =\

Of course if I see a photo of a mountain with two people grinning in front, I'd probably rather not have them there. But maybe a mountain climber or something. . . they must fit the mood of the environment I think. And since I'm not a photographer, I make the environment fit their mood~

Whenever I'm drawing a naked guy in art class,I usually choose a seat so that his penis cant be seen fom my point-of-view(i.e covered by his knee or something).

I dont actually hate men's genitalia (I really LOVE mine) but just putting a pencil to paper and drawing droopy dicks(repetition is funny) just dosnt feel aesthetically pleasing.

Well, if you go to art school or want to draw (and get better) for a living, get used to it. Pretty soon you'll be chatting up the models on breaks as they get dressed without batting an eyelash. As with almost anything, when you've been doing it for years it becomes no big deal. Even if it's a 60 year old man playing a fife. Yes, that happened.

Instead of worrying about whether you can see the model's dick, or if that European girl's got some crazy armpit hair- worry about the quality of the poses. If a model can hold the fuck still, frankly I don't care what they look like. There's nothing worse than one that fidgets, or loses their balance. Models who like to talk a lot during poses bother me as well. Once you start appreciating the body as something you are trying to learn to draw inside and out, in any position it becomes too fascinating to care all that much if she's got some nice tits or whatever. Not that it wouldn't be nice, but it's not the point.

It's odd how when you've got a naked woman up on a pedestal in a spotlight your eye still wanders to the fully clothed female class members.

cigs~ I learned that real quick - after a week I was more pissed off that this one guy couldn't stop moving around and rubbing his nose than complaining that he wasn't a 'hot chick.'

I guess I've been really lucky in my life drawing classes. In my first class I had a very pretty female model which was nice because the curves were actually fun to draw. Right now my class has a male model and even though he wears a pair of those high cut jockey shorts(hey, not every model wants to be naked) I don't think I'd have a problem with drawing him naked. Also, my prof had a good way of introducing us to drawing the nude figure. He'd have the model switch poses every 15 or 20 seconds and we'd have to draw each pose. Basically, we just had enough time to draw a stick figure pose and not focus on the nakedness.

I always hasd to draw the same 60 year old overweight ex biker chick. It was horrible. I have drawings that I can scan and upload if you feel like throwing up. It always made me mad to see the upper level drawing classes get to draw this hot 25 year old chick. I talked to her a couple of times when she was on break from posing and they only get paid like 5 dollars an hour to do it. Which probably explains the people they get. The only reason they got the hot chick was because she was a total freak and got off on art.

I want to draw some naked chicks bad, but more than that I really want to get my anatomy skills down. I gotta wait till Sept though.

IMHO.

All you have to do is draw it, it's like looking at anything else and sketching it. Just ignore the fact that that organ has anything to do with sex. You only have to sketch it, it's not as if you have to put it in you mouth.

I have three friends (men) who have had to do this type of thing for the past year, they don't care because to them it's just another image.

I really think if you're taking a life drawing class, the aesthetic appeal of a model shouldn't really be all that important.

Personally, if you end up with a person of any extreme, it's great : skinny people, muscular people, fat people... they're all interesting to draw because of the contrasting forms. It's the average Joe (or Jane) with no muscle definition and just kind of formless that really bugs me -- not fat enough to give form, not skinny enough for definition.

In any case, we've had some weird models too...

One guy had this huge gut, ponytails and struggled to take off his leopard print briefs everytime we resumed the posing. He was really professional about everything though. He held the same pose for over an hour because the teacher forgot to set the timer. Crazy.

There was this middle aged woman who was kind of a slut. She'd like get into all the weird poses, some which spread her legs wide open and revealing... erm... pretty much everything to whoever was sitting there. That's generally a art model no-no.

There's always this asian girl who models too. She has a tatoo full on her back, which pretty much obscures all the anatomical detail back there. Otherwise she had a nice body and she was shaved... 'down there'... which distracted a number of guys considerably.

There's a model I've had who's just got stripper-esque implants. Kind of ridiculous drawing them coz they take up the whole drawing and do nothing to reinforce natural proportion and form.

Lastly, there was this weird guy who was muscular and professional in his modelling. He was a great guy to draw except his nutsack was the size of a large fist. It's just jarring.

Otherwise we have an assortment of colorful people. Some of which are great models despite not having a perfect body.

I had a friend in a LD class who would always exaggerate the sexual characteristics of the models into weird abstract designs. It's very rude to laugh while models are posing, I found out. :D

I think some of you guys just overthink this stuff. It's not like you're handling the guy's junk or anything... unless you've got a really hands-on kinda sculpture class. Then, run. :p

Well...started Drawing 3 classes yesterday...thought the teacher would wait a couple of classes until he let the students draw naked models...nope, he had one ready on the first day of class.

She was rather large. It was cool though, too bad there were some immature kids in the class.
