Processors

Alright, I'm building a new computer and have been looking at Athlon processors. Cost is not an issue, but I'm just curious as to which processor to get. I've been looking at the xp 2800+ but I can't find one that ISNT OEM. The 2700+ looks nice too but I'd rather find the 2800+ retail. I WILL be overclocking this so I was just crious as to which processor to get?

Does the 2800+ offer anything over the 2700+? Again, price is not an issue, I just need to get the computer built my mid febuary, so if the 2800+ will come out retail by then, then I guess I can wait, otherwise its a hrd choice. Is there anything else I should take into consideration?

If money isn't an issue, just get a Pentium 4 over 3ghz. If Voodoo uses it, it has to be the best on the market.

I've been waiting on the new Athlons, but they're so hard to get ahold of...

If money is no object... get the P4-3ghz. Hyperthreading and shit, good stuff.

Go with AMD its a better processor than the intels. AMD's are pretty easy to overclock and less chances of frying.

Well, New Pentium 4 3.6 Ghz with hyperthreading is hella nice, and gives an excellent performance. Its quite pricy though, but again, if money is no object.....

Athlons are nice, especially latest 2700+ and 2800+, but the like to run hot, so make sure you get good cooling, especially if you plan on overcloaking.

If money's no object, rock the P4.

I just made an AMD (2100+) and am very happy with it. If you go with AMD and overclock (if you overclock anything) get a really good heatsink/fan as well. AMD's tend to run hot. If you're looking for a mobo, I can recommend Asus. They rock. I would go with a 2800+, and use the savings to get as much RAM as you can. My ASUS N7N8X can hold 3 gigs(!) of PC 2700.

Agreed with most, if money is not an issue, the P4 is rocking the house right now. In terms of power and performance, AMD has fallen behind Intel as of late, so I'd go with a Pentium if at all possible.

if you want t overclock easily get and athlon xp thoroughbred B processor. the A's overclock fine but initial tests of some who have gotten B's say they OC much farther. if you need more info hit up the sharkeyextreme boards since most people here are too ignorant of PC's.

Sorry, only athlon for me guys ;) I am planning on an asus board and already bought a gig of DDR RAM. I also need help finding the best mobo I can. I have a hard time choosing since there are so many variables. I wish there was some sort of mobo site where you could minimize the results on it (like, has to have nforce 2 chipset :D) Anyway so far I am only able to get it if i wait til feb, or buy a mobo with it. Maybe I'll just get the 2700+ and upgrade later.

Either way, I hear the heatsinks it comes with suck. Should I pay the extra money just for the warranty and buy a new heatsink, or will they one it comes with work fine? (money isnt a problem, but i always get the best price i can)

Stick with the asus mobo and for the heat sink try coolermaster they are pretty good.

Alright, I've decided on the athlon xp 2700+ and the ASUS A7N8X motherboard - quite possibly the best board to EVER grace the earth. I'm tellin ya this board has EVERYTHING! dual onbaord LAN, onboard (good) sound, nfroce 2, dual ddr, all that stuff and soooo much more! Now i can scratch that 10/100 card and sound card off my list of trivial items to buy ;). Anyway thanks for the help guys

It's a fantastic board though. I was really surprised at how well the on board sound works. With some nice speakers it sounds wonderful. DVD's rock too! And be sure to check the manual for placing the RAM. For that duel RAM feature thingamabob I think they want you to put it in 1 and 3, 2 and 3 or 1, 2 and 3 (not sure how many DIMMS you have). And I think this board only supports up to the 2800+. I would recommend you get a better heat sink if your going to overclock. My 2100+ (non-OCed) idles at 43C/109F. At high usage it goes up to 120F. But it is stable, and I've had no problems (I have the heatsink that it came with and 2 other fans running).

Yup, I'm very excited for it to arrive!

Right now I have 8 fans total in the case (5 case, 2 power supply, 1 GPU [if that counts]). The only thing I'm not sure about is then entire heatsink/fan deal and how to put it on!!! This is my frist time building a computer, so I research everything one part at a time. Now all I have left is the whole heatsink/fan thing!

I know you put arctic silver on the top of the prcessor and then the heatsink fan thing on that (are they connected?) I was looking at the volcano 11 for my fan (is it a heatsink too?) My case will be nice and cold >: )

make sure when you push down the latch on the hs/fan that the pressure point is right in the middle of the cpu. i almost snapped my xp1800 because i figured it only went on one way. and only put the arctic on the little black box and not on anything else.

rumpy that temp is a little high. im running an 1800 (overclocked to 2300 speeds) with a thermaltake volcano 7 hs/fan and only to regular case fans and im running between 30-35C with a full load.

:D is an xp 2700+ a Tbred A or Tbred B??? I'm gonna get a volcano 11 and OC that sucker like NOBODIES business ;)

depends....you wont know if its an a or b until you get it by the numbers on the die....tho i believe newegg has listed on their site what revision the chip is. gradually all chips will be a "b" but they have to sell out the remaining "a's" first.

2700? wow....you should be able to get that thing smoking tho ive heard of people pushing the 1600's (1.4ghz) past the 2.2ghz mark with a good chip.

OMG thats awsome!!! I'm not sure about which volcano fan to get. I looked on the website and it has it listed that the newer fans, while built better, are slower and louder (only 4800 RPM at 48 DB!) but it sais for athlons and stuf... I'm not really sure.... :-/ either way what do you think is a good heatsink for my processor, or would the one it came with work fine?

I've got an AMD Athlon XP 1900 with a Thermaltake Volcano 7, and I can only get it to run at 55c. I can not get it to run cooler. I've tried leaving the sides off. I only used the default thermal gel pad affixed to the heatsink, as I was told it would be more than enough.

Should I get some thermal paste, and if so, what kind?

Arctic Silver 3 is the best from what I hear. It runs for about $6 for the small tube which holds a lot more than you need :D

well from what i hear the temp i register is prolly about 10C cooler than the actual core temp of the cpu but in that case i'd still be around 40-43....IF thats the case and all im using is generic Radio Shack thermal paste :D

What are you using to monitor your temperature?

uh.... this is your first time building a computer, right?

and... you plan to overclock your CPU....?

im kinda confused. have you overclocked stuff before or soemthing? it seems that someone who doesnt know how to attach a fan to a CPU shouldnt know how to overclock one.

I'm not gonna overclock it, but it sounds like my processor is running hot regardless. I just wanna keep this machine healthy.

No, I've overclocked another CPU before, this is just my frist time BUILDING a computer! :D I'm not gonna do anything jurastic, just a little on the cpu and the gf4... maybe the ram :D
