I have noticed that many people have many-a different name for these guys.
I have always called the Scallions. But once I moved to Canada I noticed that they are usually called Green Onions (Oignon Vert) here. Other people call them Shallots or Spring Onions...

I call those puppies scallions. I've never heard of them be referred to by any other name.
I say they're green onions. Mmmmm... good stuff.
Green onions, I'd never heard of scallions until you mentioned it.
Green Onyons. I've heard the phrases "Scallions" and "Spring Onions" before, but never Shallots.
I, however, do not enjoy green onions. The only onions I enjoy are red onions fried and put in a dish. I hate raw onions.
I call 'em green onions.
We call them green onions around here. I dislike them, but they occasionally find their way into a salad. White onions are the best. Red onions tend to dominate the taste of meat too much, but I will eat them in Chicago-style hot dogs.
"Green Onions" sounds like a folk-guitar piece.

That is actually the bottom of that is connected to the "green things".. I guess "stalk" may be the word for that... Anyway, some people seem to call the bottom part shallot. Some people call the entire thing the shallot. Others call any part of it the shallot, which is why it's an option here.. and surely why someone voted for it. ;)Quote:

We call 'em scallions or green onions, and they are pretty fantastic in soups, and delicious cooked with teriyaki beef julienne :)
Those aren't shallots, shallots are part of the onion family, kind of look like a cross between a small onion and garlic bulb in appearance.

Like I said previously, the image you linked is what is attached to bottom of the green stalks. See my image in a previous post or Google for "shallots" and you'll see more. ;)
I used to call em French Onions for whatever reason.

Chives, I believe, are something quite different. The chives I've had (and grown) are like this:

They are thin, almost like grass, and have purple flowers. I think they are grown from seeds rather than from bulbs.

Scallions I cook with them all the time. They make a great garnish.
