Is a Bachelor of Arts worthless?

A year ago, life was simpler for me. I was finishing off my long delayed stay at university and working on campus at a pizza place. That job was for students only so when I graduated I had to look for work. I never expected my BA to be worth much but I figured I was in a better job searching position than years before when I had no work experience or degree.

I went through months of trouble before being able to even find a shitty job. I worked at Starbucks for the Christmas season and then was conveniently(for them) fired at the end of December.

I really want to know if this degree serves any actual real world purpose. Did I just waste my time? I have no desire to return to school.

Well, I have a BFA and it landed me a pretty cool job in the entertainment industry. Just don't expect that piece of paper to pave the way in though; I had a ton extracurricular work that seemed to stand out more than my degree. Plus, when I decide to go back to get my Masters degree several years down the road, it is pretty much essential.

Could be worse, it could be a BFA. I have a BFA, it's pretty much worthless. MFAs are even worse. I'm back in school to remedy the situation.

Also bad is a BA in a science. People that have BAs in say math or computer science or whatever often say they regret it. You're automatically outranked by the BS holders.

When/if the economy ever picks up again, things could change. Who knows.

Having connections lends a huge hand in getting a good job these days.

As far as I've learned, the BFA isn't worth much, but the work you produce while acquiring can be quite beneficial. It's all portfolio work and experience in the creative industry, though, so if you're well-spoken and motivated enougth generate credentials on your own, go for it. I wasn't, and thus I'm finishing up school now.

Yes. A BA (and BFA) is completely worthless. I went without a job in the field of art for about 15 months after I got my BA degree. It was only after doing a lot of practice with computer graphics away from college did I actually find the ability to get a job. People don't want classical art skills. Although you will pick up a lot of necessary design skill from being around art for so long.

However, I liked getting the BFA to at least stave off having to work full time for several years. That was the only benefit I have found from it. Well, that and the design sense that will rub off on you.

getting a job is who you know

keeping that job is what you know

so while a BFA may not help you GET a job in a sense it will help you keep that job


and anyone who is an artist i highly reccomend going to school

it will make you a 10000000000000x better as an artist

nothing helps your art the way school does having classes where your forced and pushed to create art is a very important thing

i also feel its important to learn the basics the simple rules and foundations of art
