Teacher In Custody Accused Of School Rape
FORT WORTH, Texas, 12:30 p.m. CST January 31, 2003 - A Fort Worth substitute schoolteacher is under arrest for allegedly raping a young girl while students looked on and two others participated in the assault, police said.
Police say the incident happened last week in a classroom at a Fort Worth middle school. Even police say they had a hard time believing the allegations until the started investigating.
David Franklin, 21, had a towel over his head as he was taken into custody. Police said he is accused of raping a 14-year-old female student in a classroom at Horizons Alternative School last week.
Police also said there were six male students who watched the assault, and two of them also assaulted the girl.
One of the witnesses told his mother what had happened, and she's the one who went to police.
"I'm glad and I'm proud of my son because he came forward with this and I know he knows it was wrong. That's why he said something," parent Sandra Mendoza said.
Franklin was processed by police in Fort Worth and then transferred to the Mansfield jail.
"Not only did (Frankin) not stop the action that was going on, he basically joined in with the male students, and went as far as to turn the lights off in the classroom," Sgt. Dave Stamp said.
As for the two students who also allegedly assaulted the girl, prosecutors say they expect to file charges against them as well.
