F@#!in' Girlfriends + F@#!in' Compaqs = Me With a F@#!in' Migrane

I'm in need of help, my Girlfriend told her friend that I would help her with her computer, without asking me if I was willing ofcoarse. Now I have a fucking Compaq (I hate Compaqs for reasons too numourous to list) with an external CD Burner (USB) that isn't being recognized. I have installed the drivers for it, I would assume anyhow, and pluged it in but the add new hardware window never pops up, and when I do it manualy the burner isn't detected. It could be that her USB ports aren't on/active or whatever but I can't get into her system bios because I don't know how to do so on a Compaq. I can do it on my PC but the Compaqs start-up screen consists of a red Compaq logo that gives me no other information about her machine and doesn't tell me what button to hit and when, like mine does. Anyone here with any info on how to get into the bios or why else the external might not be recognized?

Well, this certainly has a lot to do with gaming.

Have you updated the USB drivers and/or tried any other USB devices?

I think you can still get to the BIOS by hitting delete, but some f them password protect it.

I've tried delete, F-keys 1-8, Esc, and Tab I've tried about half the F'n keyboard.

i worked at some tech support place a while back and i had to deal with compaqs all the time. amazingly unfriendly computers. in any case, i can't remember the key to press to enter the bios, but try delete or f10. if they don't work, try the other f keys.

i may be wrong but i cant remember if its win95 or 98 that needs a service pack install before USB ports can be used.

That was 95. 98 has native USB support.

If she has 98 First Edition, you may have to download the USB service pack from Microsoft.com.

That's no big deal, USB 1.1 internal cards can be had for $20 bucks these days, that's typically what I recommend to my customers who have shot USB ports.

All I can say is that I fucking hate Compaqs. I enable the USB and I get a video card problem in return. WTF! I need to start drinking.

that doesnt mean much. i had a 95 machine that shipped with usb ports (could see them in the system and all) but they didnt work because 95 didnt suport them. like andy said you may need the latest SP.

Actually it's looking like it isn't SE, but again all that's moot cus I can't get her network IP to switch over to allow her on my network to get the SP and I don't feel like reformatting. She went out and bought a new PC last night, this one is going to her mothers.
