Still waiting for my slow connection to download it, but the screenshots also on the page look great. I might buy a PS2 just for this game and the upcoming Sakura Taisen 5, of course. :)

Okay, now that I've watched the trailer... anyone know where I can get a pre-modded PS2 online? I might have to settle for just getting a Japanese one because damn...

I only can tell it's a remake because they said it was. Everything in the trailer is new or touched up to the point that it might as well be new. There's just no way I can not have this game. :)

Since then, I've been pining for all the Sakura crap I can get my hands on.

I think I really need to just buy a damned game in the ST series, find a good translation, and play it already. It's something I keep putting off...

The first game is great (PS2 is a remake of 1), the second one adds a little to it, the third revolutionizes it, and the fourth ends it.

That being said, ST and ST3 are definitely my favs in the series. I can never get tired of 'em. Heck, I played ST through 13x already. Starting with the remake may not be a bad idea, although ST2-4 will only be on DC. Also, DC ST save data works with ST2-4 as well.

Ammadeau: I recommend just getting a J-PS2. After all the headaches with modded PSX's, and the cost that the only workable(?) PS2 chip solution is the Messiah, which will cost you ~$100 for the chip alone, I say just do J-PS2. 'sides, perhaps you'll need a R2 player for the DVD it comes with.

Unfortunately, this is practically the only link I have that sells modded PS2 now. I only read about it on another board so I can't vouch for them in any way. Unfortunately, places like Lik-Sang who used to sell them don't anymore, and all the other shadier sites only offer the chips and installation separately.

You have to do some tricks with a PS2 mod, but I haven't really had trouble with mine. The Messiah is not the only chip that plays original imports, mine is an Origa and it works, the only problem is it's a bitch to install and a lot of places don't really have it. If you go to certain countries in Asia (I think you know which ones), you should be able to get a Messiah-modded PS2 easily.

Back to the trailer, looks like some great stuff in there? What's with that scene of Oogami and Sakura fighting in space though? Reminded me of a......similar scene in 4. Ah well, eagerly anticipating my copy.

Sakura Taisen 4 was Cash Run #1, this re-re-revision of ST1 is Cash Run #2. I funded them for Cash Run #1, so Red and Overworks and whoever the fuck else I have to blame so that ferricide doesn't correct me can go fuck themselves for Cash Run #2.

Sakura Taisen 5 should be coming out first, but what do I know.

Doh.. I just made a thread about this because I didn't notice this one.. oh well.. The movie looks really really neat. :)

But um, hasn't Sakura Taisen already been officially announced to come to PS2 in North America? As far as I know it is... they just have not announced which game(s) they are bringing over first... but I am a ST n00b so who knows.. :p

I'd find out before going through all the trouble of getting a modded PS2 or a J-PS2 anyway though...

The remake is never coming to the US. What's coming to the US is ST5 'Action' which basically means 'editing out all the stuff that people in the US may not like.' Bah to that.

I'd buy this just for the improved battle system alone, but it's clear from the trailer that's not the only thing they're added to this.

Playing through ST3 again now in anticipation for this. Battle system may be easy, but it's still lots of fun for me. Damn, the casino is hard though. Erica destroyed me in a poker game. Good thing it doesn't auto save. :p

Sounds like I'll just get a Japanese PS2, even though my wallet protests. Would be nice to have a region 2 DVD player as well anyway.

Is there really one? It would go well with my Sakura Taisen dreamcast.

It really sucks when every bit of Sakura Taisen anime is coming or is already out in the US, but the series it's based on doesn't get the green light. Funimation just announced they're bringing the Sumire OAV and the 3 OAVs based on ST3 to the US.

I'm starting to think we'll see the live action musicals in the US before any of the games. :(

I can't a find a pic right now of the new PS2 (I could've sworn it was on NCS' page recently), it's actually just a nice metallic pink color, not directly related to ST, although it'll be released on the same day on 2/20.

As for ST in the U.S., chalk it up to I'll believe it when I see it. Then again, do we really want to play a dubbed version?

Okay, now that I want a Japanese PS2, anyone know where I can actually buy one? videogamedepot.com doesn't seem to have any PS2s at all, which is odd because I thought I saw some yesterday on their site, and NCS only has the asian (region 3) and that's not even in stock. They do have preorder of Sakura Taisen memory card, which is tempting...

Hmm, they have a pre-modded system (though I'm worried about 'doesn't play mod blocked games'), a Japanese system (which is more money than the modded one), and pre-order for the 'Sakura' PS2, which is just pink and has nothing to do with the Sakura Taisen series. Not to mention it's $50 more than the regular Japanese one...

Well, as long as you put RARE!!! in the auction title about a dozen or so times, and point out that there's only one out there, it'll probably go for $500. Tell people that they'll also get a "TEN GAMES ON ONE DISC!!!!!!!!" thing and add a couple hundred to that.

Tsubaki, what are your favorites for the J-PS2? It seems strange having one on my shelf only for Sakura Taisen, so I've been thinking about Venus & Braves and Ape Escape 2. Anything else good?

I agree with the prediciton that we'll only see ST5 Action here in the US, probably in 2004/5. Until then, don't expect to see Overworks/Red Co. add much of anything new to this series. I'm only mildly looking forward to ST1 Atsuki. It'll be a good remake but still a remake.

What's going on with Lando/Kayama? It's taken so long for him to get back to finishing the ST4 translation (not that many people care at this point). Hmm, did Sega hire him to do localization for ST5? ;) haha Well, that would be cool if it were true.

You could play the remake in 2 weeks, but I think ST5 will be 1-2 more years. Anyone who has played ST3 can see how much work it probably took to research the time period, settings, wardrobes, etc of 1920's Paris. Considering that to create the ST1 remake w/ new animations & 3D modeling it took 1 year from the end of ST4, you could add that 1 year plus another 1 for R&D, level design, and scenarios for ST5's New York (not to mention translation for the US version). Eh, it's just a prediction... so I say the best bet for ST5 is Q1 2005 for Japan; Q4 2005 for US. Geez, that'll be at the end of the PS2's life, huh...

Exactly... even if Ammadeau gets the modded PS2 from that place, he'll still only be able to play R1 dvds. (Ecole de Paris OAV R2 DVD coming out next month w00t!)

This is a bad question to ask me, because as of now there's only 2-3 PS2 games I would want. I own Grandia Xtreme and Space Venus featuring Morning Musume for the J-PS2 and neither of them are good games... I'm getting ST Atsuki Chishio ni of course. But aside from that, if I owned a PS2, the only other game I would get is Tales of Destiny 2, the real one. I've seen the opening theme a countless number of times (Kuraki Mai: Key to my Heart) and I'm hopelessly addicted ^^

For some reason Venus & Braves doesn't interest me in the slightest. It sounded promising initially, but as more details leak, the less it sounds like my type of game. I would pick up Star Ocean 3, though.. and maybe one day I'll get into the Beatmania (DX) series. Keep in mind I don't own any next-gen system aside from GBA...

Heh, I really don't know. I haven't seen or talked to Jon on IRC ever since he switched schools (a couple years now). He just entered college when the ST3 translation started, and if you remember he was pretty stagnant with updating those as well. I think things got really busy for him real fast and he's just putting academics over fan-translations as a priority at this point. But if I hear from him, I'll let you know.

Well, I think ST5 Action is still speculation at this point. They never formally announced any specific ST title to be translated over but it's a very safe bet that ST5 Action will be it.

Btw, ST5 action is basically an action game based on the ST5 story/characters. It's a completely separate game from ST5. But given its Action-emphasis (as opposed to "Dramatic Adventure"), it's safe to say that it has more of a chance to sell among Westerners than the original games.

I'm not quite so sure if they would bring over a game from the main series if the Action sold well... but they might just bring over ST5 because it takes place in America. ST1 remake doesn't really stand much of a chance of being localized.

Yeah, I've thought it over and a JPN PS2 sounds like the way to go for me, though I won't need a region 2 player to watch the upcoming ST3 OAVs because Funimation picked up the US rights to that and the Sumire OAV. :)

Still, I already own some region 2s and I'm planning on buying the DVDs of the ST musicals, so a region 2 player would be a nice thing for me.

Oh.. if you can, you should grab the Sakura Taisen Kayou Show 5: Kaijin Bessou if you want to get into musicals. It's got about 5 hrs worth of footage, and it not only contains the 5th musical, but it contains the Paris Mini Live Show as well. So you get both casts on one 2-dvd set. The only other performance the Parikagekidan did was for a dinner show in Japan 2 months ago. Kaijin Bessou was preorder-only (for its initial printing and rerelease), but you might just be able to still get the rerelease from http://www.amotokyo.com
At the very least, it's still available for order on their website.

Videogamedepot is screwing with me. I just checked now and sure enough, Japanese PS2 in stock. Pre-order made and ready for the arrival of ST remake. I'm already half through ST3 so I hope ST2 will keep me occupied until it arrives. Still can't wait. I know it's a remake, but it's a remake of one of my favorite games of all time, so it's worth the rather steep cost of admission.

No idea about how Funimation is going to release them, but I'm guessing all of them on one disc. They cram 6 eps of Fruits Basket onto each disc, though with no loss in quality, so I don't mind. To buy all four Japanese releases would be a little too much for my wallet. I'll wait and suffer.

That musical sounds great. I'll look into it....
Actually found a review of the musical from someone who saw it live. Yep, definitely a nice treat for my new JPN PS2. I'll regret it when I get the credit card bill for all this, but you only live once. I can put off getting new speakers yet again.

Yep. I placed a couple of Amotokyo orders in the past (for Kaijin Bessou among other things). I like them cuz if you get over $200, it's free EMS shipping. But below $200, it's only $10 EMS anyway, which ain't that bad.

The only warning about Amotokyo is that they are a little anal on you if this is your first time ordering. Basically, a few years ago, they got screwed over because of credit card fraud and did not allow credit card orders for a time. They've since reinstated it, but they will likely ask you to prove your credit card is real either by faxing in a CC invoice or scanning it. I just scanned my CC invoice and emailed it to them as a jpg. Took only a minute of my time, and my order came quickly and with no problems. But if you don't have access to a fax or scanner, you may want to reconsider as I'm pretty sure they'll ask you to prove your CC info. This only matters for the first time. After you're verified, you can order in the future as normal.
