Yes, it will do fine for that.
I preordered FFTA but haven't been able to pick it up yet. I have to call them in the morning and ask them to hold it till Saturday. I'm way too bust till then. Plus, my car died. :\
Gonna be hitting up Best Buy today for it. $26.99 Circuit City price match + double Reward Zone points = Happy Rags! :D
It's good, it has a very similar style to the original. Though I don't think it's anywhere near as good as FFT. One of the best GBA soundtracks ever I think.Quote:

Since I picked it up last night, I've put about six hours into it.
Woo!
the battles have to be uphill, due to the lack of rotating maps. starting you at the top of a hill won't work, as it's too much of an advantage for your archers. i suppose the maps can also be flat, but that's not too exciting.
Indeed.
More dramatic inching up a incline to defeat your foes too.
About 8 hours in.
Feels really good so far. And for the record I totally understand why there is no "optimum equip" like other rpgs.
In ffta you get your abilities from the items/weapons you equip, so just grabbing the sword with the highest atk power might not be the best solution. You'll need to always be checking what abilities you get from each item before you equip it. So yea, not a big problem there.
I also don't understand how people can say there aren't any random battles:
After you get in a few hours, there are always other clans wandering around the map that you can go engage for extra exp/gil...just like a random battle!?
I thought there was no random battles either, but there is after just a couple hours. I've hardly advanced the story at all, I'm addicted to getting better jobs. Had two Ninja's because I wanted the double sword ability but I cant find a item that lets me learn it! Damnit! I've got a Dragoon, Red Mage, a kick ass black magic moogle that is now a gunner. A sweet White mage that know Cura, Life, Esuna and now is learning black magic. Also working on a Summoner. I just want that damn double sword ability!!!!!!Quote:

It is sorted by class, but scrolling through a long ass list of items is no good. I also find myself going forward and back through menus quite a bit, and they aren't instant, so it takes up time.
But those are minor gripes. The game itself is great fun. For once, I genuinely wish I knew more people who owned gbas and played it, linking up looks like it'd be really cool.
I would thought playing Disgaea would have numbed you to those problems :pQuote:

It's very good, and only slightly behind Tactics Ogre as a game.
I like the FFT series (ah, that feels good saying that) more than the TO series just for the fact that I find that the FFT/FFTA job system is a lot more enjoyable.
from an interesting gamefaqs thread (stop laughing):he details other changes, but they relate more to the story.Quote:
Although I can't say I have extensively played the Japanese versions, from my own experience and the various comments made, the following changes seemed to have been made:
Several law types have been removed.
Chief among these is laws where you would be penalized for not doing damage less than or equal to "X" amount, for not doing equal or *more* damage than "x" amount, and corresponding "less, equal, or more" laws regarding HP recovery. The ban on healing can still be found.
Another set of laws not featured in the US version banned those which started or ended with certain katakana or kanji which would start or end that way when rendered in hiragana (if I've messed this up majorly, let me know - I'm not good with Japanese concepts).
I also haven't seen the ban on the four elements (Earth, Fire, Water, Wind), but I have the feeling it's there somewhere, possibly as "Elements Ban" (which I think I've seen).
Judges now reward 1 JP for following certain "Recommend" 'laws'.
Counter to each "Forbidden" law, there is now a "Recommend" law, which if followed will cause the acting unit to receive 1 Judge Point. Example, if one of the current "Recommend" laws is "Sabers", then a successful saber hit by a Fencer will earn that unit 1 JP.
Both of the above law changes are likely due to the head designer's dislike of the final Japanese product's law system.
having read about some really horrible laws present in the japanese release, these changes are welcome. maybe i'll actually manage to buy the game this weekend.
I just have to say that the law system is about the stupidest gameplay "feature" that I've ever seen in a game.
Just wait until you have like 3 different laws to remember (that change each fight), and when you can't win a fight without the proper anti-law card (or without getting a million yellow/red cards). Dmg2: Animals is the worst offender that I've encountered so far.
Other than that the game is pretty decent, but a good bit inferior to FF
The Laws are pretty lame.
Though, I think the Dispatch Missions are even lamer.
There are 300 missions, but not 300 battles. 75% of so of the missions you just send one person to do them, and they come back a few days later with it done.
It's not hard to do 6 at a time or miss the people, when you get new Clan Members like every other sucessful Dispatch Mission.
Weak.
I like the law system a ton more than I thought I would.Quote:

Unless you're spending time "raising" nearly all your clan members, doing that many at a time (while you're still doing normal missions) isn't very realistic.Quote:

There aren't any "dispatch missions" in Disgaea...FRENCHY!Quote:

Having dispatch missions that almost anyone can do, and then giving you person after person in the clan is silly. There never is a need to send anyone that you would miss on one of them. You can just send one of the new recruits.
I've had one person die one time, and then revived them, and I'm not exactly at the beginning. I've got 12 towns planted and completed and have yet to lose a single fight.
Yep. I just don't have as big a problem with the laws, or atleast they haven't seemed to be that big a deal for me.Quote:

Nearly all my surplus clan members "sit down" (meaning a poor ability dispatch compeletion result) when you check their ability to successfully finish a dispatch mission.
I think I've been using 9 or 10 (with about five being lower levels than the others) characters, so for me, I can only realistically maybe be doing 3 dispatch missions at a time.
Like I say, the easiest way to do it is to accept anyone into the clan, and then send them on the Dispatch missions.
You never miss if you look at them before you send them.
They jump, they will suceed.
They do nothing, it's 50-50.
They slump down, they will fail.
I don't even use any healers anymore, the battles don't last long enough for my 5-6 people to get whittled down.
I do need to pick up some counter attacks, somehow. Not quite sure how to get that ability.
My interest in this game has gone from little to great over the course of this night.
The Moogle design for this game is the best of any Final Fantasy I've ever seen. Of course, I've no idea what the Crystal Chronicles Moogles look like, so this statement might be premature.
thus far, i have them for monks and thieves. equip them with the brigantine armor, not sure of other classes counter items.Quote:

Im only on 13 hrs right now, but i heve been on a morrowind bender lately. Its funny, a fighter i didnt really care for in my team became a ninja, and now im loving him, his move radius is big, and his jitsus do status damage and normal damage, and his hand to hand kicks butt, the paladin however, he is just dissapointing me. Paladins are supposed to kick ass and heal themselves,so far his ass kicking is underwhelming.
The class I've been most surprised with so far is the Sage.
Their offensive abilities are insane.
im looking to get one, just need to get my second nu mou to do some casting, i have a passable beast master but i have been using the first nu to do both white and black casting,as his abilities are very high.
Are any of you guys getting good treasure from your town/area placement? A friend of mine says I may have fucked up my chances of getting rare weps/armor drops (ex. Excalibur,Genji Gear , Perseus Bow etc.) from treasure hunts because of my placement of these areas? All Ive been getting so far are Phoenix Downs , Holy Waters and Potions- didnt realize my placement of these areas made a difference in items gained from that. So I guess I'm doing something wrong - guess I better check out a Faqs' or something before I screw myself out of some good equipment.
Liking it so far though - I agree with you guys on the laws though - they do kind of suck. I guess it just makes those people who use the same strategy's and powered up characters think twice before they make a move which I guess does make the game a bit more challenging, so I'll keep my complaining about that to a minimum.
Have any of you tried the linking system so far? Supposedely there are certain quests that you can only finish through linking, and some pretty pimp armor and weapons to gain from linking only as well.... unfortuneatly I'll never see 'em as the only games my friends play are of the Halo,GTA,Madden Football variety  ......
Any of you guys live in the Florida area per chance ? :p
I've gotten a few rare things from the Treasure Hunts, nothing amazing though.
Right now, I'm:
Lv 16.
25 hours, 32 Minutes in
Clan: Opuk! Lv 19
Missions cleared: 72
ive got roughly 2 hours on this game.
and.... well, shit. there should be alot more time on it. but it just moves so damn slow. ive only been in 3 fights! thats not good!
this makes my head just ache. i was expecting something a bit different.
so, im still playing Disgaea.
ill try to pick it up again tomorrow.
I feel the same way. The pacing is way too slow for how limited your options are per turn. Everything about it is slow...the menu animations, walk animation, pauses between actions, the computer deciding its turn...Quote:

Still, it has some charm and addictive character building (although I liked FFT's system much better) so I'll stick with it. My brother has it too, so we'll try some link missions later.
It's sick and I'm very looking forward to this.
picked up a coppy yesterday. i'm about 2 hours in and i like it so far. two other friends of mine have had it for a few days so i'll be linking with them once i gain some levels and other classes.
I'm actually about 54 hours into this game and the end still seems quite awhile away. I've built up my dudes quite a bit and have done a ton of the non-essential missions to get items that I couldn't steal. I wanted to talk about strategy on here, but some of you are probably not too far in the game, so I'll put it in spoilers.
Right now my main party is 2 humans, a bangaa, a n'mou or whatever, one of the girl elf races, and a moogle.
I'm pretty happy with everyone except the bangaa. I just don't like this race. They're supposed to be heavy fighters, but nothing they get can compare to the damage of two swords. So basically my bangaa is much weaker than both of my humans, even though the bangaa has wpn attack+ equipped. Dragoons seem ok, but really jump just gives your normal attack some range (no damage added or accuracy). The 80 million breath attacks they get don't help too much. I like Templars since they get Haste, but that's really the only useful ability they get. Gladiators are just crappy Fighters, and none of the other jobs seem that great. So right now, I think Bangaas are the weakest race by quite a bit.
I have one human as a blue mage/thief. Thieves are an absolute must. Steal ability is insane, and all of the equipment steal abilities are needed to get equipment earlier than you normally would. I'm really liking blue magic even though it's sometimes a pain to get some stuff. Both of the faerie heal abilities are awesome. Matra magic, Night and Twister are both really powerful at times. I have two swords equipped on this guy, and I keep him as a Blue Mage since he gets more MP per level than he would if he were a Thief. I have Marche has a Fighter/Ninja/Paladin. I have him as a Ninja right now so he can gain speed with levels, but I hate the Ninja Skills. None are any good except Throw. Paladin's Holy Sword thing is really good though. And the Fighter's Air Render and Far Fist are pretty good if you can't get in range. Of course, Marche has Two Swords equipped. He can do an insane amount of damage each attack. And the stupid computer loves to attack my dudes when I have Strikeback on. I think Humans are the best fighting class because of two swords, the ability is just too good. Right now I wish I had 3 Humans leveled up instead of 2 humans and a bangaa.
My Moogle is a Gunner with Stunt equipped. The juggle abilities I think are the best set of abilities in the game. With Concentrate on, you can Ring to stop enemies with good accuracy, dagger to disable, firebomb, etc. And jugglers have the absolute, hands down, best A-ability in the game: Smile. This ability is just plain awesome when used correctly. I usually Haste my moogle so he can pass out turns whenever he comes up. Notice, the character you Smile gets reset on the Wait List thing, so it's not a complete free turn. I always try to Smile a character that just recently took their turn to get the max number of turns. Guns actually do decent damage, so I'm really happy with my Moogle as just kind of a helper with the ability to take out damaged units.
My N'Mou is a Sage/Alchemist with Control to get Blue Mage abilities. Sage is really good. Raise is great as an all purpose heal spell, Bio is good. So is Meteor or the other Meteor whichever the Sage gets. I like Alchemist for Death and the other Meteor. Alchemist and Sage both have really good stat growth, too.
The Elf girl race person I have is an Assassain with Sharpshoot. Her movement is really good, so she can usually get up to anyone in one turn. I have Concentrate on her so she has a good chance to Last Breath someone on the first turn. I give her a good Bow and the Sharpshoot can pick off weak characters late in the fight.
I think this is basically the party I'm going to finish the game with. I'm still tinkering with the Bangaa, but I've kind of given up on him. I just don't think he can compete with the humans even with the Bangaa-only powerful swords I've gotten. Let me know what you guys think.
Edit: I just saw how ugly this post is...sorry.
You're too far ahead of me so I can't read your post. :(
I'll read it hopefully by next weekend. :D
i wish i had some time to really get into this game this week. i got finals comin' up and i really shouldn't be playing anything actually. i'm about 6 hours in now though.
Paladins in this game are pretty worthless unless you put the skill on a character who already has a completed Fighter move set, with double hand set as the support skill, whichever of the two fighter or one paladin reactive skill you wanna pick (All three are good, though I'd rank bonecrusher lowest in spite of it's power) and the dash boots will give you a huge area to move around in.Quote:

Which would be useful if the battles were more on a Vandal Hearts scale, and you had more than six people to play with. Considering the tiny ammount of choices you have when it comes to who to take to battle, I doubt the guy that specializes in luring folks away is gonna rank very high... Unless you like drawing these things out, in which case... You tihnk funny.
Anyhoo, the fighter/paladin mix with the dash boots gives great defense when that's needed and a little backdraft when the time comes for that, too. Now, if you wanted to lure them away from the bulk of the battle, then shower them with far fists, magic from a mage by your side playing support... You could wipe these guys out pretty quick like.
All the good ranged (and backdraft, too) attacks of a fighter, with the armour, defense techniques, self healing and great or knightswords of a paladin. That's my main character, and he's pretty fuckin' gangsta if I say so m'self.
Thats pretty much what I'm doing with my main tank now.
Got all the fighter abilities available at the 20 hour mark, now I'm getting him some of the better paladin abilities. After that I'll change him back to a fighter most likely.
Air Render (I belive the name) is such a pimp fighter/monke abilitiy, especially considering how early on you can get it.
I'm thinking about taking him to Ninja camp to get couble sword.
I'm also thinking that I'm lazy.
you're in luck. these races are all going to be in final fantasy 12. there was a press release a while back saying that ffta would act as a preview of the game's races and concepts.Quote:

there are some flaws, though. i've been playing disgaea, and ffta's battles drag in comparison. the poorly designed menus are more irritating, though. it's generally difficult to find specific information on abilities and item properties. there are dozens of menus, but they're rarely where you expect to find them. also, buying new weapons is kind of a suicide.
i'm overlooking the problems because the game is otherwise excellent, but it's surprising to see such obvious mistakes from an experienced rpg developer.
yeah I don't get that either, its not like that haven't done clean interfaces before, or good gba titles
kinda odd.
do the weapons you equip to get abilities even raise your stats? to me it just seems like all the weapons are there just for thier abilities and not much else.

I just never got into the original FFT as much as i shouldve, but this one is just fantastic. I'm blowing out my SP batteries in one sitting, I just can't stop playing. Finally, finally an RPG worth playing to me......I feel like a lot of the ones I own I've either beaten or just really arent worth my time. But FFTA is just awesome.
now for the breakdown:
Marche is really cool. He's kinda the usually clueless/semi angsty FF hero, but I like him a lot.
Ritz is my fav so far :D Since I'm only about 10 hours in, I don't really know what's going on with her.....but I'm sure I'll find out.
The rabbit people are really cool looking, for being rabbit people and all. The Bangaa are useful, but I'm still trying to find my niche with them......I use the Warrior guy a lot, because his HP is really high.
He takes damage like a bitch, but he's a good all around character, he can fight, he can heal, its all good.
The class of the big fluffy care bear things I don't like too much, but at least I know what race to stick my white mage abilities with. I haven't gotten too many different classes with the 2 i have because they have really low HP, so I've got to get in there and train em. I usually send them away on dispatch, it gives them something to do.
I actually really like the dispatch stuff. I mean, better to have the people I'm not using doing *something!*
I also love love love the law system. I have no idea why, but I'm totally digging it. I just got to the part about the antilaws, so I cant comment on that too much yet. =X I haven't broken any laws yet either, but I'm sure I'm going to have to eventually.
also, like, is there anything special that happens if you don't break any laws throughout the entire game? Or is that impossible?
The Ninja class rocks so hard! I'm gonna make a whole team of ninjas and assassains for my quick and dirty work....
the ninjas would be better if I had the double hand ability...............
Just got it. 4 hours in and all I can say is I like it. Feels much different than FFT for so many small reasons. Like instant spells (istead of waiting turns), no field rotating/scaling (but not a problem in the slightest), the fact that the story has already taken a back seat as Marche seems to adjust instantly to being thrown into Ivalice...
The job/race thing had me bummed for a second, since you can't mix and match certain races and jobs. Maybe I was the only one looking forward to a moogle dragoon, but...I'm over it now. I like how weapons teach abilities now, because it adds an element of balancing performance and the need to learn new skills. Most importantly, I really dig the graphics and music. Easily some of the best flair on the GBA to date.
You mean the looks of this on a PS2...? I'm in.Quote:

He has the attitude of Ramza, sorta. But I haven't really gotten too much into the story.
Do you guys like the way FFTA has 'missions' as opposed to FFT's random and story-driven battles?
I don't mind the missions as a gameplay element.
What I don't like is that there are so few that prompt the story to move foward.
The story in FFT was fairly busted due to the translation, but it moved at a much faster pace than the story in FFTA.
Woah! These races are going to appear on the PS2?! Where's that press release?
ah i forgot to clarify. i don't know if it was a press release, but it was definately in the japanese magazines. i think it might have been an interview. i'd check rpgfan, but i'm going out now.
edit: i can't find any more specific information than this:http://rpgamer.com/news/Q4-2002/122702a.htmlQuote:
Square recently revealed the first solid details about Final Fantasy XII through the Japanese publication Dorimaga. In an interview with the magazine, Yasumi Matsuno, the game's producer, stated that some of the gameplay elements in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the Game Boy Advance would be also used in Final Fantasy XII for the PlayStation 2. Though he refused to comment on official information regarding this revelation, he encouraged gamers to play both games in order to get the full story.
Some of the game's primary developers were also revealed in the magazine article. Jun Akiyama, known for his work in Final Fantasy VII, will be the production supervisor; Akihiko Yoshida, character designer for Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, will take the role of character designer and 3D map designer; and Hideo Minaba, who worked on Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy IX, will be serving as art director.
i might be imagining the whole races thing, but i'm not sure. sorry if i got anyone's hopes up.
that third totema boss is a bitch. he wiped the floor with my crew. guess i gotta raise levels and such.
question: does the game make the bosses lvls around or higher than whatever lvl you are at the time you fight them? i ran into one clan that was all lvl 5 and lower and my highest character was on lvl 11. seems funny to me.
Satsu, for the bangah, have them be monks and learn air render, its a relatively short ranged missle attack, but it hits very hard, and armor/hp hounds then. You also should equip them while they are still monks with brigantine(armor) It confers the counter ability, and one of the few things nicer than having your bangaa shred one guy in a turn, is letting him take a hit and return a second shredding on the opponents turn.Quote:

Finally, for the big fluffies. i.e. the nu mou, they do well with all casting, i have a sage/white mage, and a black mage who decimate the opposition with offensive casting. I really dont like beastmasters / morphers, but they may have some use, maybe someone else here has had better luck with them.

 I would have never thought of that...but it is kind of true, particularly the antilaw guy.Quote:

Some laws are so difficult to fathom fighting in, like a ban on knive, swords and otherwise, that I simply attemt to avoid them rather than take any chances so early in the game. Angle obscurity is an issue due to the lack of rotating fields but it's only been a minor inconvenience thus far.
On the plus the character portraits are beautiful as is the rest of the game, and though the story doesn't have the same power of the first it's more than enough to keep me interested. The overall feel of the game does come across as an attempt to appeal to a younger audience but again there's enough there to satiate. So far it's worth the $35.
I've got the guide...
But I can't look for where to find the steal weapon or dual weapon abilities until after I beat it. :D
Now that my sniper/archer is finally starting to get some solid levels behind her, the archer "aim" abilities are rocking out.
If I'm behind an enemy, her aim abilities have a success rate of 70% which is insane. Couple that with the disable arm abilitiy (they can no longer use actions) and she is pretty much rocking it up.
And yea, the Nu Mou totally looking like Eeyore. Out of all of them, I think the black mage most looks like him.
Hey, Burg! Long time no see, or some other such pleasentries.
Kino, if you think the sniper kicks ass now, she has a bow called the twinbow(or something twinnish) which is a double arrow barrage, she is hitting hard now. I also wanted to say how much i am liking the elementalist, their status/damage strikes hit hard and have some nasty resultsQuote:

Just hit 26 hours last night, woo.
Nice avatar btw 'veg.
Thanks. It's curtousy of sggg. :D

I'll work on getting everything for everyone that I should....I think it will help me out. Right now my "main" party is:
Marche (Fighter)
Montblanc (Time mage currently, with lotsa Black Mage abilities)
Viana(Fencer, she's totally strong, she usually does about 80+ damage and i think she's only about lv5...)
Mallory (white mage, she's fast and good at what she does)
Clay (this guy's mah boy, he's an awesome ninja!!)
Kilov (his a Bangaa I'm still rounding out some)
And i'm trying to train up a blue mage and somehow trying to fit a no mou in there. I don't really use them too much still, but I don't want my game to suffer from not using one =X
Kidnemo- ahaaaaaaa...........actually, now that I'm playing more and more FFT, Marche seems less and less like the typical FF guy. At first he was just 'oh wow, i dont know what happened but I guess I'm here now.....' and then he progressed into a really cool, in depth little dude. I really like him a lot!
ps- Does anyone have a pic of Ritz I could maybe use for an avatar? I can't find one anywhere =X
Archers and Hunters are both surprisingly good. The only problem with Archers is that they can't use the better bows, and the Hunters have a few abilities that are only useful against monsters. A Hunter with Aim equipped is pretty useful, but I really think that Snipers and Gunners are both better. Gunners do more damage and have much better range, while the Sniper has more damaging attacks (actually I like to give my assassin a bow and Sharpshoot ability). I guess having a human without Two Swords just seems kind of wasteful to me.
Wow.
I died in a mission for the first time.
I had all of my main party members out on dispatch missions, so I was just walking around the map waiting for them all to get back when, *bam* a two-part story battled was triggered by walking over one of the towns.
I beat the first mission, but lost on the second one. Wacky.
Well, it seems like I'm approaching the end of the game, and I'm just now starting to get some cool equipment (Reflex, Double-Sword, etc.). I feel a bit cheated, since I'm not sure how much longer I can play to use all this stuff before it's over.
After looking at the classes and races when first getting the game, I decided to focus almost entirely on Viera bunny-chicks (must be some deep-routed subconscious furry-love combined with cool outfits). They're much more ninja than actual ninja (Conceal plus Last Breath is a thing of utter beauty). Obviously you switch classes constantly in this game, but my general "army":
Assassin w/ Spirit Magic
Sniper w/ Aim
Fencer w/ Spirit Magic
Summoner w/ White Magic
Archer w/ Sharpshoot
Red Mage w/ suckiness (still haven't found too many Red Mage items, and I think I missed the chance to get the secret one with double-magic pre-learned)
Marche is a ninja/fighter/paladin, double-equipping swords and blazing through the ninja skills (since you can learn twice as much).
Montblanc is a gunner/juggler...just recenlty found the item to steal jp so he might be going back to thief though.
My only Nu Mou worth anything is a black/white/time mage named Azimov. Nice.
Only Bangaa worth anything is a Dragoon/monk. Not very good compared to most. I don't like how some of his skills cancel each other out since they need certain weapons...he just doesn't fit well into my team of almost all range/status fighters, with Marche to just stomp around 1-hit killing everything. Besides, Marche likes his harem of bunny-chicks and his moogle sidekick.
Anyone played with the link yet? I still haven't had a chance to, and none of the pubs will restock their "trade" option.
I hate when they pull that BS. What's worse are some of the multi-fights that don't let you re-equip/skill Marche, when he's the only one you can use. -AND, only he gets the AP for the fight then, even though the previous fight used your whole team (and wasn't just one of those transition win-even-if-you-lose fights).Quote:

Theives seem to be alot more usefull combat-wise in FFTA also.
I don't think Red Mages can earn there keep until you get double-cast. Like most viera classes, they're still decent fighters no matter what, but I just haven't found a reason to keep them in that class yet. Supposedly, you can double-cast a summon and say, a life spell, along with decent attack damage, making them a great all-around.Quote:

Yeah, my only Nu Mou was a sage for a bit...but like anything, he's only the class I have the best items for  So, he'll probably go back to sage when I get some new stuff (he looks cooler, and the movement goes way up), but he had to learn Return Magic and all the -agas (i.e. Thundaga), so back to Black Mage he goes. I didn't notice that the sage skills where that much more powerful than BM stuff, but I haven't had too much opportunity.Quote:

On the downside, I haven't seen or used and Illusionists at all, so I have no idea about their uses...and my brief stint in Moogle Gadgeteer proved pointless (only under very stringent conditions could I find this class useful...and then, not very).
I picked up the guide soley for the fact that you can plan out your job progression so much easier.
Being able to compare abilities/stat progression and look at the job trees all in one place (and easier on the eyes than a FAQ) is key.
I haven't tried an illusinionist either, but I want an assasin, and I believe it's on the job tree to getting there (unless I'm thinking summoner, which I want to try also), so we'll see soon enough.
My Montblanc is currently a bm/tm combo, but I've been using his tim abilities more than his bm spells. Could be time to try out the ole Gadgeteer.
*edit*
Just whupped that mission I died on. A quick change to a fighter with Air Render and Bonecrush? (the fighter 1.5x counterattack ability) and the mission was a cakewalk.
I've been playing this for the past two days and must say I'm loving it.
As I've been on about Disgaea for a while now, I feel it necessary to mend the disservice I've done to FFTA by comparing the two on key features, so, without further adeau, I give you "Captain Vegetable's 'FFTA Rocks Hard Ass' Review . . . but it's really more of a comparison . . . and not even a full-blooded comparison, as I'm only comparing the key features."
Catchy title, I know.
I'll begin with the job system. FFTA owns Disgaea in every reguard. The job list is robust, unlike Disgaea's five jobs with 75 different names and a pallet swap (Brawler -> Fighter -> Black Belt -> Divine Fist -> etc. They're all the same damned class!!!). Also, the progression to the expert level classes is excellent, as you need a single character to be well trained in the prerequisite job classes in order for that single character to become an expert, and when it's unlocked, it's unlocked for only that particular character (I.E. if I have a Moogle capable of becoming a Juggler, every other Moogle in my army is not ellegable to become a Juggler unless trained as such). It makes job planning a much more integral, strategic part of the game.
Next is the Law system . . . it's a pain in my ass. I don't like it at all. "Sword Restriction?!" What the eff is that all about?! It's disappointing, too, because it could have been so much better. Maybe my mind will change as the game progresses and I get anti-law cards and the like. To be fair, it hasn't gotten in my way that much, most of the restrictions are on things I don't use anyway, like Silence or Dark.
Gaining experience is a sight less irritating than in Disgaea, as you would only get XP for killing an enemy, and not every action, like in FFTA.
There is much, much more to say, but it can all be summed up in a few words: Disgaea is not fit to hold FFTA's jock-strap. ;)
Clan: CuppaKupo
Level: 9
I named my Clan "CuppaKupo" in hopes I'd have a lot of Moogles join my party so I could build a Moogle exclusive regement, but no such luck. I have two Moogles, and one of them is Montblanc. Needless to say, my name wasn't wisely chosen.
I am, however, learning that I like the Viera, quite possibly more than the Moogles, though, again, this is yet to be realized as I'm not to deep into the game.
P.S. Marche looks a lot like Ramza. So much so, that during the first hour or so of game play, I couldn't for the life of me figure out who they were talking about when they mentioned this "Marche" guy.
Nice read 'veg.
I've yet to play through Disgaea, but after totally dominate FFTA, it's next on my hitlist.
Moogles are neat, but so far they seem more like just a "fun" class, or a good support class (time mage).
The HP > MP ability totally rocks though.
I'm at about 34 hours in now and stuff is going pretty smoothly. I should also have my first assasin soon too.
I must say, I'm really loving this game right now. I was really hesitant to pick it up because from reports I'd heard from other people it seemed like it would be more frustration than enjoyment, but wow, I'm extremely glad I decided to take the chance. So far, I'm about 18 hours and 55 missions in, and though I really liked FFT's story, I'm not so much missing it in exchange for FFTA's pick-up-and-play nature.
The story in FFT was better, but the translation was totally busted.
In FFTA the story is much more accessible, but it is progressing a bit to slowly.
I'd like some new part to be unraveled in the story like every couple of missions, not like every five or six which is what it seems to be.
cv, you neglected to mention that disgaea's story is 252448 times better than ffta's. the art direction/character design is better as well, but that's debatable. i agree with you on the job and experience system, though.
Oh, and Kid, since you have the strategy guide, are there any really important advantages exclusive to the snake race? My main party currently has no snake representation, so I should probably consider one. I haven't read the whole thread, so I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but any help/advice would be appreciated :)
